Sounds like Mellanby was pushing for a promotion and when Molson said no, he went elsewhere.

Interesting that Mellanby would go right to the owner about being GM, undercutting Bergevin.

Montreal's french-first mentality is really stubborn and handicaps their ability to bring the best possible candidate in.
I really don't understand why they hamstring themselves like that. They only need to require that their GM learn french.

I'm in Quebec, working for a large company. We are all bilingual. When a new upper manager is hired, most times it's someone as english as can be. Within a year they are speaking french when they have too. A few years and their french is actually quite good.

Absolutely no reason a high profile position like G.M. of a hockey can't do the same

Evan Rodriguez having quite the season for Pittsburgh..... Dubas acquired him in the Kapanen deal but couldnt get him to sign. He might end up being a more valuable player than Kapanen. What a heist that trade would be making out to be if Dubas wouldve been able to re-sign Rodriguez.

Agreed. Kinda' crazy really. You have one of the most storied franchises in hockey. The team is struggling, so it's time to bring in new management to help return them to glory. Now let's eliminate 85% of the very good candidates out there because the french media need to be kept happy. Ridiculous. Even Ducharme seems like the kind of guy you'd have a conversation with for about one minute and you'd be looking for a way to get away. "But he speaks french". They get what they deserve.

Playoff success is funny sometimes.

Since Keefe was hired:

Leafs: Get absolutely goalied in the playoffs but:
Regular season record: 77-35-13 and look good for the foreseeable future to be a playoff contender

Islanders: Make the playoff final 4 twice but:
Regular season record: 57-47-18 and it looks like the good coaching/great back end combo cant keep the lack of skill afloat forever for them.

Habs:: Make the finals but:
Regular season record: 50-61-18 and it the entire team/management on the verge of implosion.

A lot of other great examples out there too (the Canucks come to mind as well).

Since Keefe took over, the Leafs are the only team with a positive goal differential in the playoffs to not win at least a round. Even some negative goal differential teams managed to win at least one. Maybe funny isn't the right word, but the criticism he's getting seems pretty over the top

Not saying he should be criticized but it is a results-oriented business. And when the expectation to win is there but they don't, someone's going to take some heat.

Tragic is more like it.

I can only imagine the ridicule for suggesting Hyman be on team Canada when he was a Leaf. 20 games in a different jersey changes that entire conversation apparently. I'm not saying players like that shouldn't be on the Olympic team, btw.

There is zero chance "Hyman on team Canada" gets any traction if he's still here. Beyond the obvious fact that it's a pretty ridiculous notion, no media member would dare give that idea credence for fear of coming off as biased towards the Leafs, which is the greatest sin a sportscaster can commit in this country.

Yep yep yep.

When you're winning a series 3-1 and then that team ties the series up and then takes the lead in the 7th game and he doesn't make any changes to the lines to shake things up or get our top 2 players going deserves criticism. I don't care how good his regular season record is when he's losing playoff series we should be winning and possibly even sweeping imo. I'll agree that some people can go over the top though.

This Washington - Carolina game had some playoff intensity.

Andersen lets in a deflating late PP goal (albeit after the 5-on-3 expired) after Carolina rallied to tie it up in the 3rd going into it down 2-0.

Us losing to the Habs did end up anchoring them to a shit coach, giving up 1st rounders for Dvorak, losing Kotka and adding a couple more shit contracts......but damn I really wanted it to get Bergy a nice long extension too.

Dammit. So close.

Looking at the Habs roster looking for a good trade deadline add and....nope nope nope...not even one contract there I want.

Petry as an upgrade over Holl would be huge. But tough to do unless they retain.

Nobody else is appealing though.

Toffoli wouldn’t be bad but you’d be paying for his crazy year last year and probably wouldn’t be worthwhile

Surprised they actually did it. A shame but that team has put themselves in a tough spot long term. Their drafting needs to improve.

Gorton had a lot of hype but didn’t he fizzles out in New York?

Wonder if he’s the chief decision maker and their new GM will be more of a French figure head to maintain that stays quo

If you are smart you look for Lehkonen, Chiarot and Edmundson. They will be valuable come playoff time.
