I really don't understand why they hamstring themselves like that. They only need to require that their GM learn french.Sounds like Mellanby was pushing for a promotion and when Molson said no, he went elsewhere.
Interesting that Mellanby would go right to the owner about being GM, undercutting Bergevin.
Montreal's french-first mentality is really stubborn and handicaps their ability to bring the best possible candidate in.
I'm in Quebec, working for a large company. We are all bilingual. When a new upper manager is hired, most times it's someone as english as can be. Within a year they are speaking french when they have too. A few years and their french is actually quite good.
Absolutely no reason a high profile position like G.M. of a hockey can't do the same
