Part of the problem is as soon as a GM for any team makes a mistake and overpays for a player, the agents of other players want to negotiate off that number as if it is the new market price. GMs are going to have to learn to reject that kind of thinking.

Well, I mean, isn't it the new market price? If someone's willing to pay for it...there's your market.

Wouldn't 4 years take Marner straight to UFA? 5 years means both Marner and Matthews are UFA at the same time.

Is there any team that could realistically offer sheet Marner? Would any GM willingly give up four 1st round picks?

Flyers, Avs, Sens, Blue Jackets, and Jets are the only teams that have 10+ mil left in cap space. Avs have Rantanen to deal with, Flyers have Provorov/Konecny, and Jets have Laine/Connor. Ottawa doesn't have the budget.

There was a rumor earlier in the offseason that Columbus was the mystery team who had contacted the Marner camp about an offer sheet. It would make some sense with them losing Panarin (and Duchene) to free agency.

I think it was Elliotte Friedman's podcast that talked of rumors that they couldn't agree on contract length. Marner wanted a shorter term but Columbus understandably wasn't too keen on giving up four 1st rounders without a long term commitment.

I dunno, I mean, I was told it was easy as long as you didn't overpay veterans for past performance, you just have to pay guys before you win since that's when they're worth it and...oh.

The Leafs would be fine, in terms of the cap, if they didn't get Tavares. It's not easy having 3 guys each take up 14% of the cap.

GMs aren't the ones in position to reject it. That kind of thing needs to be written into the CBA or something.

Columbus actually makes sense as a destination for Marner - BJs have the cap space (even after signing Werensky for about $4M-$5M.per season and BJ's can come up with 1 or 2 good prospects for TO.

I blanked on Werenski still being unsigned (4-5 seems a little low for him), so that probably would take Columbus out of the running.

Edit: Some news about Werenski looking at a bridge deal for a little more than 5 mil AAV

BJs would probably have to trade a roster player to fit Marner........but yeah not too many teams can take him on for sure.

Best of luck to Bill, he was one of my favorite players growing up. Back when I was getting my first blank Devils jersey customized, I was debating between Brodeur and Guerin. If Guerin had a better number than #12 on the Devils, I might have went that direction. Years later, I still had that random itch for a Guerin jersey and ended up having a 2002 era Team USA jersey customized.

In 2015, I was going to the NHL Awards Show in Vegas and the Draft in Florida as part of a two week vacation. Right before I left, I looked up the presenters (moreso to see which C level celebs the NHL had lined up) and saw that Guerin was scheduled to be there. So I tossed the Team USA jersey in my luggage just in case. As things turned out, I accidentally ended up backstage but didn't spot Guerin. And then I only saw him from a distance at the Draft.

The next leg of my vacation was a quick visit to Pittsburgh where my buddy was going to take me to a Pirates game. To my surprise the entire Penguins staff is slumming it with me on a Southwest flight and Guerin is sitting there in the first row. I figured it was bad form to corner somebody on a plane for an autograph, but eventually I worked up the nerve. Guerin could not have been more accommodating. My silver Sharpie wasn't working so he had a staffer fish one out. I even caught him admiring the jersey for a few moments; We chatted a little more at baggage claim and he said that his Salt Lake Olympic jersey had been stolen. [/coolstorybro]

Provorov wants 10M per year?

I don't watch the Flyers too much, but that seems like a lot for him.

you should have offered him yours haha

Negotiation point for sure.

If he's getting 8 years, I can see it being 7-8 million.

He (his agent) wants an LTC in the 7 to 7.5 range, which is too much .

Flyers (and this goes back to when Hexy was still here) wanted a bridge deal with more realistic number

From what I heard, they were willing to go 2 /3 yrs in the 5M range.
Also, waiting for McAvoy and Werenski to sign

I like Provy (I think Werenski is the better player) but he needs to show at least 2 to 3 more years of consistent play first , he's only 22 and a bridge deal is the fair way to go.

Bridge deal makes a lot more sense for both parties, I agree.

I'm just thinking aloud when I say if he's asking for 10m/8yrs, it's negotiation code for 7-8m/8yrs.

I'm high on Provy though, I think he'll be well worth that by the end of it. But the uncertainty makes sense.

Just so we are clear--you wouldn't give McDavid 10m?
Just so we are clear not a single team with a player with a cap hit over $10M has won a Stanley Cup. My educated guess is that unless the rate of increase for the cap accelerates, many of these contracts where players making that kind of cap hit will either expire, or be deep into the contract before a team has enough money under the cap to add sufficient depth to their superstars.

Just a hunch on my part, but this isn't the NBA where you can pay three players an exorbitant percentage of the salary cap and win.

Is McDavid worth $10M? Based on his talent and the salaries of other less talented players in the NHL, he certainly is worth it. Will Edmonton win jack with him eating up that much of the cap? Probably not. I like Colorado's chances going forward if McKinnon continues his growth and they don't go nuts with the cap hits on their RFAs.
