It's taking longer than most would like and there have been some mind-boggling moves (Walman, Holl) but I think the future is looking bright. None of the vets he signed to make this team more competitive have long term contract and most expire after the next 2 seasons freeing up a lot space for moves. The core (Seider, Raymond and Larkin are signed to team friendly deals with Seider and Raymond providing some of the best bang for the buck contracts in the league).
The biggest weakness for the team is top 6 Center. Larkin is only an average 1C and Compher and Copp are borderline top 6 players (if that). We have 4 prospects at Center who may become an uprade to a Compher lever player. Kasper, Daniel son, Lombardi and Plante. Kasper is showing signs that he may be there already although probably not ready to be a top 6 C yet. It is possible that none become as good a center as Comper but I think it's more likely that at least one of them will be.

Yzerplan is going just fine. Poised to have top 3 d core in the league and possibly the best goalie tandem. Lots of pieces and picks can be moved to fill the 1c or 2c position when needed. Wings look poised to be great for the future as well with Raymond, (debrincat), buchelnikov, mbn, Mazur

There's also free agency.

The impatient ones did not realize how long it takes to build through the draft when you get shafted every year and can't draft Bedard or celibrini

Yes, Daniel son.

Tough to complain much since the Todd Father has been brought in. Lots of things working well and fun to watch. We haven't made the playoff yet and this team is legitimately a set back away from being out of the race.

I'm going to enjoy the wins hopefully till a playoff spot is clinched then I'll circle back to this thread and crown the rebuild over.

we already had our major setback. Didn't you see? Petry is out 6-8 weeks. They'll just have to figure their way through it

I think Plante plays wing. Finnie is a center.

Why would this rebuild be over if we make the playoffs?

The chink in the Yzerplan armor right now is the pro scouting. The only signings I think they can hang their hat on are the goalies, and scouting goalies is certainly different than skaters.

Kane has worked out too but he wasn’t even playing when we signed him, so our scouts couldn’t have been going off of current NHL performance.

A few guys who were decent in their roles, Ghost, Walman, and Fabbri, we moved on from and replaced with worse UFAs like Gus, Holl, and Tarasenko.

It’s overall a pretty big indictment of whichever pro scouts have Yzerman’s ear. I’m probably going to be holding my breath until I hear that they’ve brought in a few pairs of fresh eyes to curtail the current pro scouts’ deficiencies.

I think we can and should look at upgrading our pro scouting.

But I don't think it is nearly the issue people make it out to be.

We are missing some context here. I doubt very much the pro scouts told Yzerman "We absolutely have to get Chiarot/Copp/Compher" this off-season. It is a lot more likely they correctly identified better players to acquire, and those better players weren't interested in coming here. It then becomes do we want Copp or nothing. Do we want Compher or nothing. Do we want Chiarot or nothing.

And the way those guys have helped insulate our young players and make a playoff push last year and are now in a playoff push again this year... I don't think those decisions were that bad.

I'd say we are missing a whole lot context here. No one here knows which players they are watching and what do they write in their reports. At the end of the day, it's Yzerman's call which players he acquires. And naturally that player or other GM, has their own mind. It's hard to review pro scouting staff since we don't have anything on them, all we have is desicions made by Yzerman.

Whom ever it was who recommended Forsling to Zito, gave a prime example of good pro scouting. Wings pro scout could have done the same but if the boss wasn't interested, well that's about it then.

I think even criticism of our pro scouting gets taken too far. Do people not remember how atrocious our center depth behind Larkin was at our worst? It’s really hard to add capable, defensively responsible centers who can pitch in some offense. Compher and Copp were very much missed by their teams when they left. We’ve seen just how badly it can get in this league when you don’t insulate your young talent with NHL caliber vets.

Holl is my biggest gripe of everyone thought he was terrible when signed and he did absolutely nothing to prove anyone wrong.

My biggest gripe is the Holl/Petry additions and how they went down. If you are so skeptical about the defenseman you just signed in free agency that you feel you have to add Petry, you never should have signed that guy to begin with.

That’s fair. I get that it’s hard to turn down Petry when you’re getting him 75% retained for practically nothing.

The copp/compher deals were almost just as bad. They were clearly 3rd line players from the get go who benefited from being on top nhl teams at the time of free agency

Tarasenko has been a flop, yzerman has not had much luck in free agency. I'd rather play wallinder tuomisto etc.. then make free agent signings at this point unless someone like Kyle connor decides he wants to come home
