Around the League 2018-2019 Part 2- Everyone is having fun except us

The problem with twitter or anything else social media related, is everyone needs to have a "hot take" without processing because the nature of the medium is its fleeting. if it didnt happen withing 24 hours on my timeline its long gone and a distant memory. Thus I must comment on the first thing on the top of my feed. My buddies and I jokingly say that people are experiencing "twitterbrain" because most can't carry coherent thought on any issue beyond a couple minutes then something else gobbles up their attention span or they must look at their phones.

Well, there are those really racist WW2 ones. No need to show those any more......
I don't know in the proper context, they should be shown. If you are studying WWII and discussing the propaganda that was put out by all of the participants involved, it is a very important element to understand. How can you know the true evil of Goebbels and the Nazi regime if you don't watch some of that stuff?

Oh sure, in a context like that. But springing them on kids after school just like they are any other cartoon would be what I was talking about.

The rest of the NHL is ensuring they retain their former Kings' bottom six forwards. Nic Dowd, Nate Thompson, now Jordan Weal.

Where art thou, Nick Shore?

He had a whopping 3 goals in 37 games in the KHL, but I'm sure he had great puck possession numbers. NBCSN should have a LeBron like "Decision" broadcast when he decides which of the 31 NHL teams he will sign with.

It’s one thing to study history and another to glamorize it. Were people racist, yes. Some are still around today. Is it ever ok? Feck no.

I have no sympathy for racist asshats having their statues torn down. Boo hoo.

Meanwhile there’s a giant statue of Vladimir Lenin in Seattle and no one seems to give a shit.

“Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right.”

It’s good to know history. I have a BA in history. We live in a country that grants us freedom. A statue isn’t a history lesson. It’s an honor and symbol. I’m very white and have lived a privileged existence. I try to put myself in the shoes of others. I do believe it is damn time to try and correct some of history’s wrongs. Are people flawed, yes. Racism should not be tolerated. Statues honoring racist should not be defended. Seems to me that it is mostly white people doing so.

Again, no issue in a history lesson context. That should be taught. Not in a this was ok kind of way, but this sheet actually happened way.

But where do you draw the line? White racist statues arent ok but statues of white communists whose ideology has killed millions are ok? If it offends a large enough group of people should Magic's statue come down because he has HIV? Or Delahoyas for dressing in drag? It's completely arbitrary and it's getting ridiculous.

So the Jefferson Memorial needs to come down then? People's beliefs a largely the result of the era/circumstances in which they were raised.

No communist statues aren’t ok. Nor are they as prevalent in America. I don’t think HIV or drag are on the same level here or that they will ever offend on the same level. What is offensive is America’s history of slavery. We have made strides but I would not say POC are treated equally to whites. We still have race relation issues today. We have learned to be PC about it or speak in code as a society. America is a good country with good people. But there are still issues. Most people don’t even see their own biases. It’s hard to change the world but we can all do better in our own sphere of influence probably.

People still opposed racism back then. Jefferson was wrong. At least add an asterisk and inform people that the man was fallible and just a man. Less hero worship.

Nice to see another BA in History around these parts. :) Agreed on everything here.

I have an idea, lets talk about the rest of the league in the thread about the rest of the league. :badidea:

Did no one see this last night?

I try and not speak politics anymore on this site. I will just say I disagree with you about how popular Lenin is among many young people these days. I see it first hand at the speaking things I work with, and we get lots of protestors who are very pro people that no one in the world should be pro for, people who's ideas caused the butcherings of millions.

@SettlementRichie10 is 100% right, we should be way more outraged about a Lenin statue as we should about any of this other stuff. I too am a history major and it is appalling to me how stuff that happened less than 100 years ago is so quickly forgotten by people today. Santayana's quote on the subject has certainly aged well.
