The Islanders tried to break the Kate Smith mojo for the Flyers by presenting her with flowers before a playoff game once.

I went and found one of the offensive songs and can definitely see why people would take offense. I think we are going a bit hyperbolic now on erasing the past though.

There are many people who most would be considered to be great American leaders who were against things in the past that many would now consider to be cultural norms. Should we erase history and their role in it, because they couldn't look into the future 10, 25, 100 years and see how society would change? Ridiculous.

I am not for re-writing history, or ignoring the contributions people made to it, because they had a slightly, or even radically, different moral compass than we have today. We study history to understand the mistakes of the past and the virtue and flaws of the people who lived at the time. We should never try to erase it, or maybe people prefer our times to be forgotten as well, because surely future generations will find some flaw in us.

Kate Smith performed a great rendition of a patriotic song every American should be able to get behind. Leave it at that.

I can see no longer playing the video of her singing, but I do not like removing of statues.

Lots of people in history have done shitty things. We need to understand what made them good and bad and learn from them.

Pick the worst contract... ::hint choose either one and you're a winner!::

Easily the one that requires expansion protection and has a full NMC.

It's always been that way. Rob Blake won a Norris over the greatest d-man most of us have ever seen (unless your old enough to remember Orr) as a minus player, because he had 23 goals.
This might be a slight exaggeration but I don't think I ever saw Lidstrom make a mistake (missed coverage, bad pass, etc) in the defensive zone.

It's likely that's the case. It diverts pretty rapidly into politics.

That's sad. As someone born & raised in a Communist country, I can smell censorship from 10 miles off. It appears to me that HFBoards have hundreds of moderators around here, yet they don't trust themselves to facilitate a civilized discourse on an apparently important, and clearly hockey-related, issue? :thumbd: It may have undeniable hockey-related implications (I hear of Flyers fans canceling their season tickets because of this). If a hockey-related issue like this can't be discussed on HFBoards, where else should it be discussed? A baseball or knitting board? Really sad.

posts on the main boards have a habit of vanishing when a moderator disagrees with them

pretty sad honestly

If footage came out of one of their key players from their two Cups doing something considered racist or whatnot, would they take down their Cup banner?

I mean, where does it end? For me, the Kate Smith GBA thing is just as much a part of the Flyers as the Broad Street Bullies, Bobby Clarke, Ron Hextall and the Legion of Doom. Like, just stop playing her rendition of the song and move on.

This kind of stuff is why I think it is precious that there are those on here that think nobody will care if the Kings were to bring Voynov back. This Kate Smith thing is most likely something that STH'ers are mad about but the team still went through with it. You can say the LA hockey media isn't a big deal so his signing would just slip under the radar but it totally would not: Twitter would know about it. That's all it takes these days is someone to start the fire, the retweets fan it and then people that don't even give a shit about the Kings would make it miserable on the team from a PR perspective. SJWs strike from everywhere so it doesn't matter what the local sports media is like: that type of thinking is ancient.

at the same time though, the outrage is always very fleeting because they just pile on the latest and greatest outrage

Well, the trouble is that there's currently nothing to agree or disagree with because, apparently, no discussion whatsoever on this issue is taking place. I find that amazing.

It's not just the main boards – I was looking through the Flyers board, too, and there seems to be nothing there on this.

In contrast, on Twitter, in response to that Flyers PR tweet quoted above, many fans vow not to prolong their season tickets, etc.

I mean, where else should one discuss what is or isn't the right course of action to take in circumstances like these, if not on the Flyers board and on the main boards here?

(Us Kings fans might shrug this off as unimportant, except that it indicates a wider problem with discourse in today's politically correct society; see the Voynov/Twitter illustration.)

KNEEL. BEFORE MOD!

Once they get their pound of flesh, they move on to the next outrage.

My point is the Kings have nothing to gain at this point because they suck and there will be fallout if they signed him. Worth the PR hit in 2015 but Bluc aren't going to take that on with a rebuilding team. I don't think Voynov would want to come back here anyways and would prefer a fresh start somewhere else.

He's not even Kings property anymore. He'll likely sign with the Panthers imo.

What really rubs me the wrong way is this shock people have that folks from the 30s were racist. The inability to view different time periods through reasonable lenses is baffling.

We are failing as a society to teach history to young people in the proper context today. Too much emphasis on today's feelings, and not enough on facts and the feelings of the time period being studied. At least that's my feewings.

they only care about their own little world

there's atrocities going on every day in southeast asia, africa and the middle east but a song sung by a dead woman is a low hanging fruit
