Per Bobby Mac: Because of Sturm’s age, he burns his first and only entry-level contract year by signing. When season is over Sturm is RFA and eligible to sign a non-entry level NHL contract.

CBA outlines contract length for ELCs, so that part's not negotiable. So this is why some guys might opt to stay in school an extra year rather than play in the minors since it doesn't necessarily accelerate their free agent clock.

18-21 year olds: 3 year ELC
22-23 year olds: 2 year ELC
24 year olds: 1 year ELC
25+: doesn't need to sign ELC

Edit: And here's the text from the CBA on how to "determine" age. So this explains why Sturm fell into the 24 year old bucket when he doesn't turn 24 until next month.

9.2 Age of Players. As used in this Article, "age," including "First SPC Signing Age," means a Player's age on September 15 of the calendar year in which he signs an SPC, regardless of his actual age on the date he signs such SPC

Canes will try to trade Harvard’s Fox, Dundon says

Hurricanes owner already has come out to say they plan on trading Fox. Rangers have three 2nd rounders, their own plus Dallas'/Tampa's. The latter two could get upgraded to 1st rounders depending how far those teams get in the playoffs. Maybe the Dallas 2nd rounder plus a non premium prospect will be enough?

Realistically, they were not catching the Blues. The Avs grabbing the late equalizer is killer though.
