The fact Hellebuyck was a Vezina finalist over Gibson is laughably bad. You know how Smith for Calgary is good for one bad goal a game (usually the result of him misplaying the puck)? Well, Hellebuyck is good for one bad goal a game due to his rebound control, or complete lack thereof.

His strategy for stopping shots is this: square up, get as big as possible, and hope the puck hits him. He's completely static in the net. As is the case with many other teams, goaltending is Winnipeg's Achilles' heel.
And there's a lot of people on the main boards who think he's a better goaltender than Gibson......

Of course there are, there aren't very many main board posters who'd watch several games (or even the condensed highlights thereof) and get even an approximation of an accurate view about different teams, let alone individual players. All they see is, durrr moar wins, moar stability, dis must mean goalie is better dan other goalie.

The general public is always wrong because the collective understanding lags behind reality some.

Teravainen re-signs in Carolina for 5 years. 145 points in 211 games since Chicago traded him. Still can't quite believe Carolina got him for a 2nd and a 3rd round pick (granted Bickell was put into the deal as a cap dump).

Exact type of deal Anaheim need to be avoiding if they try to dump one of their bad contracts.

Chiarelli tops losing Eberle for nothing by signing a 30 year old goalie with 31 NHL games to his name to a $4.5M extension after he’s been about league average this season.

It could be far worse than having Carlyle as your head coach after all.

Keep in mind, that is a possible situation you can face with an other GM.

Btw. Spooner is an interesting player out there.

While that is true, one should never look at the bottom of the barrel for comparison.

If Chiarelli gets fired i hope he gets hired by Seattle & then i hope to god they offer a coaching job to Carlyle & Carlyle chooses Seattle over being a scout in the Ducks front office.
This way Chiarelli botches the expansion draft for Seattle.

As bad as Chia is that team is still going nowhere with the current ownership getting involved in everything and with Lowe and MacTavish still skulking around with any sort of input into the hockey ops.

Katz isn’t close to Melnyks level of bad but I don’t know how many else are worse than him.

What do you even do with that team at this point?

When you can’t build around the best offensive talent to enter the league since Lemieux when you’ve had 3 other number one picks you may as well call it quits and sell the franchise. McDavid isn’t going to wait around another 3-4 years for another rebuild. Or at least he shouldn’t.

I wonder how much input McDavid is going to have in the hiring process. I think that could make a difference in him staying. It's players like Draisaitl and RNH that I'm less sure about.

Anaheim has the perfect coach to bring in a gritty, winning culture to Edmonton. In fact Anaheim will let him go right now :sarcasm:

I always said Edmonton is doomed as long as Lowe is still involved. "But he got promoted to the executive office, he has no input on the hockey ops!"

This should be a cautionary tale about the old boys club mentality. Something we're getting dangerously close to with this talk about moving Carlyle up.

Doesn't seem to be any reason to fear something like that here. For one, we already have a very good GM, something they've lacked in Edmonton since the 90s. For another, nothing suggests Carlyle is in line for an executive job, just something in the organization. Our higher up structure has been set for years. The last time randy was out of a job, bob placed him as a pro scout, beneath the director.

Nobody complains about an old boy's club when guys like Marchant and Nieds are kept on.

If only there was any way in this universe to see how prime Getzlaf and Ovechkin would play together.
I'd selfishly would have loved to see that combo. Fortunately, prime Backstrom and Ovechkin was probably just as good. While I think Getzlaf's peak was higher than Backstrom's, there's no denying Backstrom is every bit the player Getzlaf is. Frankly, I think Backstrom has been underrated his entire career.
