-Moving Bieksa/Bernier would be the GM admitting he made a mistake picking them up this year and is going to lose assets for it. I don't think that option works for their GM.

The Ducks didn't give up a ton (possibly nothing) for Bernier. It was almost like an NBA style trade with a bunch of unlikely conditions slapped on: http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/breaking-conditional-pick-leafs-bernier-trade/

— If Bernier starts half of Anaheim’s playoff games next spring and the Ducks win the Stanley Cup, Toronto receives the Ducks’ 2017 second-round pick. (If Anaheim doesn’t still own that selection, it will transfer its next available second-rounder from a future year.)

— If Bernier starts half of Anaheim's playoff games next spring and the Ducks lose in the Stanley Cup Final, Toronto receives the Ducks' 2017 third-round pick. (If Anaheim doesn't still own that selection, it will transfer its next available third-rounder from a future year.)

— Should Anaheim trade Bernier to a team that starts him in half of its playoff games next spring and wins the Stanley Cup, Toronto receives the Ducks' second-round pick.

— Should Anaheim trade Bernier to a team that starts him in half of its playoff games next spring and loses in the Stanley Cup Final, Toronto receives the Ducks' third-round pick.

If none of those things happen, the Leafs will receive no tangible return for Bernier beyond the useful cap space the move created.

It'll be tough to deal Bernier since most teams aren't really shopping for a backup right now. But I don't think it's a huge PR hit to move Bernier. The GM could spin it as 'we needed the cap to sign Lindholm' and 'Gibson has shown he can shoulder the load' etc etc.

Ouch, thought he was off that contract. What were the ducks thinking.

Toronto paid Bernier a 2 million dollar bonus on July 1, so they took on his cap hit (4.15 mil) but only 2.15 mil in salary. So in theory, they thought they were getting a proven veteran at a reasonable salary. But they probably should have anticipated needing the cap space for Lindholm.

No doubt. I mentioned that with the Lindholm thing dragging out that the Ducks might look to trade him. That didn't go over well either. It makes sense though.
-Fowler isn't enough cap on his own to get Lindholm signed.
-Fowler moved with a cap dump isn't getting a return the fans would be happy with.

Moving Lindholm brings back a piece the fans can be excited about and doesn't look as bad from a PR perspective. Also would probably need to move a cap dump with Lindholm to be able to afford what's ever coming back. Really they're looking for a team that has about 9M of cap space and wants to spend it all. There're only a handful of teams that fit that bill.

I'm sure Arizona will jump all over those two . Hell, they already have 2 or 3 dead contracts, and at least they'll get warm bodies in the trade this time.

It isn't that picking up Bernier was a bad move. The problem is that 4M + Stoner's 3 and change is plenty to sign Lindholm.

Moving Bernier now at $4M as a cap dump will probably cost the Ducks assets. That's what looks bad. They either retain salary on Bernier or give up something to move him. That after picking him up this summer would be horrible if you're the GM. That's why I don't think it's an option for the Ducks.

Should have just kicked down a 3rd or 2nd straight up and got TO to retain a little salary.

VANCOUVER SUN: Canucks defenseman Nikita Tryamkin is refusing to be demoted to the club’s AHL farm team in Utica.

http://spectorshockey.net/nhl-morning-coffee-headlines-october-25-2016/

There is a link to the Vancouver Sun article and I read it and don't understand why he'd refuse to go to the AHL. Playing every day, learning, is better than sitting in the press box.
Tryamkin is a 6'7, 265 lb defenseman they drafted a couple years ago and should develop into a 2nd tier d.

The article says since his arrival in March, he's strugged to achieve NHL type conditioning required and practice only won't help that. Apparently doesn't understand English very well, and they have no Russian to translate. It's a shame somebody can't convince him that playing in the AHL is his best option if he want's to play in the NHL.

Damn, Bishop lost his front teeth on a slapshot to the mask! Isn't one of the purposes of the mask to prevent stuff like that from happening?:amazed:

The Toews contract is looking bad.

He just doesn't have that edge he use to play with. Hasn't played a good game yet this season.

Toews is still relatively young though, only 28.

Dustin Brown played the season of his life at that age.

Isn't he being dragged down by anchors and asked to shut down the other teams best players every night. That can wear on you.

Couple days late, but Shane Harper from Valencia scored his first NHL goal for Florida over the weekend. Definitely awesome to see somebody from my hometown crack an NHL roster.

Goalie masks are interesting in that your face is still really close to the fiber glass/kevlar at the front. All that's separating actual contact with the shell is variable amounts of foam that holds the mask snugly to your head. I'm a goalie myself, and I've taken a few dead-on shots that made my mouth/face sore a day or two after playing. Never lost any teeth yet though :D

That's just what you think, because no one has ever seen Kopitar play without anchors. Even when he goes to the Olympics or team Europe. :)

I feel bad for Kopi now.

Kopitar with Gaborik in the 2014 playoffs was breaking the Malkin Conn Smythe pace, total fire, until he ran into Toews and they blackholed each other.

I don't think the Toews deal is looking that bad. He has never been about scoring. Toews defensive game is underated IMO.

He put up 58 points last year; that season Kopitar put up 64 we were executing him around here and that was BEFORE he got his deal.

I love Toews--even think he gets a raw deal sometimes--but it's gonna be reaaaaally hard to justify 10.5 million as 'he's really good at defense' when he's not clearly superior to some of his contemporararies and one has been clearly better than everyone (Bergeron) this era while only scoring marginally less (well, actually he put up 10 more than Toews last year) for 6.8 a year.

Yeah, nobody is paying Toews $10.5m on the cap to be good at defense. That's only part of the package. Kruger is a good defensive center, and is at just over $3m. If a guy, other than goalies, takes up that much cap space, you're expecting offense. Not that the Hawks are hurting for offense so far, but part of that is Panik being half way to his career high in goals already.

Find the GM that wouldn't sign Toews to whatever he wanted though at the time the contract needed to be signed. There's just not going to be anyone out there smart enough to say, you know, I'm not going to sign Toews, or Kane, or Kopitar. Maybe if the GM couldn't be fired for a decade, and had the freedom to conduct that type of experiment.

The top 12 cap hits in the league were given to the players by the team that drafted them. Only 2 of the top 20 cap hits have been given to UFA's, and that was Parise and Suter going home to Minnesota, but the Devils and Predators wanted to keep them.
