The thing that helps them is how sweet Scheiffle's deal is

It does help. They actually had him to 23 on his ELC. Then signed him to an 8 year deal. Since signing that 2nd deal he's been a point per game player, in both the regular season and the playoffs. I don't know how much of it is luck, timing, or full knowledge of what you're doing, but to have him at a hit of just over $6m until he's 31, for the entire likely prime of his career, if he's putting up numbers like that, does help.

I saw 7 billionth of a milligram in a milliliter, which equates to 7 nanograms per liter (ng/L). A man Schmidt’s size would have 5-6 liters of blood, so you’re looking at ~40 nanograms of whatever it was. Still not much, but maybe the substance is highly active.

Some of those biologics can be huge. The key will be if what they found is an end product of the metabolism of a banned substance, it's like a smoking gun. Given how few times the league actually suspends players for PED use, they must have some pretty strong evidence verified by those with expertise. The last one I remember was Tinordi. Here was his response:

"I am extremely disappointed that I failed a test under the NHL/NHLPA Performance Enhancing Substances Program. I did not knowingly take a banned substance. I understand, however, that I am responsible for what enters my body as a professional athlete and I accept the suspension. I will work hard towards my return to the ice and will learn from this frustrating setback."

Similar to Schmidt's, except he actually takes responsibility. The contamination and trace amount argument that Schmidt makes holds little water. For one, only trace amounts are usually present unless you get tested very soon after taking a substance and the body hasn't started eliminating it. Two, it's not complex biological precursors and byproducts are just floating around the environment. These are specific molecules from specific pathways.

If I were Schmidt and I truly did not take anything other than an OTC supplement I would hire lawyers and sue immediately. That's another lie athletes that test positive float is that OTC supplements are dirty since they aren't checked by the FDA. If you're taking JYM pre workout you bought from Rite Aide it's not gonna boost up your T levels where you test positive. Again, if that was the case then the maker of JYM would be liable. Schmidt stands to lose quite a bit of money, if he was truly innocent you will see a lawsuit. If he's guilty he will serve his suspension and blame the testing procedure which we have seen that song and dance over and over again in most other sports.

I would not be shocked if a bunch of Vegas guys were taking PEDs, first year in Vegas, team needs to be a hit...could be a huge scandal. As @The Tikkanen said, if a bunch of guys fall off hard that had career years I wouldn't be shocked.

If a bunch of guys fall off hard after the Schmidt incident the optics are going to be terrible.

There were some Junior players that failed drug tests awhile back from taking store bought supplements.

Prescription drugs have been found in regular supplements. This is nothing new.

Those cheap liquor store supplements are particularly bad (or good depending how you look at it). A lot of the manufacturers are Chinese so there's really nothing that can be done about it.

This might be an unpopular opinion, but I'm actually okay with some PED usage.

HGH and testosterone managed by doctor can help players recover from injury faster and prolong careers. Of course excessive usage is dangerous (but that's true of many things). Other practices like blood doping are taking it too far IMO.

People always make this out to be a black and white issue but there's actually a lot of grey area.

hey! - pass me some of that gray area over this-a-way....

Yeah, I've never been all that crazy about the PED issue either. The recovery or just using the stuff period.

There might not be an easier city to acquire PED's than Las Vegas. Entire workforces are reliant on their physical appearance to keep their gig. And I'm gonna break some news and let people know Carrot Top is not all natural.

I'm shocked. How about Penn Jillette?

If anyone subscribes to the Athletic, there is a comprehensive article about NHL dope testing and the Schmidt case. Worth your time. I'll also plug that the subscription fee for the Athletic is definitely worth it if you're a sports fan.

Questions about drug testing in the NHL surface following...

Small snippit from the article:

According to one renowned researcher in the anti-doping field who asked to remain anonymous because they were not authorized to speak publicly on the case, the amount of what was found in the positive test is irrelevant. If a testing facility can confirm the presence of a prohibited substance, it has to be reported.

“The levels are insignificant. It means nothing,” the researcher said.

Low levels do not necessarily mean a trace amount of a substance was consumed, after all. Trace amounts could also be reflective of a substance that is late in the “washing out” cycle that follows consumption.

“A low level can indicate two things: use of a small amount recently or a larger amount a long time ago,” said the anti-doping official. “As testing has become more sophisticated, it’s developing the ability to detect over a longer period of time.”

When it was first rumored they might try for 2020 I was shocked. That can and likely will be a contract dispute year. Not the best time to bring in a new team So they have finally realized that are projected to do the right thing.

Bring back the old divisions!

Which old ones? The Pacific today is basically the Smythe after 1990. Or the newer old one with Dallas? Or do you mean when the Kings were in the Norris division with Montreal? Or in the Western division with Philly and Pittsburgh?

Or do you just mean the name Smythe?
