Which old ones? The Pacific today is basically the Smythe after 1990. Or the newer old one with Dallas? Or do you mean when the Kings were in the Norris division with Montreal? Or in the Western division with Philly and Pittsburgh?

Or do you just mean the name Smythe?

You know which ones. Don't play dumb. It doesn't suit you.

All I know is the current names are dumb. How can you name a team Pacific when half the teams don't play in the pacific time zone? Other divisions are equally bad and what the hell is with Metropolitan division. Central is the only name that really makes sense.

I was legit asking though. If it's the name, I have a soft nostalgic spot in my heart for Smythe too. That's what it was when I was a kid, and it sounds like hockey.

I just also enjoy the overall alignment topic. Why teams have been where they've been, what compromises had to be made, etc. Like what would a 4 team division look like for the Kings? With Seattle in the league, and assuming the Coyotes remain in Arizona. The easy answer is SJ, Ana, and Vegas, but then Arizona ends up in a weird looking division that doesn't make a ton of sense for other teams. I could talk about that all day.

Same thing with Dallas. How were they in the Pacific? What was Minnesota, or even Colorado, northwest of?

Can't call the Pacific the West division, since it's already in the Western conference. If it's not going to be Smythe, Pacific makes as much sense as anything else.

I dont know, Arizona, Dallas, Colorado make the start of a good division but that 4th team is the hard part. I guess a team in K.C. or Salt Lake City would help.

It's kind of fun playing Tetris with all the moving parts. Like, it's easy to make 3 of 4 divisions work extremely well geographically, but one almost always gets shafted. Then, you have historic rivalries to at least peripherally consider, never mind travel, time zones, uneven number of teams, etc. I can't even find an alignment that doesn't mess over at least one-two teams, unless you do something goofy like having certain teams play each other 6 times and others 4, etc.

Introducing the first Captain of your SLC Thunderbirds, Trevor Lewis.

Dreger on TSN 1050 yesterday on a Karlsson trade
NHL Rumors: Dreger and Friedman on Erik Karlsson - MyNHLTradeRumors.com NHL Rumors: Dreger and Friedman on Erik Karlsson

I know one of the teams involved made a pretty substantial offer, I would say several weeks or so ago, and I’m told that there were six elements to it. So you’re talking about at least a couple of roster players, at least a couple of prospects, and at least a couple of draft picks. Now, some of that is conditional on whether Erik Karlsson would sign with that team.”

Dallas, San Jose and Vegas were pushing pretty hard, but I wouldn't put it past Papa Lou trying to replace JT.

Not sure what Melnyk and Dorion are doing, not sure they are either. And I don't see Stone or Duchene staying there, so there's 2 more trades.

Not surprising, despite the unwarranted hate from some on this sub-forum, this is a franchise changing player so the demand is going to be massive. There is not another player with a similar skillset in the entire NHL and hasn't been one in quite awhile. I'm not saying he's better than Doughty or Hedman, but he presents such a unique and game-changing skillset that teams are going to offer massive amounts to get him on their team.

I don't think anyone disagrees with that.

Similar with the Doughty trade speculation before he signed, though, it's a far different haul if there's an extension in place vs. the risk of UFA.

I'm glad we're seeing more and more of the teams allowing their players' agents to try to find agreeable terms with other teams before making a trade because everyone wins in that scenario.

Just throwing some spaghetti against a wall:

Dallas: "Couple of roster players" Devin Shore, Brett Ritchie + "couple of prospects" Julius Honka, Jason Robertson - Stars get Janmark/Nichushkin back this year, so maybe helps make some forwards expendable. Honka would be a nice get as a near NHL ready RHD for Ottawa. Dallas seemingly making Miro Heiskanen unavailable for a Karlsson trade.

San Jose: "Couple of roster players" Melker Karlsson, Justin Braun + "couple of prospects" Josh Norris, Jeremy Roy - Don't really see a match here, Sharks also don't have their 2019 1st or a particularly great pipeline

Vegas: "Couple of roster players" Cody Eakin, Jon Merrill + "couple of prospects" Nick Suzuki, Nicolas Hague - Maybe not ideal for Vegas to start cashing in prospects, but they could stomach this for an extended Karlsson. Vegas seemingly keeping Cody Glass off the table.

I just see him in Dallas. The Swedish connection will come through.

Would still guess Tampa, but Dallas does have alot going for them. With the Bolts, I think it puts them in a position where they will likely be the SC favorites for the next 3 years. It probably means they give up alot of depth, cap flexibility and the chance at a longer window, but looking at their roster I think going for it is the best way to go.

Considering the circumstances around Karlsson and Ottawa, I don't think they're going to win the trade at all. At best it will be fair, at worse, they get bent in a trade.

If neither. He walks. The best Ottawa fans can hope for is a reasonable trade IMO. Anything more than that is unrealistic

Frolov looking pretty sweet in these Killer whale jerseys. Hoping he'll have a good season; looks like he's already scoring goals.

Is it wrong that I hope Matthews, Tavares, and company lead the leafs to nothing but another 50 years of futility? God damn, their fans are insufferable.

Maybe but how rad would TO be in the post Cup celebration? That's why I root for them these days. You're talking about children and not the long suffering fanbase.
