so LA gets a slow LW
Vegas gets a fast LW
ok, all is fine

 what??

Kovalchuk is slow, Patches is fast?

and one is 3 years, no assets given up...the other is 4x7, lots of assets given up.

Patches improves VGK just like he'd improve LAK, but not at that price, no thanks. I doubt Kovy is the electrifying skater he was in the past, but I'd hesitate to call him "slow" vs. Patches.

Classic grass is greener stuff all summer.

"Pacioretty routinely gets into a scoring position just by being faster than everyone else on the ice"

Top 25 Under 25: #2 Max Pacioretty

you'll probably get a chance to see that more this season now that he's in Vegas

he was pretty much the 2nd fastest forward in Montreal behind Paul Byron

and yes Kovy has lost a few steps since his Atlanta/New Jersey days, again, you'll probably get a taste of that this season

good stuff

Says Kovy has lost a few steps since his last NHL stint

Links a Habs blog from 6 years ago to 'prove' Patches speed while ignoring literally everything else

Good stuff

Mike Richards was a stud when that article was posted.

LA gets a top 6 LW without giving up assets.
Vegas gets a top 6 LW giving up 3 assets, one of which they traded 3 assets to acquire 6 months ago.

to be fair, i'm sure there's more than few in Vegas that pretty much see the Tatar trade with regret. His benching in the playoffs spoke volumes, and at $5.3m/yr they pretty much, from Vegas' perspective, saw it as a cap dump more than anything else

depends how you want to see the deal of course

but i would not want a $5.3m Tatar on my team if i were Vegas, the fact that they had to hold $500k against their own cap pretty much confirms that even Montreal thinks Tatar is overpriced.

so dumping Tatar cost a 2nd?
UFA Patch brought in Suzuki

that's my story and i'm sticking to it

anyway i tend to watch a lot of Habs... but you guys seem to question his speed so i just posted an article that stated that

here's thn: TheHockeyNews

ASSETS:
Has great scoring acumen, which is highlighted by good speed, excellent hands and laser-like precision. Displays the required frame to thrive in the NHL. Is a responsible winger with two-way acumen.
[TBODY] [/TBODY]
but why do i even need to prove this? he was the second fastest skater in montreal behind Byron

you guys sound salty for some reason

That tax benefit Vegas players enjoy is BS. Same with Tampa and Dallas and whoever else. I saw that Pacioretty's $7 million a year cap hit is equivalent to almost $10 million in Montreal. Didn't he want something like $8 million+ from whoever traded for him?

What's with the whole "Ilya Kovalchuk is slow" thing?

Have you guys watched highlights of him the past few years in the KHL?

He's literally blowing by other players. (Side Note: Max P is NOT fast.)

this has to be addressed in next CBA. Would think the players and teams would want some sort of equalization system.

Why do people still get surprised when low tax region teams get players for lower aav?

It's incredibly unfair to both players and teams but what could they actually do?

I think it would be pretty easy to put a caveat into every contract that players salaries adjust based on team location. Every deal would have to be signed based on a specific tax region (probably New York where head offices are) and then adjust off of it. Definitely more complicated things in the CBA.

Doesn't surprise me but in a hard cap world it definitely goes against what the cap is intended to do, which is make a fair playing field for all teams regardless of location.

Why would players want the taxes to be equalized? They can play teams in higher/lower tax areas against each other.

Kovalchuk/Pacioretty - Vegas can take a few more chances than the Kings can. The Kings have 4 D with higher cap hits than the first D on the Knights. They're not paying for having won yet either. The Knights main guys are mostly younger as well.

Max is fast lol
but i guess there's no middle point right? he's either McDavid fast or he's not?

Would give players certainty that if they are dealt to a higher tax area they will be fairly compensated. Also if they want to sign with a higher tax region team they would earn more than previous.

this is sarcasm right? I was in favor of bringing in Patches over Kovalchuk but even I can see the benefits of only being locked in 3 years, keeping assets and the fact neither is lightening fast.

is there a mention of asset management in my post?

NMC and NTC. A lot of guys get those these days. Probably partially for the tax reason.

The players don't want the cap, and want owners fighting over them. I don't know if the tax issue would be a deal breaker if brought up for the CBA, but I doubt the PA would offer equalization free of charge. I would imagine that UFA's especially enjoy not having it.
