158 goals in 146 games?

Shesh, I wasn't aware he could rack up those numbers. Ovechkin better be cautious.

My bad, that's what I get for trying to work a calculator, and control a freshly stubbed toe , hanging nail off of it and bleeding.

I did correct that, it's 380 games. Prior to last year, he averaged 35 goals per year.

And given the amount of pressure in Montreal to win, Cup starvation, by the media and fans, I'll give him that off year. Trade rumors didn't help either I'm sure.
Wouldn't want to be the guy wearing the C in that town...

Vegas doesn't (and won't per McPhee) have a captain this year, they have a leadership group and are more comfortable with that.

Just being out of that pressure cooker of a town will help him alot.

That's not the trade the Knights made. They didn't know Tatar would be a bust. They did the right thing and moved him and his contract. Patches is better than Tatar and a better fit for Vegas now and in the future. And it was Vilardi and TT that were the players (per sportsnet) that were headed the other way along with a high draft pick. All that stopped it was the fact Patches didn't want to sign in LA. So Blake and co thought he was worth it too.

The 1st is a late round pick, and until any of those players hit the NHL and contribute, it's a win for Vegas. That kind of a decision is one that a GM makes given the position he's in. Vegas has a bunch of picks, losing Suzuki, won't hurt as much as it would another team. One of the reasons that Vegas was able to make that deal was the fact they felt they could afford to off him, a lot of teams didn't have that depth.

Does it make the Habs better next year, with an aging Price and Weber? or even the year after that?
I don't think it does.

So it depends on where the team is and what realistic expectations the GM has.

That's kind of my point; maybe Vegas is comfortable with that spending of assets. Kings absolutely should not be at this point. Why are VGK getting a pass for Tatar? "Good job you made a crappy trade then covered it up by blowing a ton more?" Tatar looked bad even at the time, it looked worse when he got stapled to the bench--and while I agree Patches is a beyond massive upgrade there, it was a pricey one.

Blake would have been tarred and feathered if sportsnet were right.

I'm guessing a lot of players who had career years last year will drop off big time and that McPhee brought in Patches to help maybe counteract that drop in production. I still Vegas is a good team, but not a 109 point team. I think they did pretty well asset wise getting what they could for Tatar because that was a bust of a trade.

It's silly to complain about tax benefits some places get. Other places have different benefits, like history, climate, culture, etc.

I mean, LA has climate. So Cal just has proximity to theme parks for family. Should the Cap be reevaluated because LA and Anaheim has better weather than most of the other locations?

To act like climate and culture is an equivalent draw to millions of additional dollars is disengenious. While for most of the year these athletes are stuck at home, they still travel a ton with their team, as well as have the assets to live anywhere they want to in the summer.

Lucic is a perfect example of this.

I just saw that he actually accepted a 4 YEAR...4 YEAR contract? Are you kidding me? The trade is now phenomenal for Vegas. I'm pissed.

His salary in the first year of the deal is set to make him the 9th highest paid player for 19-20. 2nd highest paid LW that year, and 4th highest LW cap hit. Maybe it's an ego thing. One of the highest paid LW's in the game. Maybe he doesn't want to tie himself anywhere for 6 years. Maybe he feels he can get another decent contract at 34. Maybe it's bad timing, coming off his worst full NHL season. Maybe it's a tax thing. Maybe since he hasn't won yet, closing in on the age of 30, he's willing to take a little less to help a team. But yeah, 4 years is low.

I liked him, but at some point, you need to face the music.

His 6th team since 2016/17

If someone is still willing to pay you a lot of money to play hockey, why stop? Not talking about some huge star that might be "damaging his legacy" by hanging on as long as he can. What's the first thing any retired guy says? They miss the room. They miss the day to day of being part of a 25-ish man tribe that is struggling to win against another team. Going on the road, hanging out. There aren't many places you can get that experience. As long as you have the fire, and someone is giving you a chance, keep going. He's got nothing to lose.

More GM's should be offering shorter contracts. That's a killer contract for Vegas.

If Patches sucks it up badly, Vegas is not stuck with an anchor around their neck for the next seven years.

Vegas eventually soon, will have a lot of young players they have to sign.

The GM's aren't signing guys like Pacioretty and thinking he's gonna suck. Everything right now is in place for Patches to have a bounce back season. Warm weather, up temp offense, no press coverage, can walk around where he lives and NOBODY knows or cares who he is. I think that's gonna be a trade that works out for both teams, Suzuki seems like a guy who should excel in the current state of the NHL.

I agree on everything you said.

Pacioretty embraced the role, but being captain of the Habs has to be draining, especially when the team is losing.

You sound negative for some reason. What Montreal gave up to get their guy:

1st round pick
2nd round pick
2nd round pick
3rd round pick
Nick Suzuki

What the Kings gave up to get their guy:

nothing

Seems alright to me.

Tatar could have been any other player
if you think that Montreal did this deal because TATAR was included, then Montreal's management is really piss poor

but no, Vegas didn't give up all those assets to get "their guy"

No one is putting words in your mouth. you literally said Kovalchuk is slow vs Pacioretty is fast.

That's a bad take even before you ignored everything else.

Yes, Vegas is surely a better team today. No one is disputing that. you're just getting banged on for making a driveby comment that doesn't even make sense but suggests La made a bad move and Vegas made a good move so of course it's going to be analyzed.

I can't imagine this world where people spent four years *****ing about us giving up tons of assets for aging players then criticized us for...not giving up tons of assets for aging players.

I love you and I know you're mostly pushing buttons but I'm triggered as **** because I have to moderate this stupid ****

LA didn't make a bad move at all
we didn't address speed however, in a speedy Pacific division
that's all
im done with this

They lost Tatar, Neal, and Perron and got a 30 year old 17 goal scorer.

I don't think they'll be much better.

Calling pacioretty a 17 goal scorer is funny. He scored 17 in 64 games ( Over 20 goal on full season) with no center in an injury plagued year. The previous 4 seasons he averaged 35 goals a year and he will be playing with better forwards in Vegas.

intangibles vs tangibles.

But they did, they traded a 1st, a 2nd, and a 3rd for Tatar, then they turned around dealt Suzuki, Tatar and a 2nd for Patches, doesn't matter WHY montreal did it, but Vegas essentially turned a 1st, 2 2nds, a 3rd, and Suzuki, into Patches....

When I started watching hockey in the 70's , they were the big bad Bruins, tough and hard to play against. Pretty much kept that ID for all these years, in a lot of ways. But the last few years, they are changing with the times.
And I think they will miss his toughness.

Also, Bruins signed forwards Lee Stempniak and Daniel Winnik to PTO's.

Well, GMs should know a 34-36 year old forward is probably not going to play all that well. Should have been a 5-year deal max.

here's the thing. I think Vegas should be ridiculed for their over payment of tatar, but at least they cut their losses and left the purchase price as a sunk cost instead of throwing bad money and bad money

The Ottawa Senators found the most awkward way to announce they're blowing up their roster

Sens Owner Melnyk via twitter last night announcing the team is rebuilding and the fans can be a part of it. It was a link to a 5 min. interview he gave with Sens defensman Mark Borowiecki, rather than the media.

He said the team is in a dumpster and needs an overhaul

"That's what our rebuild is going to be. This coming year, we're going to have 10 out of the 22 players [that] are going to be new – meaning they are either rookies or maybe they played under 10 games last year," explained Melnyk. "And then the following year, it's going to go up to 15 of the 22 – maybe 16. So that's a total turnover -- which is what exactly should be in a rebuild."

There is a summary at the end of the piece of the things he's done or associated with him...he's the dumpster...

No wonder he's public enemy number 1 up there...

watched that last night...sooo awkward. He talks about rumors of moving the team when he was the one who threatened it. He talks about how many drfat picks they have in the next few years, when they lack a first this year and their extra picks are a 3rd, a 6th and a 7th.

Guy must think fans are idiots. Feel for Sens fans.
