The Kings definitely still need one more piece before they’re considered contenders next year. A 35 year old Kovalchuk alone isn’t enough.

Which may already be on the team for all we know. You get nothing for being considered a contender in July. The Kings were considered a contender after getting Richards and Gagne, and then fired the coach for a guy on a farm and made 5 other moves before they actually won. There's a whole season for things to unfold and emerge. Or, to not do that, and expose all the various holes.

What's adding one more piece? They have $3m to spend. They're gong to hope the old guys still have something, let some young guys hopefully produce, and then see what they are come the deadline. There's no piece still out there for $3m. Trades cost something in return. This is probably it.

I never liked the Marleau signing for Toronto. Now it's looking bad. You've got Nylander, Mathews and Marner to resign. Them plus Tavares is going to cost over 40M. It's a tight squeeze and Marleau's 6.25M is going to make it harder.

Like I stated earlier, it's a catastrophe. There is absolutely no way it should have come to this, he should have been traded last off-season if he was not willing to sign. Like we were all saying with Doughty, gauge his interest and trade him if he wasn't going to sign. The Islanders handled this about as poorly as possible
