Even at less than 100% Karlsson is still going to play 30 minutes and just makes that team go. Can't even begin to think how bad that team would be without him.

Doesn't matter, Leetch and Coffey used to get caught in defensive zone too. He is playing half the game and is a threat to create offense every shift he is out there, even against other teams top lines.

What he does in transitioning the puck out and what he does in the offensive zone are unmatched in the league.

Only Lidstrom, Bourque and Pronger are clearly above him the last 30 years, IMO.

Had the Kings drafted him in 2008 I think this team could have been a dynasty with Doughty, Karlsson, Kopitar and Quick. That is the best, most well rounded Top 4 I can remember. How do you beat a team that has Doughty and Karlsson playing almost the entire game?

With the salary cap.

I was mostly joking, he was everywhere tonight. I was kind of referencing when Doughty scored the highlight goal on the Rangers and all anyone could do was go "lol Pouiout."

I've said a few times I could see him developing into Lidstrom and he took some strides towards that this year but people are still massively overrating him because he still can't even get on the right side of the goal ledger even relative to his team despite obscene offense. Color me still skeptical because this is a guy who has to score to correct many of his own mistakes (though again that died down a lot this year). He's high-event GF/GA. Coffey used to get caught yes, but everyone knew he was flawed, no one was trying to sell him as Larry Robinson in the defensive end the way people try to selljob EK.

Yeah I mean even with Voynov in that slot we were completely nuts. Imagine having twin weapons in Doughty and EK, haha. Just unfair. Pronger-Neidermayer sort of deal. Would have the option of deploying them like the Sharks do--Vlasic-Braun as shutdown, free up Burns to go bananas--or just roll them how you like because the other team is ****ed regardless.

It would have been a tight squeeze but having those two on defense really allows you to cut corners in building your defense.

Guys like Muzzin and AMart wouldn't be nearly as much of a priority. You wouldn't need to pay your 3&4 guys a combined $8m if you have the two best defenseman in the world on your roster.

But yes, the what-if's can certainly go both ways. I bet San Jose and Vancouver wonder how many cups they could have won had they taken Kopitar over Setoguchi and Bourdon (RIP).

But the Kings came crazy close to having an all-time great draft in 08, after having one in 05.

Ottawa still hates Brian Lee, too, heh.

Edit: oh yeah, that would have been Doughty, Karlsson, Voynov first three picks. Instarebuild. Good lord. Makes you wonder if one (Voynov) would have been traded for offensive help even beyond JJ.

Kings probably would not have gone with three right handed offensive defenders. I mean they could have but I doubt it.

But yeah it sucks the Kings had their heads in their ***** with Tuebert and then Slava's idiotic actions. Shame we only got 3 years out of Slava.

Would have been interesting if they picked Josi instead, or a forward, and then picked OEL instead of Schenn in the next year. I hate reflecting on the draft

One thing I am really looking forward to with the new management is hopefully big improvements at the draft. Lombardi and Co. just had a very very difficult time identifying high end talent.

I know it's MMQB or hindsight but the Kings had a realistic chance to draft Giroux, Voracek, Couture, Karlsson, OEL and Tarasenko and passed on all of them. Not saying we should have gotten all of them, but I don't think asking for one of them is to much.

The players we ended up with instead were Lewis, Hickey, Tuebert, Schenn and Forbort.

Hopefully Blake is better at drafting.

That Hickey pick really baffled me, along with Teubert. I remember Alzner being the safe but "boring" pick at the time. Its all hindsight now though. One thing is for sure, mother **** Voynov forever.

What is up with the lame ass gray hoodies everyone is wearing?

We could never afforded both, especially with both deals coming up at the same time. I wonder if the EK we see today wouldve been the same one in the Kings system. Terry Murray's system may have killed the offense instinct right out of him.

Teubert was the worst pick the Kings made in Dean's entire tenure. What a disastrous pick.

At least he played a couple games in the league, unlike Chicago's pick that year. Every team except Tampa and the Kings, and maybe the Blues, is completely kicking themselves for not drafting Karlsson earlier. The what if game for the draft is like thinking about what could be if you win the lottery. Fun, but can't drive yourself crazy thinking about it too much.
