Blake Out of Hell III: Back in to Hell
Kopitar's raise was basically the cap hit that the Kings got for either Williams or Lucic. He got 2 year money in Washington, and the Kings couldn't give that to him with the way the team was at the time. Yes, buy Richards out in 2014, don't sign Gaborik in 2014, then there's all kinds of money for Williams and Kopitar. But that's not how it was in 2015. Lombardi made his bed. They didn't let Williams go. They had to watch him go, because they didn't have the cap room in the 2nd year, which was this year.
Not to mention Williams was on the 14-15 team, and was one of the guys that didn't produce down the stretch which includes when they couldn't win a game against the Oilers to save their season. 2014 was great, but keep him after 2015 for what, loyalty? What is this, a country club retirement home?
18 goals in '15. He's not why they missed the playoffs which was still a fluke.
It wouldn't be loyalty to bring him back. He's a guy that can still play.
Did they not actually have the cap room or were they still counting on Voynov's $4MM to be there in '15 and '16?
Lewis was good for LA this year, but his contract expired going into this season. There is $2MM there. Move Dwight King and his $1.6 after last season and we are good. Room for all three in 2016 and then you have the two of them gone for, presumably, younger players which is what everyone seems to want anyways. Oh, and they make a first round selection in 2015 as opposed to sitting out the first round for two straight seasons! The downgrade from Lucic to Williams would not of been enough to make the Kings lose a potential #1OA to Carolina.
McNabb at $1.7MM. Jesus Christ why don't any of us ever bring that up? I don't care that he is a defenseman with, I guess, more upside than Clifford but we rag on a guy that has bled for this team for years and contributed (see goal in Game 1 SCF 2014, assist on GWG for the Cup in '14) due to his $1.6MM while we never make a peep about McNabb's hit.
