From Elliotte Friedman's 30 thoughts column today

http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/30-thoughts-canucks-coach-criteria-good-news-green/

he starts by talking about the trophies, so after listing some candidates , for the MVP this note (he's right, that is obscene. I Think McDavid is gonna explode in the playoffs)

It came down to: Connor McDavid. Sometimes I’m guilty of overthinking these things, but Edmonton scored 247 times and McDavid had 100 points. He participated in 40.5 per cent of their goals. That’s obscene.

McDavid had 71 even-strength points. The last players to beat that total were Evgeni Malkin (75) and Steven Stamkos (72) in 2011-12.
McDavid didn’t have the benefit of another line easing his responsibility. He didn’t let it affect him, simply bearing down and doing what he needed to do. Cam Talbot was exceptional and the defence is better, but you can’t win without scoring. McDavid drove that bus like Sandra Bullock in Speed, against the best opponents every night. He’s the guy.

Reading the list for his Calder nominees, he had 15. What a year for top class freshman, insane amount of young talent, his top 3 were Laine, Matthews and Werenski. I'm glad Werenski was there, because he should be. Total stud and all poise in his first year in the toughest position to learn Jones and Werenski, sick top pairing.

The Sharks have realized that if they just skate at the net, the Oilers don't have the defense to stop them.

Did I mention I effin hate the Sharks. LOL the shot at Gretz he didn't look too happy!

I don't know why so many people picked Edmonton. I guess they expected Thornton and Couture to miss most of the series? Edmonton is too young. McDavid was a complete non-factor and their defense is trash. Hoping the Oilers take this series of course but I just didn't see it happening.

Oilers top defensive pairing held their own, but the second and third were a dumpster fire tonight

Hot takes -

- Go Oilers. I have a few Oilers fans and I don't dislike them. The #BaetLA rhetoric is too much. **** the Sharks and the entire Bay Area.

- Oilers better hope Lucic continues to show up because for a supposed playoff performer, he was absolutely DREADFUL for the Kings last season.

- It's satisfying to see Dubnyk lose. I like Bruce Boudreau a lot, but the whole State of Hockey nonsense is annoying. It's too much.

- How the **** did the Blue Jackets amass 108 points???

- Go Bruins. I hope Melnyk throws a tantrum in his press box and then goes sobbing to Garrioch after Marchand spears some Senator in the nuts. You know it's gonna happen. Marchand can't control himself.

- In a Rangers/Canadiens series, we all lose. Two awful teams with awful fanbases. Pulling slightly for the Rags because the arrogance in Montreal is unprecedented.

Included in their 16 game win streak, their PP was clicking at like the 3rd best rate since I think it was 1989 or something for the first half of the season. It finished this year in 12th, so it went sort of cold.

also, they are are a very good team, a very young one, but a good one. And they have a world class goalie. They earned those points.

I'm totally opposite I know some truly insufferable Oilers fans. They're up with Vancouver as one of my least favorite. I also know a few awesome Rangers and Habs fans. I hope Boston, Montreal or the Rangers win this year.

Most Oilers fans from the gameday thread blame their loss on the officiating and their "California bias."

They're comical, but then again, I've seen this stupid excuse used from many Canadian fans.

No doubt. Not sure anyone had them having the best season in franchise history when looking at their roster before the season and Torts as their coach though. That's why they play the games. 16th best points%, 14th in GF, and 13th in GA, out of the 120 teams that have played since the start of the 13-14 season.

Giving up assets for one year of Lucic is still a much better move than bringing Williams back for two years, a guy that was noted as a real leader in the room as well.

Unless he simply was going to go back East regardless, it's such a stupid move.

Let your most clutch guy go and then see a team be anything but clutch ever since.

Kopitar's raise was basically the cap hit that the Kings got for either Williams or Lucic. He got 2 year money in Washington, and the Kings couldn't give that to him with the way the team was at the time. Yes, buy Richards out in 2014, don't sign Gaborik in 2014, then there's all kinds of money for Williams and Kopitar. But that's not how it was in 2015. Lombardi made his bed. They didn't let Williams go. They had to watch him go, because they didn't have the cap room in the 2nd year, which was this year.

Not to mention Williams was on the 14-15 team, and was one of the guys that didn't produce down the stretch which includes when they couldn't win a game against the Oilers to save their season. 2014 was great, but keep him after 2015 for what, loyalty? What is this, a country club retirement home?

All Canadian fanbases are borderline insane. All self proclaimed "diehard" fanbases are insane. A bunch of man children who like to think that "you just don't get it man hockey is our LIFE."
