It's not Doughty's defensive game that is the problem, he is elite. It's his lack of offense, in particular his inability to consistently get point shots through.

In the Olympics Doughty was the second highest scoring defenseman in the entire tournament and was the sixth highest scoring player overall.

In his sophomore NHL season he scored 59 points. (Still arguably the best regular season of his career, although many will disagree).

Doughty's game has really bothered me for awhile. You never feel like you're getting everything out of him here. Then he plays in the Olympics and looks like the best player in the world. We need him to be that player for LA.

If Doughty can't be more of a force offensively, like he was as a 20 year old then he can't be compared to someone like Karlsson, just not possible.

I agree with John, the Kings need Doughty to be a better 200 foot player, maybe it was the coaching, who knows but the Kings need a guy who contributes on both sides of the ice and is better on the PP.

I like Drew, Karlsson is the only defenseman in the league I'd take over him, but he has a bit of a teflon thing going on here at this board. He needs to be better, period.

It was his 4th highest scoring season last season. In fact, his two lowest scoring full seasons were in 2011-12 and 2013-14 respectively, both years they won the Cup. He had less than 40pts in both those seasons. How many points should he have every season? He's only been in the 50s twice. 2009-10 and 2015-16. He was 6pts shy this last season of hitting 50. Yet Doughty's real problem last season wasn't offense, it was his defense. He just wasn't as good last season as he usually is.

This is Doughty's team if he leaves the window is over period. There is a reason why he had the highest cap hit before Kopitars extension and I'm sure he will once again when his contract is up in 2 years. Doughty is the best player this team has.

Quite the contrary, the guy gets executed on a game-in, game-out basis because we want more (production) from him, yet some of him measurements over the last couple of years are quite literally peerless. I think what Johnjm said is accurate, there is just something more offensively when he plays elsewhere that we haven't really gotten here consistently, and hopefully we'll see that this season.

Coast-to-Coast against the Devils in 2012.

Between the legs to himself then beats Henrik in 2014.

Unbelievable goals. The talent is obviously there. I feel like he defers a little bit until the stage is bigger and the stakes are higher. When I say "defer", I mean he defers to the safe play and feels the system/process will lead to a W in the end. When everyone in the hockey world is watching, it's all eyes on me. Same game he scores that amazing goal in the '14 SCF, he gets cute at his own blue line and gives up a breakaway for the first goal of the game. If that is a regular season game against Dallas in February, I don't think he makes either play.

Still, that doesn't change his shortcomings in regards to getting his shot through.

Starting with getting shots through. I just don't see how a talented guy like he is can't get it on net without it getting blocked or going wide more than 1 in 10 tries. Keith,EK,Burns and even Justin Schulz do a better job.

Doughty disappointed me so much this season with his play on the powerplay. You would think a player as talented him would be able to play QB and man the PP, but somehow he was one of the weakest links with the man advantage with his sloppy and predictable plays.

He needs to pull his head out of his ass and play like he used to when he was out there trying to prove he's as good as advertised.

Terry Murray got the most offense out of Doughty/Kopitar, who would have thought.

you don't think that had something to do with sutter though? for a few years he's absolutely HAD to be the best defensive player on the team which i would think makes him reel in his offensive instincts a bit

i definitely agree with that not excusing his inability to get shots through though.. that said, i don't think he's the only one even if he's the most likely to hammer a slapshot into the back glass

Arizona is so ****ing irrelevant it's hilarious. The biggest news in years is that they've fired a coach. Such a meh franchise.

Even more puzzling is how they were able to accomplish that with less talent than they have now. Have they really regressed that much in less than a decade?
The power play was really good that year.

Also, do you remember how well Kopitar played early on in that season? He had 30 points in his first 20 games and was leading the league in scoring. He was the best player in the game during that stretch bar none.

The first line was Smyth - Kopitar - Williams

Outside analyst were giving Smyth a bunch of credit, but in reality Kopitar was carrying him.

That streak really set up Anze to have the big point totals he ended up with. To this day that's the best he ever played.

And that was back when Kopitar wouldn't go on vacation by the mid-way point of the season. Now it is like clockwork, we know exactly when he will slow down and he's done so consistently.

The power play was really good that year.

Doughty - 28 ES, 31 PP

11-12

There's a reason Doughty can average almost 30 minutes a game. He paces himself. I think he has been devoting most of his energy to his own zone. Perhaps it changes under Stevens. If it does, I think we can expect him to be out of position more often when it comes to defense.

and annually, it' defies logic. Firing Tippett won't change that. Good for him to free himself of that mess. Good hockey guy, he'll land on his feet somewhere

Promote within? Based on reaction received from the coaching fraternity, the all of a sudden vacant job in Arizona is viewed as toxic.

The Coyotes situation is a concern. On and off the ice. When was the last time that franchise was relevant ?
