Pierre LeBrun pens a piece on the 5 day break every team gets beg in 2017. On one hand , if you are banged up that break would help, on the other hand, if you are riding a hot streak, playing well , that 5 days might not be so good.
And the compressed schedule it creates will be a challenge.

The Kings break is Feb 9 to 16. They have a rough stretch in March, from the 9th to 31st, 12 games in 22 days and 17 in 30 to end the year.

Some teams are eyeing up key players and thinking on resting them on some nights.

So Quick back after 5 day break? Timing could work out.

I'm going to be interested to see what happens to the Jackets when their streak is eventually snapped, would love to see them make a run in that division but I have a feeling they will crash hard once they lose again

A lot of cheap contracts filling out the roster, and the guys they are paying, other than Toews so far this year, are healthy and productive. Panarin and Kane, producing at their career average. Anisimov, looking at a career year in goals and points. Hossa, having a bounce back year and he'll be 38 next month. Keith and Seabrook, looking at 50 points each, give or take. Hjalmarsson and Crawford, doing what they do.

Quick is out. Doughty, Muzzin, and Martinez have all been meh at times, if not consistently, especially the big two. Carter is the only guy doing anything up front. The Hawks have Hossa, the Kings have Gaborik.

You can look at the Kings and Hawks like the Avs and Wings 15 years ago. The Wings were able to sustain their success longer than the Avs, and while the Avs didn't fall off the cliff right away, time was not as nice to them. Oddly enough, Budaj ended up playing a lot of games for the Avs as they comfortably settled into their decline.

Not likely.

They are a very good team, a lot more than a 14 game 'hot streak'. They will continue to grow as a team, and as long as they suffer no key injuries, esp Bob, they will challenge the Pens for the Metro title. They are a very balanced team, scoring thruout the lineup who have speed and skill 4 lines deep (sam gagner on 4th line -14 goals , 28 [pts)
and most forwards play a solid 2 way game. Hard to play against, as teams are finding out.
I've watched every game since Bob went to Columbus, this is a very good team who John Davidson has molded thru clever drafting, solid farm system and good front office into a rising team.

Columbus, after last night, now has the 2nd highest PP% since the 87-88 season. They are .4% away from being tied for 1st. And it's all 1 unit; Atkinson, Wennberg, Foligno, Gagner, and Werenski. There's no Lemieux, or Jagr, or Gretzky, or MacInnis, or Coffey, or Yzerman, or Sakic.

They still have 50 games to play, so you figure that number has to come down, but I find it to be an amazing stat.

Budaj gives up a soft goal per game.

But I would also guess Halak does the same...

That's not why the team is losing, that would be the skaters in front of him, not named Carter, who are not producing. That's why they are struggling. It's not him...he's been keeping them in games, making tough saves so it stays a 1-0 game. They're in the bottom 3 in the NHL in scoring, too many players stealing a paycheck.
And that's on Sutter and his stubborn streak. And it's not going to change for another season, until he's gone.

I've been very critical of Budaj as anyone, but he's been fantastic beyond expectation this road trip, you're not going to win many games scoring less than 2 goals, that's on the team in front of him.

agreed. I have been critical as well, even hoping for LA to go back to Zatkoff. But these last few games have been very stellar.

Even Quick learned this in 2011-12.
What is was something like 9-10 games he lost giving up 1 goal or less.

Of course Budaj isn't suffering that he's giving up more goals but the team isn't scoring in front of him.

I'd still pick up Halak if that cap hit wasn't so terrible if only to replace Zatkoff, but the cap hit is terrible so not worth it. haha

I wonder if we pick him up? Probably not.

They won't pick him up off waivers but they're probably talking trade. Doubt it goes anywhere though. Budaj is playing well enough. No reason to give up anything of value to get the Islanders to retain salary.

If he didn't have another year then he would be an easy claim...although if he didn't have another year I am guessing the Islanders would have been able to trade him.

What do people think of Muzzin for JVR and Kapanen? Would immediate scoring and offensive depth and would help our prospect pool.

With McNabb back I would be ok with it and it would prevent losing one of McNabb or Forbort in expansion. I know loosing a top 4 would open another hole but this year's UFA crop has more D-men then forwards.

Just a thought.
