If he didn't have another year then he would be an easy claim...although if he didn't have another year I am guessing the Islanders would have been able to trade him.

What do people think of Muzzin for JVR and Kapanen? Would immediate scoring and offensive depth and would help our prospect pool.

With McNabb back I would be ok with it and it would prevent losing one of McNabb or Forbort in expansion. I know loosing a top 4 would open another hole but this year's UFA crop has more D-men then forwards.

Just a thought.

You'd need to add to that, LEafs aren't doing that. I've always liked JVR, in his prime now and good for 30 goals a year. Kapanen is having a solid year with the Marlies , 14 goals and 27 pts (ppg) They are loaded at forward on the Marlies,
Nice pickup of Brendan Leipsic in the Franson trade with the Preds, the LW is the leading scorer and having a great year, tied for 11th in the AHL in scoring.

From what the Toronto media guys have been saying, JVR (along with Bozak and Komorov, but given the Leafs have been playing so well lately, close to a wildcard, don't know if they'd move them now) is being shopped for a 'big name, big time defenseman' . Leafs are loaded with forward prospects, maybe the Kings add a young d to that offer

Really looking forward to the Wild - BJ's game at 6 pm (EST). Should be a good one, but I think Columbus is the better team. Watch it go to OT so both streaks continue...

Can't get much closer than that...

Saad at ES. The best PP in years right now. They get you either way.

Yeah they do,. 3.5 goals per game,#1 in NHL, 2.08 goals allowed per game, also #1 in NHL, PP#1...just killing it in every area.

Hoping everyone stays healthy, would love to see the BJ's play the Pens in the playoffs...

PK Subban, Predators, doctors to meet tomorrow to discuss path to treat what is believed to be a herniated disc...

The Sportsnet roundtable guys talked about this during intermission of the Habs Pens game. EF said that PK has been out since 12/5 and Preds have not disclosed the injury, he tried skating yesterday and today and it didn't go well. Surgery would put him out for quite some time.

EF also said that although the Avs are fielding calls from just about every GM , they are not giving players , esp Landy and Duchene away. It will have to be an offer they can't say no to. He did say he feels they want a young top defenseman and a top prospect as part of the package.

The Leafs are loaded with great young F, and there is only one puck, so I could see them trading to a west coast team to get sounder on D. Part of a trade like this could involve the Kings getting a young F they don't have to protect because of 2 and under years on a nhl contact

Listening to some chatter on a podcast and the Avs and their horrendous 12-23-1 record came up. Duchene (Sakic and co) believe will net them a big fish in the young defense pool. They said that Trouba or a similar player is what they are aiming for. As for Landeskog, they mentioned he's been playing with a lower body injury for most of the season and that could potentially affect his value, so they might wait for June to move him. They said Eric Johnson and Barrie should remain but MacKinnon is the only one they felt is untouchable along with prospect Mikko Rantanen. And if Sakic is canned (which they felt would be a good move) the new GM might make whole sales changes.
But they felt Duchene is going soon, and that there are teams calling asking about Tyson Barrie. I like Barrie, he's a good young d who skates and stickhandles very well and would be a good QB on the PP on most teams. He can dodge attacking players and create space, and his outlet passes are pretty good. Good contract. If the Avs are foolish enough to move him in a 'shake up' (Sakic 's done questionable moves in the past) they should get a top return.

Very cool thing for the Canes, due to an emergency situation yesterday, they signed
their equipment manager, Jorge Alves to a contract. he was the backup goalie yesterday. Very well liked by the players, he led the team out onto the ice for warmsup. ANd with the Canes down by 2, they put him in at the end of the game. Jeff Skinner grabbed the puck and gave it to him when the horn blew and the rest of the team mobbed him. That's just a cool thing to do for a guy that has supported the team so well.

really good story.

Can't imagine how that must feel...something he'll never forget

"I'll never forget that look when I looked up at him and he said, 'Get your stuff on.' It was a dream come true," Alves said. "For them to think enough of me to just do that for me was really great."

On Monday, Alves will continue in his role as one of the team's equipment managers. But for one night - and officially for eight seconds in an NHL game - he got to live out his dream as a National Hockey League player with the Carolina Hurricanes.

I caught the video of that. Pretty special. Props to the Canes for giving him those 7.6 seconds of glory.

Yet between periods he was still doing his duties, sharpening everyone's skates. What a night. Love stories like that.

Saw the 3rd period and OT of the Winter Classic. Leafs up 4-1 in the 3rd and the Redwings tie the game with 1.1 seconds left. Matthews scores again in OT. Leafs should have won in regulation, Babcock had too many rookies out there defending in the last minute. But they have a whole bunch of young'uns and I guess they're learning on the job.
Leafs with 41 pts and 36 games played, 1 pt out of a playoff spot with a couple games at hand. 5 straight wins and that is great for a young team, builds their confidence.
Anyway, exciting game for those who braved the weather and ticket prices to see in person.

Matthews is really going to be a great center and leader for them, I think. You can see he is comfortable on the big stage and loves the drama of big moments. Absorbs the pressure well. 20 goals on the season, and prior to the last 17 games where he's potted 14, he had a 13 game goal scoring drought, or he'd have more. I
would love to see he and Laine hit 40, that would be great for the NHL for rookies.

Gotta feeling that the rumors of the Leafs going after Tavares when he hits the market are true. Him and Matthews are a pretty good 1-2 punch in the middle.

And I think given the area they need to fill in is defense, they will use JVR and a one of those stud forward prospects as part of a package to land a top 1 defenseman.

3 points, but 3rd in the Atlantic in points%. Philly has come back to the pack a bit, and Bergeron has 12 points in 36 games for Boston. Tampa has been up and down. The Leafs are in the thick of it.

What the F? So much for the tie down jersey, pads, and shirt rules. Even Perry's like , "Dude"

Old time hockey. Man I miss Simmonds. The forward corps could use a forward with a set of balls like his. Especially to play alongside Kopitar. He lost his balls somewhere, likely when he left the World Cup tournament.

Still by far one of my favorite players in the league with such a cool backstory and I'm so happy he fully developed into what everyone knew he COULD be. Old time hockey player for sure. Glad he's at least in Philly where that is appreciated too.

Simmonds has to be one of the top 3 power forwards in the NHL right now. Only other guy I can think of is Benn.

That Simmonds deal was terrible. Kings could have still won those cups without Richards', especially that second one. Brayden Schenn is as good as MR and could have filled that center slot.

People will argue MR was key to the first cup because he filled the second line center role but I would still argue with the coaching change, calling up King/Nolan and the Carter trade the Kings would have been right there.

Kings haven't developed a center as good as Schenn since Kopitar and Andreoff, Clifford, or Nolan will never be Simmonds.
