No, he didn't, rather the opposite, He inherited a team with a barren, depleted farm system and not many trade able assets. And numerous bad contracts. He had to rebuild from the ashes of the ruin Homer left the team in. And thanks to Homer/Snider mismanagement, it will take years to undo that damage, but he's headed in the right direction.

Right and Lombardi is headed in the wrong direction because when you're at the top of the mountain you spend everything you have to stay up there. We'll have years to tank and stockpile shiny new prospects after the run is over. Also would like to point out then only way to go when you're on top, is down.

Hell it may already be over, but it's better to try and get back having most of the frame in place at this point then to blow it up and start a 5+ year rebuild. Delaying a complete rebuild a couple of years by blowing the farm isn't a big issue.

Philly is still climbing the hill and stockpiling guys and waiting to see what they have. Completely different from where the Kings are.

Let's reverse the saying of "close a door and a window opens" just so I can reply to the above with:

"When a window shuts, a door opens"

Are the Kings supposed to only be competitive while the key members of the Cup teams are productive and then go back to 40 years of being dog ****?

That prospect doesn't help the team this season. No problem with that line of thinking; however, that prospect picks up the slack for said key members as they decline or, even better, injects much needed scoring talent while Carter et al are still producing: possibly as early as next season.

It is beneficial to the team to have a strong prospect pool. It is pretty much the entire basis for the Kings winning two titles. Homegrown talent that remained Kings and then having a deep enough pool to be able to pull the trigger on Richards and Carter.

I have no problem with being behind the all-in moves that DL made; however, I do not agree with the sentiment that losing a high first for zero results is not that big of a deal: especially in a salary cap world.

Let's face it...Lucic was like a night out drinking for DL. Lots of fun looking forward to the night, then the night got going and it was great with drinks flowing freely via the credit card. Unfortunately, too many drinks were purchased and consumed to the point where DL wound up passed out in his own vomit on the bathroom floor of the after party mere minutes after walking in the door. Now he's dealing with a hangover and, more importantly, a maxed out credit card that carries with it an inability to go out drinking again as he only has barely enough money to pay his existing rent and Netflix. That Netflix is important as he isn't going to be doing jack **** for a while except sitting at home and re-watching Narcos over and over hoping that it will somehow be just as good the sixth time he watches as it was the first few times.

Nope a nice fancy 18 year old wing does nothing for this teams current window. Any boost in production from said player can easily be matched by adding a vet at the deadline. In the future the prospect might make the team better, but the only thing that matters at this point is the window. Who cares if the team is slightly better when rebuilding? Now if there was a player available at where the Kings were drafting that played something other then LHD or Wing, maybe that's different.

The Lucic trade paid off and led to one of the best seasons in Kings history. Winning it all is always a long shot, but that doesn't mean just because they didn't win it was a waste of time.

So yeah... The Kings are going to go back to being dog **** when the run is over. Hopefully it'll be a quick rebuild and not a lost decade.

So how does this work with, for example, Prokhorkin versus Dergachyov? Do we still have Porkins' rights? And does that mean we keep Dergachyov's rights until whenever as well (assuming yes here).

Yes and yes. Kings retain both those rights for quite some time (minimum 27, probably longer until Kings decide to release those rights).

Jackets just absolutely wrecking balled the Pens.

We got 3 of 4 points against both of those top teams.

Just food for thought.

The Kings should have had 2 against the BJ's, they were the better team. I've watched every BJ's game this year and that was the laziest 2 and half periods they've played all year. And I don't buy into the media etc, saying it was because it was the first home game after a western Canada road swing. They laid an egg and got very lucky.

Last night was completely different. They smoked the Pens, out skated, outhit, out hustled, outworked and got nasty when they had to.

11th straight win, 16-1-2 in the last 19, very impressive and now the #1 team in the EC. Well deserved, a fun team to watch. They have 4 lines that can skate, most of which play a solid 2 way game and earned the 44 Goal Differential which is tops in the NHL (0n the other hand the Avs GD is -40, that's brutal.) BJ's are a very good team who have a well stocked farm system.

THey have a tough match vs. the Canadians tonight, if they can get by that one, the streak should continue a bit longer as the schedule next week isn't as hard. But Montoya is starting so that should make it a bit easier.

Scott Hartnell had a hattrick last night and the first goal was wicked

Was trying to watch the Eagles and 4 hockey games (the Minny Monty game was good as well) gave the remote a good workup. No matter how bad the Devils are playing, the Flyers (for many years) never can beat them in NJ. So once the Devils went up 2-0, that made the choice easier. They ended up losing 4-0.

Duchene, Landeskog...name a core player and the rumors will be flying once the roster freeze lifts. Something has to give in Colorado.

Avs are beyond the point of skating on thin ice, they've already fallen through the pond.

I've been hearing that for awhile now, that MacKinnon is the only untouchable. On Landeskog, I've always like him and without the pressure of being Captain on a team loses too many games, if they do trade him, I think he'll end up being better for it , under less pressure. I wish there was a way the Flyers could get him, he'd look good next to Couturier.

If the Habs were smart, they'd go after Duchene, they are a bit scarce on centers. You need a top center to make a deep run.

This is a good piece from the Post about the downward spiral of the Avs.

http://www.denverpost.com/2016/12/22/patrick-roy-joe-sakic-colorado-avalanche-mark-kiszla/

Even the players know the winds of change are coming
We have no chemistry,” MacKinnon said. The pieces don’t fit. If it’s time to blow up the roster, is Sakic really the guy you want putting it back together?

Time for Sakic to step down, he's not cut out for the job. A good GM is a shrewd businessman and also a engineer. You have to have and use all the tools required to build a team the right way. The team he's put together, isn't.

I guess that depends on each persons/fans definition of or view of 'the window'. You still an open window for the Kings, I don't. Their window opened in 2010 and that five year run ended in 2014. That Cup (and 3 game 7's in the conference on the way there) was a will over skill run. That was a far cry from the 2012 run. What DL has been trying to do over the past 2 years is like holding onto sand that is slipping through your fingers.
They are good team, with skill core players, however, 3 of them (Kopi, Carter and Quick) are close to 30 or over it.
So that 18 year old winger, could be a part of this team's progress and a big part of the future path. The 'veteran' player won't help them, for the same reason Lucic and Sekera didn't.

Exactly. Lombardi's plan is to get this team with most of the core pieces assembled back into the fight for a cup. It is probably a losing battle, but they're still closer to building a contender then rebuilding. They have Kopitar/Carter/Doughty/Quick. Those are the hard pieces to get. So they put off the rebuild a couple of years because once Kopitar & Carter decline they have bigger issues.

To get back they could probably use another center, an upgrade on Dowd. Carter may slow down at some point and the ability to move him to the wing like Gaborik at that time will come in handy. They need a RHD, so far that's looking like LaDue or possibly a trade. Not that they need another wing, but the Kings still have a couple that might pan out in the minors. Really they're just a few pieces away from being competitive.

Last year they got destroyed in the playoffs because once Martinez went down Doughty was the only puck mover. Scuderi/Muzzin/Schenn/McNabb/Greene. Kings need to play a faster game which means faster transition and D that can move the puck up the ice quickly. While still young Forbort & Gravel will help the transition over guys like Scuderi/Schenn.

not much difference. If you are not a contender, you are rebuilding (and how many/what pieces can vary) to become one.

I like both Forbort and Gravel, and the more they play, get those minutes in in all game situations, the better they will develop. From what I've read/heard. LaDue holds promise, so that is 3 good young d, unless Forbort gets taken in the draft.

Agree on Carter, I've always felt he's much more effective on wing, which is a far less responsible position than center. on wing, his job is to skate and shoot. Does DL think that way? Possibly, maybe he's got that idea penciled in for the near future (Carter's turning 32 in Jan so that should be 'near' future). Of course the CAP is the issue, as for all teams. And there are rumors that both Kadri and JVR are being shopped. The Leafs need a d, would DL trade a defenseman as a part of a deal to get a player like Kadri, move Carter to wing?
Kadri has developed into a much more complete player this year, thanks to Babcock. SOmetimes that is all it takes.

It's funny how one of the talking heads on the NHL Network said this is how Torts wanted the World Cup team to play. The only problem was, they didn't. Plus. a smart scorer like Cam Atkinson at 5-8" never would've made the team.

There are rebuilds and then there are REBUILDS!!!! The Kings don't have the luxury of time. Drafting at this point doesn't really matter as most anyone drafted won't make a large impact on the team until after the wheels fall off. 3-4 years out it's going to take a miracle to keep this thing afloat. This ties into my enthusiasm to tank. The top of draft is where you get guys that might make an impact in a year or two vs 4-5.

Kadri would be interesting. The Kings need more players that get under the skin of the opposition and get them off their games.

If the Avs blow it up, I'd be seeing if there's a deal on EJ that might be possible. (out with a broken leg right now I think) Not going to happen. Oh well.

Given his track record, Sakic might be dumb enough to do that and boy have they struggled on the back end with him out. If the ship is sinking, he and MacKinnon and Barrie shouldn't be moved. Although Barrie's contract would appeal to a lot of teams , if the rumor that Nate Mac is the only true untouchable.

Steve Downie, cut by the Yotes, on Friday was a bit 'spirited' and sent out a series of tweets on Friday (the stronger stuff if you go to his twitter page)that ripped Tippet, the Yotes and Don Cherry.
And that's just the kind of resume an unemployed unskilled hockey laborer wants out there...

some of the tweets are in the article below.

Mike Smith is such a hot head. Totally lost his ****, tried to fight just about everyone one the ice "you wanna f-ing go, let's go!" 3 times he had to be separated from a different Stars player.

Ducks and Kings have the same # of wins (Ducks played two more games) but the Kings are 6-1 in OT and the Ducks 0-6 in OT.

Pierre LeBrun pens a piece on the 5 day break every team gets beg in 2017. On one hand , if you are banged up that break would help, on the other hand, if you are riding a hot streak, playing well , that 5 days might not be so good.
And the compressed schedule it creates will be a challenge.

http://www.espn.com/nhl/story/_/id/...-weeks-pay-dividends-drawbacks-trade-deadline

The Kings break is Feb 9 to 16. They have a rough stretch in March, from the 9th to 31st, 12 games in 22 days and 17 in 30 to end the year.

Some teams are eyeing up key players and thinking on resting them on some nights.

Per @esbbob, if #mnwild win streak reaches 12 and #cbj 14, New Year's Eve will be the first time 2 NHL teams meet with such long win streaks

Both 'next' games for them are tomorrow night, BJ's vs Jets and Minny vs Isles...

Go Blue Jackets...
