Only way Kovalchuk makes sense is on a 1 year deal.

Him and Voynov know each other well. They've been playing together for the last 3 years with St. Petersburg SKA in the KHL.

Doughty and Muzzin play to high and to close to the boards while Kopitar has the puck. And Drew should be on left point where Stoll used to play to open up one-timers and back-door passes from Kopitar.

I’ve noticed since as long as he’s been here the more Doughty moves around the better the PP has been.

Kovy would be a massive mistake. If you're going to make that mistake then you might as well just sign Tavares and destroy the team lol. The Kings need a smart trade more than anything. We need to reallocate some money, maybe trade away some talent for depth and hope to moneyball next year.

To be honest, we either need a shakeup and new leadership/systems or we need to blow it up. We have the pieces to make the playoffs and compete, but we are clearly directionless and playing a dangerous game with our assets.

We need an impact winger, but we have a few that should be doing more already. What we need more than anything is probably more impactful depth, but that can't really be achieved with the system of play we have now. The team is designed to just hold on and stop the bleeding while we hope the first line and maybe the second line can put one in and then just pray Quick can save us. It isn't going to work anymore.

The system doesn't make the players, the players make the system. The Kings use to roll 4 lines. That stopped when they didn't replace Depth like Jarret Stoll.

Stevens is also REALLY quick to shorten the bench. That taxes the top guys a lot faster. It's another negative aspect of John Stevens so far.

Game 4 vs Vegas was an example. He had the top line out there just about every other shift in the 3rd. Kopitar was totally gassed by the end of the game.

This was the first time in a long time that they had little proven depth down the middle. After Carter went down, it was Kopitar, and that was it. Kempe was forced to be a center, and he's not an NHL center yet, if he ever will be. Then there was a mixture of Shore, Amadio, Laich, Mitchell sometimes, eventually Thompson. Then in the playoffs, Carter wasn't up to speed at all, Kempe was in a 2nd half slump, and Kopitar was all they had going. Basically the only forward doing anything consistently.

While I agree that Stevens does seem to quickly leave guys on the bench, there was a context to it as well. He didn't play any forward more than 15 minutes at ES in the 2 full seasons he was with the Flyers. Kopitar ended up at 17 minutes this year. He took around 1200 more faceoffs than the next King. Kempe was 2nd on the team, and he was at 38.5%. It was almost 300 more last year when Carter was healthy. Even if you add Shore and Thompson, Kopitar still took 1000 more than those two combined.

Should Stevens have done something different? Could he?

Capitals look like they have an edge this series, for sure. But Vegas did not look as outclassed as some are claiming. They hit two posts early on and had the advantage in scoring chances. Lots of missed nets tonight for Vegas.

With that said, though, I’m having a hard time seeing how Vegas wins three out of four. Capitals are playing them very tight.

Then again, if Vegas evens it up in game four, who the hell knows.

Been a very close series. Both teams look strong. Washington just has the finish.

Jesus Christ, the Capitals turned over the puck 21 times compared to Vegas’s 7. That’s insane. They’re lucky Vegas flubbed their chances.

All the underlying statistics suggest Vegas should have won this game, including possession and total shot attempts. Unless Vegas is completely demoralized, I say they win game four.

Lots of turnovers by the Caps. The Caps also lost just about every 50/50 puck it seemed. Caps made their chances count though.

Which is all that matters in the end.

But typically those kinds of stat discrepancies come back to bite you over the course of a seven game series.

The meme of Vegas’s lack of high end talent may finally prove itself true. That’s the only conclusion I can draw with the Capitals winning a game like tonight.

Do you guys think you would be interested in something around Anders Lee + conditional pick (if he re-signs) for Jake Muzzin? Or is that not enough?

In terms of value, it makes sense. However, they've made too many deals recently for what turns out to be a rental that I can't see them doing it again with any of their top assets.

Underlying possession and scoring chance numbers are actually much closer, and Washington had many more high-danger scoring chances than Vegas.
