lol...let me get this straight...elimination game, 3rd period, Kings are behind on the scoreboard...and we're giving **** to Stevens about shortening the bench??

That was just a microcosm imo. Doing that every game is why it was a bad idea by that point in the series. Example was Kopitar playing so much in the 2OT game.

It's one thing to shorten the bench, it's another thing to eliminate it entirely. He ran the 1st and 2nd lines out there every other shift. The 4th line didn't see a shift. Did you not see how gasses Doughty and Kopitar the final 3 min? They had NOTHING!

While Stevens has shortened the bed too much, Vegas was f***ing up our fourth line. We need quicker smarter griders and get rid of a couple clowns like AA and Clifford that can't keep up with other teams 4th lines.

Vegas has $34M in cap space available this off season according to NHL numbers. It will be interesting to see what they do with the Karlsson, Perron, and Neil contracts this off season.

NHL Team Salaries, Team Salary Caps - NHL Numbers

Got a feeling they will let Neal go, resign Karlsson, and it will depend on what Perron wants, but they can aggressively go after a John Carlson, or trade for E. Karlsson AND Tavares etc

I wonder if Mcnabb regrets signing that contract extension when he did, you'd have to think he'd get a bit more now.

MAF save pct is well below .900 in this series. Remember when everyone was calling it the greatest playoff performance of all time?

The Caps are making the Golden Knights look very average. Who knew, playing a physically imposing game while attacking the net would work against this group?

The Jets and Sharks and Kings all played a “physically imposing game” and “attacked the net.” They all lost.

Capitals are picking apart Vegas east to west and exposing the mobility on their blueline. That’s why they’re scoring. That’s why they’re winning. Backdoor plays, lateral passes, forcing Vegas’s D apart. Every team who attempted the dump and chase pound the defense style on Vegas came up short.

Capitals are also playing a four man Jacques Lemaire trap that is completely neutralizing Vegas’s formidable forecheck.

The first goal for the Caps was off a rush on the PP, no trying to setup for a point shot, a drive to the net, a rebound, and a goal. The Caps carry the puck deep and pass to the front of the net or create rebounds and generate quality secondary chances by driving the net.

The Kings spent more time in their end and chasing the puck. Like you said, the dump and chase wasn't working and they got exposed for it.

The Caps are playing a brand of hockey that's a cross between the physically imposing Kings hockey of the past, the skill game of the 2010-2015 Hawks, AND the f***ing Guy Boucher "f*** forechecking" eye bleeder special trap.

Props to Trotz who has gotten a lot of shit this year, he's really pushed some magic buttons. Gallant is getting some well-deserved accolades for the whole season, but Barry has gone under the radar.

Definitely agreed.

As K17 always says, the Kings don’t have an identity anymore. They used to have the depth to roll four lines and grind down their opponents with dump and chase relentless forechecking. You really need depth to make that work.

So they opened it up this year, don’t really go to the hard areas anymore, don’t win 50/50 pucks, and don’t wear down anyone but themselves. Its depressing.

In terms of talent, the Caps are also three lines deep and also getting contributions from their fourth liners and bottom pairing dmen. Just look at this lineup on paper...

Ovechkin-Kuznetsov-Wilson
Vrana-Backstrom-Oshie
Burakovsky-Eller-Connolly
Stephenson-Beagle-Smith-Pelly

Kempny-Carlson
Orlov-Niskanen
Orpik-Djoos

12 guys who are homegrown, they traded for Oshie and Eller, acquired Kempny came out of nowhere and was added at the deadline for a 3rd round pick, and the rest have been free agent signings.

Aside from the guys on the top two lines and Carlson, this was not a team that many predicted to make it this far. It shows you how much the desire to win can elevate the performances of many individuals, which is what was happening with Vegas as well right up until they met a hungrier opponent.

It's a very 2012-Kings-ish lineup though. Obviously deeper offensively and shallower defensively, but you get my drift. I've been shitting on Lars Eller for four rounds now but he's risen to the occasion. Someone like Brett Connolly isn't really much better than our third liners--he had 27 points this year--but he's looking good now. Even Orpik has looked like his old self mostly. It's very Dwight-King-goes-nuclear-in-WCF stuff for them.

They even trap on the pk.

Barry Trotz can write his own cheque once this series is over regardless if the Caps win or lose, he’s playing with house money.

Be interesting to see if he resigns in Washington or jumps somewhere else once it’s all said and done.

A bit of an LA connection as current Caps GM Brian MacLellan inching closer to a Cup. Good for him.

Some of you will remember him playing with the Kings for a few years in the early to mid 80’s where he actually had his best statistical season with 85 points, including potting 31 goals (84-85).
