The U-23 thing still has to be the dumbest idea the NHL has come up with since putting a team in Atlanta or the toe in crease rule.

As far as Team USA, I don't see THAT much turnover.

I think we can safely say Brown and Orpik are 100% not going to be on the team. Ryan Miller will probably not be brought back as the 3rd goaltender.

Saad, T. Johnson and Eichel I think will be on the team, and Yandle as well as for as guys that will be on the team that weren't last time.

Edit: I assume the rules are that the national teams get first dibs on any U-23 players before the U-23 team does?

Nope. No Eichel. No Seth Jones.

Wow, that's ludicrous.

This could blow up in the NHL's face if someone like McDavid, Eichel, Jones, Ekblad or Rielly is injured playing for some fake made-up team. I think people can accept injuries representing your country, but not this garbage.

Tourny is SEp 17 to Oct 1

There's a whole lot wrong with the idea, including injuries, like for playoff teams , that have some of those elite players, playing well into June and World Cup Training Camp starting in late August. Those players miss their own training camp for the most part and have to go into a long grueling NHL season.
And there are what about 14 to 15 coaches involved in Team Canada, USA and Young Guns? All those coaches (GM's, trainers) miss their own team's training camps.

The NHL seems to think this will become as important and valued to players as the Olympics, which it won't. It is not the same emotional response , not even close.

The under 24 team is just an awful concept period. So you cheer for McDavid or Eichel to score against their own countries?

LOL at thinking this will match the Olympics.

The NHL just has to accept that the Olympics are here to stay every four years. When it's in North America or Western Europe or when Canada and USA play for gold the NHL will reap the benefits, other times it may be in Korea and Sweden plays Czech Republic.

The fact is the players want it and the fans want it (well except for this board for some reason). I personally believe Olympic Hockey is the Pinnacle of the sport, that 2010 tournament was marvelous hockey.

My birthday is in mid-September, so I was hoping to use the tournament as an excuse to visit Toronto. But the ticket prices are ridiculous, I'm hoping a bunch of affordable tix make their way to the secondary market.

I would have preferred Switzerland/Slovakia been included even if they would have been cannon fodder. I don't mind the U24 concept as much as others, it is an interesting wrinkle to pit the JV against the Varsity. The European leftovers team is the one that bugs me the most.

As it stands, the U24 team is in the same pool as Finland/Russia/Sweden. Only the top two advance from each pool, so who knows if the U24 squad will advance and meet USA/Canada in the semis. The organizers are probably hoping for a Canada/US/Russia/Sweden final four at this rate.

I suppose I was just looking forward to the potential vacation and getting to watch high level players on the cheap, but if they're expecting $100 for nosebleeds........

The future of the NHL, Austin Mathews. Where's the team logo?

Trevor Lewis, come on down!

It will easily exceed the Olympics-- in money to the NHL. Remember, the NHL doesn't make a dime off the Olympics, yet risks injuries to star players.

The World Cup is 100% going to benefit the NHL, from TV rights to ticket prices. Hockey players will love it because it adds to HRR, which directly affects their pay. Most players won't even be part of the tournament, yet should see a benefit in terms of increased salary cap, etc. Owners benefit because the profits are split 30 ways.

DL even asked for an exemption for Eichel. But was told no.

The Jackets look like a completely different team than two weeks ago. This is more what I expected, they are taking it to Vancouver in the 3rd. Who knows if they will score though.

So they are playing great, make a couple mistakes, and the other team capitalizes. They look like the Kings

How many shots did they have in the second, because in their last two game they had 3.

Peter Chiarelli says the 23-and-under World Cup team asked the NHL about carrying an older goalie. The answer was no.

DL even asked for an exemption for Eichel. But was told no.

How long before Eklund reports that Chiarelli offered Jack Eichel to Team USA for Cory Schneider, Nick Bjugstad, and a dessert to be named later?
