Why on Earth would Van trade Petterson now? After all the drama wasn't finally pulling off the Miller trade supposed to cement the 'Nucks' commitment to EP. Didn't they basically just make the choice to keep him over JT? I'm confused.

I think the thinking is Pettersson and the team need a reset. JT pissed off a lot of people in the org, which is why he got moved.

I think another thing the Canucks have decided is they want their forwards to get faster which is why they wanted Chytil and O'Conner.

The math needs to work and no I don’t believe Vancouver would take engvall back. So pick another piece or possibly Canucks retain on boeser but still would need more salary coming back in that scenario.

I just don't see Pettersson for Dobson working at all. For either team really, but especially for Vancouver. Would leave the Canucks with Chytil - Suter - Bluegers at Center . Dobson is also going to be looking for a huge contract either this summer or very soon. I don't see any way the Canucks could spend that much on defencemen. They'd have 3 guys at easily $7M+, Pettersson at $5.5M. With a new Dobson deal...that probably puts them somewhere just south of almost $30M locked up in 4 defencemen...all while having absolutely jack squat at Center ice up front, and absolutely nothing of note in the pipeline coming along. Whereas their best prospect is a defenceman who will hopefully be stepping into a Top-4D role relatively soon.


Now...if it were something like Pettersson for Barzal + Pulock...it might make a little more sense to me. But it's hard to see how Pettersson to Isles works without Barzal coming back. And even that's really contingent on whether they see him as being able to hold it down as a center. There has to be at least a Top-6 Center coming though...and Nelson in this scenario is probably staying, Horvat seems unlikely to go back to Vancouver, Barzal is really the only somewhat viable option.

Thought are that the Sabres need to make the playoffs. They get an experienced right shot, 1st pairing defenseman and improve down the middle.

Islanders need to do something or burn it down. They get a prime 1C and a high scoring RW

Canucks are probably past the point of recovery but Hughes is young enough for a rebuild. They get a potential Boeser replacement and very high pick, in order to start a quick turn around.

Miller and him publicly feuding, Miller got the vast majority of minutes with Hughes. Hronek was injured and Pettersson's most common defensive pairing was Soucy - Myers, which was a disaster.

When Miller was out and Pettersson got to play with Hughes, he played well. Hughes has been out since Miller left, so we haven't seen that continue, also the powerplay is garbage.

There has been whispers of NYI and Van for so long, you have to believe that they're talking, but barring some crazy deck chair re-shuffling type deal, I just don't see these as two teams that line up right now.

Canucks have been reported (through sources of varying reputability) to be interested in Dobson, Holmstrom, and Nelson (the Danny kind) as well as the "Joe Sakic will eventually come home" BC connection to Barzal. But all of that seems to have been talks that made sense before they acquired Chytil and Pettersson.

Unless the Islanders simply adore Petey, and are trying to get Horvat a friend or something, what would they have to gain by not simply flipping Dobson to a team that would love a potential top pairing young RHD? I'm sure there would be no end of offers, regardless of how good they might be.

He didn’t train much in the offseason and he took some criticism for that at training camp from Miller. Hes also been in his head because of his poor start from not being in game shape, the drama with Miller, the media spotlight on him and he had to step away from social media because he was getting consumed with it all. He may not be a good fit for Tocchet’s system as well.
