really? seems odd they would have to take 30 players...
Why they will have to have a farm system as well. So players will be playing in the AHL also.

The Arizona Coyotes have acquired the negotiating rights for defenceman Alex Goligoski from the Dallas Stars in exchange for a 2016 fifth round draft pick. Goligoski will be a free-agent on July 1 if not signed to a contract.

Some of them are likely to be waiver exempt so they can go to the AHL, for example, they have to pick 3 goaltenders, they almost certainly won't carry 3.
Yeah but in theory they'll be picking 30 NHL roster players. I can't see a player who's playing on an existing team becoming an AHL player for a expansion team. If they could pick prospects, the AHL angle makes more sense. I guess they would end up trading a bunch of their guys back to other teams for prospects and picks.
BTW, I wonder where Vegas' AHL team will be? Reno? Laughlin? Stateline?
I think it was said they had to keep at least half of the players they take. But they can trade to any other teams to get more draft picks.
The other interesting part will be the side deals. Getting players or picks to take or not take a specific player.
The rumors for where the AHL team will be has a few choices including some in CA. Fresno, Sac and Reno all all in there.
Yea, the only caveat being they can't trade a player back to the originating team within a year.

That only applies to players a team trades.
So if say the Kings traded King after Jan 1st 2017. Then he was taken by Vegas. We couldn't trade Vegas for him until Jan 1st 2018.
So no they could take a player and trade him back, according to the rules as we know them now.
Expansion draft history:
1998 :Los Angeles traded Kimmo Timonen and Jan Vopat to Nashville after the Predators agreed not to select Garry Galley.
1999 expansion draft Taylor and Co. decided to protect 2 goalies
Nashville also agreed to take Chabot, which meant the Kings wouldn't be at risk to lose Storr or Feces in the next expansion draft.
Those two goaltenders were so embarrassing.
I thought Fiset was a very solid Goalie. Too bad the D in front of his sucked.

The Kings were a playoff team for 3 of Fiset's 5 seasons here. Not like they were a disaster.
He was just another in the long line of awful goaltenders brought in by the Kings. I remember that 2001 season the Kings had a pretty good team but the biggest collection of garbage in net with Storr, Fiset and Passmore. They finally got a real goalie at the deadline and were likely a goal post away from having a very deep run.
That post still haunts me, even though we've won since then. I know they would've crushed the Blues in the next round and could have potentially won it all in the Finals.
I remember just being proud the kings pushed the avs to 7. Looking at the Avs D they had Blake, Bourque, and Foote playing 30 minutes a night.
That is friggin nuts. Imagine having 3 30 minute guys on todays roster!
I mentioned this in another post but what are the odds Nikolai Porkhorkin comes in and gives us the 3C we desperately need????
Honestly he'd likely be cheaper and better than what's available in UFA and has minimal risk....
Yeah it was still pretty impressive. Didn't Peter Forsberg come back from having his appendix removed just in time for that series or something? The Avs D reminds me a bit of the 07 Ducks, with 2 Hall of Famer's and a good supporting cast on the back end.
Last I heard he had agreed to terms to a 4-year KHL deal. Not sure if he signed for certain but it's very very very doubtful.
