What a bizarre criticism to make. Every year 16 GM's try to rent a cup run. Every year, only one of them succeeds. Does that make the other 15 GM's failures? Every year, only one GM can get a Brad Stuart for a 2nd and 4th and win a cup with them.

no, you can evaluate the process. deadline moves can be good even if team loses in the first/2nd round round (jets last season, sharks few years back). and they can be bad to medicore even if team wins the cup (hawks last year).

Went after Myers several times. Rumored to be after Bogosian several times. Green just turned 30, he's not that old.

I think we will hear our name come up at the deadline. We are going to have a forward or two sitting that deserve to play somewhere, so we could either spare them or one of the regulars easily.

Yep agree, Pretty sure that if Big Buff is available at the trade deadline. It's safe to assume that Detroit will be one of the teams linked to him.

Couldn't agree more, Pretty sure why Phaneufs name was mentioned to Detroit was because of Babs wanting him. And now that Babs is with the Leafs any mentioning of Phaneuf to the Wings can quietly go away.

And our blueline sucked. It was a pretty clear hole on our roster, and we still could do with another upgrade back there, just not as desperately.

I say top2, which I consider Buff to be. We have like 4 guys who can play middle pairing. What we need is someone to take E out of the top pairing spot.

I agree. If he isn't an upgrade over DD or can't play on the top pair, he isn't worth acquiring.

Till he gets in Babs doghouse then Kenny gets a phone call offering Dion for Glendening, and Quincey :naughty::popcorn:

EDIT- And Cleary ;)

Oh I agree big time that our blueline sucked, And we can still use a major upgrade on it that's pretty much our problem going for is our defence. Our Offensive core is solid and will only get better we've got a young vezina caliber goalie with Mrazek we just need a decent upgrade on the backend and this team will compete.

No way Holland goes for Dion the caveman at this point. It was Phaneuf/Franson/Myers/Petry or hold out for Green. The Wings and their fans won big time. There's no way we see Phaneuf's stoopid heinous contract in Detroit while Green is still on his very reasonable one.

Dion's contract is just too dumb...even trading Q on the last year of his contract for Phaneuf doesn't make sense...even if Toronto ate the salary difference this year because Caveguy is signed for $7m per till the sun burns out(2021?). Insane.

I think Green's contract keeps us safe from Phaneuf.

Like nearly everyone else I'd like to see Holland trade for a legit partner for Kronwall that would allow Blash to move #52 down to the 2nd or 3rd pairings where he belongs. Such a move would make Q expendable(if he's not part of the trade) and could make the Wing's blueline corps look quite respectable for the first time in some while. Hopefully some of the young guns up front can make some waves between now and the trade deadline so that they become viable trade bait. DDK and Gator are due a raise next season so that'll gobble up most of what the Wings will save by NOT re-signing KFQ. Ideally I'd like to see some combination of Q, Helm, Nyquist, Tatar, Smith, Kindl, etc used to obtain an upgrade on the top pairing. Make it happen Kenny!

While i share your sentiment with Phaneuf's contract being awful, i worry that Holland is going to do what Holland does best, bring back Quincey on a multi year deal.

In Bucci's latest article he mentioned that Detroit could be a dark horse landing spot for Stamkos this summer. Do you guys think Kenny has any shot of getting this done? Would be pretty sick.

I honestly think Toronto might get him. Tank this season which gets them a high draft pick + Babcock might be very enticing.

Holland might have a shot, but if he tries to get cute with the cap hit, i don't expect him to come to Detroit.

I think Kopitar would be a better fit for Detroit, but obviously i would gladly drive to the airport and pick either of them up and drive them to the Joe.

No thanks, not for what he'd cost. All resources be it money or assets should be going towards solidifying the defense. Our forward core is stupidly deep.

It was absolute complete speculation based on what I saw.

Maybe Cleary will work itself out. The cap is rough next season, but if Holland can convince Stamkos that he is a man of his word, he can offer him a shorter cheaper contract now and then promise a more fitting one later. ;)

Here's the Buccigross quote on Stamkos for those interested:

A deep playoff run is possible. They have good depth to use as trade bait if needed, and with their talent and cap space, the Detroit Red Wings are in a great position to continue their playoff streak for another decade. People talk about Steven Stamkos possibly signing with the Toronto Maple Leafs if he chooses not to re-sign with the Tampa Bay Lightning. If I'm Stamkos, though, and I'm looking from a pure hockey standpoint to play for an old, traditional brand, the Red Wings are potentially my landing spot. A new arena is coming in 2017, and there's lots of young talent to shoulder the load.

Here's the Buccigross quote on Stamkos for those interested:

Would obviously love to have Stamkos, but it seems unlikely for a number of reasons - mainly we are very deep at forward and weak on the back end. Unless Holland can transmute some of that forward depth into a legitimate d-core (regardless of how taboo human transmutation may be), that's where we need to spend.

I do think our new arena, coupled with Blashill and a talented farm will make Detroit a much more attractive destination for free agents in the immediate future though.

Its not a critisism of the process of renting, its a critisism of who he picked up, what he spent, and the level of contention at the time. All factors of which made them horrible wasteful moves.

Oh good lord I forgot about the Phenuf rumors, stop just please stop.

Either Kopitar or Stamkos would be sick wearing a winged wheel, but I rather see the defense get shored up before we go dumping a $7m bag of money on a center. We still have a couple years with #13 and hopefully a bit more before #40 & #55 really fall off. Still think the Eurotwins + a great supporting forward cast have what it takes to lead the team to the promise land if they had a solid blueline corps to work with. Kronwall, Green, & DDK are 3 good defenders...the Wings need one more of that caliber to call them "ready" imo.

Really think this team is close to good enough to be a legit threat for the Conference title if not the cup. If I thought about what would push them over the edge into elite status...is it a $7m forward or a $7m defender? With the current roster, it's still the defense that needs the upgrade to my mind.

If we could shore up our D, Could you Imagine a Kopitar and Larkin tandem Centering the top 2 lines for the foreseeable future this team would be lethal.

Is that even remotely possible? When is the last time a free agent of that caliber hit the market? Closest might be Parise and Suter? Seems like a pipe dream lol
