bolded are way better than ericsson. the ones who aren't bolded, their role/lack of better replacement is a big issue on their team.

Maatta is a pretty damn good replacement possibility for Cole. If not him, Pouliot is way better than any prospect we have.

Doesn't Alzner play big minutes, or is it Orpik?

Also, since Lidstrom retired, Ericsson has almost exclusively been terrible on the top pair. When you have to clear the crease a lot, that means you're not holding the puck, and Ericsson is just a blackhole in terms of getting the puck out of the zone. When he's on the ice, he puts more strain on Z, Pavs, Tats, etc in breaking the puck out of the defensive zone. Pretty sure he has the worst zone exits of anyone on the team.

Because of our lack of quality defensemen, Ericsson gets relegated to roles that he is not fit to play.

Saying that E isn't good enough to play top pair, or that he makes a lot of mistakes on the top pair, is all completely accurate and fair to say. It's not only his fault, but it is partly his fault.

There is a vast difference between saying the guy isn't quite good enough to be a top pair defenseman (which he isn't paid to be) and saying he's trash and shouldn't be on this team. People need to acknowledge he's a guy playing above his head at the moment and cut him a little slack.

Fair enough. Let's all hope he looks better this year. If not, we have a lot of assets we can move.

Let's drop the puck already! :)

I can't stand Ericsson, but I do think he wouldn't be as dreadful getting the puck out if he played the left side instead of the right side. He's horrible on the backhand, it never seems to make it across the blue line. Like you said, he needs a role that he fits into. The current one isn't it.

I still find it a bit puzzling that we saw Brendan Smith play some of his best hockey alongside Kronwall a couple years ago and have barely seen it since.

So, Larkin for Calder. Am I right?

That would cause a cap problem for next season... with a 2M bonus. Kind of every 1st round pick has that Trophy Clause on their contract as default.

...won't like it at all. I hope he is great but somebody else will win the Trophy. Calder Trophy -runner up would be best thing to happen.

I'd much prefer to have a better player for 2M more. He's the future face of the franchise. I want him to be as good as possible.

Sure why not? Justin Abdelkader+Jimmy Howard for Justin Faulk.:sarcasm:

Oh my goodness make it happen. I would give up just about anything with the exception of Larkin for Faulk right now.
What the hell has happened with our D prospects? We have middle of the road, lucky to make the NHL prospects where we had thought (and hoped) for legitimate NHLers in XO and Sproul in particular.

As optimistic and excited as our forward youth makes me, one look at our D prospects brings me back down to earth; the team will never take that next step with what we have currently and in the pipe line on the back end.

Same here, No way would that get us Faulk. Most likely it would be at least Larkin++ for Faulk I would imagine.

Abdelkader and Howard are officially at the peak of their trade values, I vote ship them out for a young D-man.

Howard at the peak of his trade value? He's played one regular season game since losing his starting job in the playoffs to a 22 year old with like 30 games of experience. He is not close to the peak of his trade value.

Wings best bet on Howard would be for him to play well until the deadline and then have a contenders goalie go down so we can actually get something for him. Then we use those assets to land a d upgrade.

If we traded Howard...

who backs-up Mrazek??

I mean in all truth, I think having BOTH of them, is a significant advantage. for this year and maybe next year too.
(Win more games = better playoff position = deeper run vs weaker opponents)... It is not insignificant to have 2 NHL starters on your team, assuming we qualify Mrazek as that.

I agree it would be a strength to have both of them at least this season. If we traded Howard at the deadline we'd certainly need to get a backup to Mrazek somehow.
It's probably better to explore Howard trades during the offseason. I doubt any team would acquire a long-term goalie like Howard just because they get a short-term injury to their #1.

Trade him this summer or next, sign a UFA, there is always back up goalies available in free agency.
