Marchment and Joshua were good prospects. Marchment went on to play 6 games in Florida's farm system before playing the next two seasons in the NHL. Joshua had a poor first year where he was developing? I guess and the next season he saw a bulk of NHL games and now he is full time. Within 2 seasons of trading Joshua he was in the NHL, but he wasn't even worth an ELC in Toronto,. Most of the players don't make it. He did but wasn't good enough for an ELC here. That's just poor scouting.

It made no sense not to like Marchment for Malgin for a lot of people as well. I'm guessing they have changed their tune.

I prejudged the deal because it fell in the line with how Dubas opperates. It was the final straw for me. I tried to support him through the Kadri trade and all the others. But, I simply don't like the way he assembles a hockey team. Even if Douglas doesn't make the NHL I no longer support his thought process of team assembly. He undervalues physicality and I like physical hockey. I don't like seeing our home grown Clarks and Tuckers shipped off for the softest players on other teams (Kerfoot+Barrie) and (Malgin).
I agree with you here …GLG

“He undervalues physicality and I like physical hockey. I don't like seeing our home grown Clarks and Tuckers shipped off for the softest players on other teams (Kerfoot+Barrie) and (Malgin).”

And also his inability to recognize this very glaring deficiency and not address this as well .
One very perplexing thing that is even more stunning is how Shanny doesn’t seem to recognize this as well ??? When every team he’s won with all had that balance and serious role players to offset the elite with , it puzzling to me .
I’m a fan of Dubas in so many other areas of his tenure except for this obvious downfall and necessity on this team ???
Other than a top 6 LWer
We do not need any more smoothies and “ the same type of offensive players “ big or small …
Our 3rd and 4th line centers in Kampf and Holmberg are terrific and give us the best 4 centers .
But after that it’s 4 players that are basically the same or two old to bring it or not gifted at all ..
We need another type of player to add to those centres , hitters , grinders , youthful or older but that can skate and is hungry and plays with an edge and hits at all turns , every time all the time .and tough as nails .
Also one tough hombre on Defense .

I hear ya. Please put an end to this Kerfoot/Engvall style of bottom 6 already.

Giordano finally had a substandard game! Inevitable with the high minutes he has played the past 3 weeks. The Leafs are finally set up very well on D with Rielly, Sandin and Giordano being lefties......Liljegren, Timmins and Holl being righties.... and Brodie shooting left but being equally capable playing either side! This luxury enables them to rotate one dman out each game. We've heard it said that after the season is underway, most guys play through some minor injury or another. What actually happens is that they often compensate for that injury and develop a more severe injury! So having 7 capable dmen (supported by Jordie Benn, Mete, Holloway and Kral on the Marlies) is a fantastic situation for managing workload to be in optimum shape for the playoffs.

Ya, good luck with all that.

Conor Timmins is not exactly sure what went wrong with the Arizona Coyotes, but the young defenceman is OK with that. He’s found a home on the Maple Leafs blue line.

“It’s been great,” said the St. Catharines-born Timmins. “To come into a winning team has been really fun.”

While the Leafs are coming off a winless two-game road trip through New York and Washington, the 24-year-old blueliner has been opening eyes with six points in six games — including a nifty assist on Auston Matthews’s 18th goal of the season in Toronto’s 5-2 loss to the Capitals on Saturday night.

“He plays with his head up.” said Leafs coach Sheldon Keefe. “If you’re a forward and you get your stick available, he’s going to find you. It’s been a real nice addition and you can see the difference that he makes offensively."

“For a guy to just find sticks and finds plays for us — on the offensive side of the red line, especially — has really helped us out, and he’s been getting rewarded. His confidence is growing.”

That has always been Timmins’s game. He was a standout on Canada’s world junior champion team in 2018, with current teammate Victor Mete.

“He’s a steady defenceman who can chip in offensively,” Mete said. “Good first pass and breakouts and good closing gaps. Obviously he’s matured, but I think he’ll be a good fit over here.”

.............................

“I just didn’t gain a lot of traction in Arizona,” said Timmins, who suffered a season-ending knee injury in his sixth game last year. “Coming into this year I was just trying to work my way back from that (injury) ... They were great to me there, but I think the system here just fits my game perfectly, so I’m excited.”

.............................

“He’s defended well,” said Keefe, whose club will host the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday night. “He’s got good size, good stick and a body that can get in the way. To me, it’s just about more game repetition and experience playing in the league. He’s had a lot of disruptions over his short pro career, and we’re trying to get him as involved as we can through this stretch while we’re dealing with our own injuries ... to give him opportunity to keep taking it to another level and adding different layers to his game.”

The Leafs’ game — puck possession, quick passes — suits Timmins to a T. That’s the way Dubas has liked teams to play going back to his OHL days with the Soo Greyhounds. He also drafted Timmins back then.

“He’s continuing to get more and more comfortable with his own game, and figuring out how his own game fits into the way we play and our style and our structure,” said captain John Tavares. “So, I think he’s continuing to fit in really well.”

Timmins agrees: “I think obviously everything happens for a reason. And for my career to end up here, it’s been a blessing for me and I’m really excited about the future.”

The only problem I have with Timmins is not knowing how he's going to stand up to the grind of playing on a nightly basis, if that's what he ends up doing.

With the number of bodies the Leafs have on the blueline, hopefully they don't have to lean heavily on him if he's not ready and needs load management.

No guarantee that any player will 'stand up' to that type of ice time, injury history or no.

So far the kid looks good IMO.

There was a line change in the Washington game where Timmins wasn't afraid to just hold the puck in open ice between the circle and just wait and wait and wait before making a play. It's not much of a play but usually you see it with more of the alpha dogs who have the confidence to take their time and control the tempo.

He looks great alongside Brodie, who is one of our most calming and intelligent defenceman. Brodie seems to make everyone he plays with more comfortable and confident and it always seems to help them play to the best of their abilities and I think that's exactly whats helping Timmons gain the confidence I'm sure he has been missing with all the injuries and the team movements.

I find myself agreeing with you a lot.

Fighting majors, as a methodology to rank most physical defenseman?

Is this serious?

FWIW.. Timmins has more hits per 60 than Rielly, Giordano, Hollowell, Holl.... who you've ranked ahead of him on your list. He's not settled into his role yet, and he's playing conservative. Hitting has very much been part of his game, but it doesn't make sense to go out of your way, when you are trying to establish yourself. Play safe, within yourself, don't take yourself out of the play... learn quiet defense first. Once that becomes second nature, feel free to flatten some people.

""

I wish I could find the video, where he flattened someone entering the zone.

Joshua? Are you talking about Leivo? WTF does Leivo have to do with anything? He's your textbook AAAA player... really good at the AHL level, barely NHL quality. 29 years old, and nothing more than a journeyman.

You keep mentioning Douglas, and "Producing like Leivo did with the farm team". This can't be serious can it? Leivo can skate... Douglas... his straight line speed was ok last year... it seems to have gone away this year, and his first few steps and edgework aren't good. You keep comparing him to Leivo, and Marchment, two guys who can skate, while he can't. If you can see Douglas working his way up the lineup, return your crystal ball for a refund.

Maybe get on the trade for Luke Schenn bandwagon.. he's leading the NHL D men, with FOUR fighting majors this year. That four fighting majors, is more than the number of games Douglas will ever play in the NHL. Personally, I'd sign him as a depth UFA next year, but I'm not trading a 2nd + prospect for him now.

Great to see Timmins stand up Benn... don't think Benn saw that coming.

Glad to have him because Leafs need to start load managing some players near the end of the season.

Something like:
Rielly - Lily
Brodie- Holl
Sandin - Timmins

Or
Rielly Brodie
Sandin - Lily
Benn - Timmins
