I would love the jets to pick him up for a year.Gives some of the young guys one more year in the minors and instantly gives us the 3rd line centre who is good at faceoffs and PK and can play with good players that we are missing.

This is not true at all. Guy had 17 goals and 20+ assist.

16 of his points were on the PP. He logged nearly 17 minutes TOI last year. I think his point totals are more of an indication he was forced to play a more offensive role than he's suited for. He's not a PP guy on a good team.

Perhaps his time on the Hawks taints my view. He wasn't good with us.

Perhaps Arizona needed to shed $2.5m in salary this season before they could sign Rieder to a bridge deal.

Seems like some combination of Arizona trying to save $$$ after signing some other significant deals like Gogo's...and trying to giftwrap some roster spots at Center for Strome and Dvorak i guess? Alongside Hanzal and Richardson as the veteran defensive centers?

Seems kinda stupid and completely unnecessary to me. But then, i'm not an analytics wizkid running a team on a dollar store budget i guess. :rolly:

Horrible move by a horrible team and general manager

Remember that Vermette was traded and brought back into the fold primarily by Maloney. As shocking as this move may seem, remember that Maloney was fired b/c there were organizational views that were not consistent with management. I wonder if Chayka had actually done his homework and suggested not picking up Vermette last offseason, but he was vetoed by Maloney. So, as much as people want to treat this as a money thing, the reality is that Chayka likely had very minimal ties to any players that were picked up prior to him joining the Coyotes staff.

As for Vermette himself, he is a good player, but it was also clear that he lost a step. Boedker being paired with him helps explain some of the reduction in numbers, but a veteran like Vermette should also be good enough to help the upcoming talent. It may have become clear that the upcoming talent could be good enough to outpace Vermette anyhow. There may even be something else that we don't know about regarding his decline.

This.

Arizona constantly gets bailed out by the league, they aquire contracts like Pronger and Datsyuk then they go and make a 27 year old advanced stats geek their GM after firing Maloney.

What a joke :shakehead

This post is dripping in irony, but let's just go with this and say, if it's such a horrible move, then since the Maple Leafs are first in line on the waiver wire (because of that stunning aptitude they have shown at doing hockey things for so long), they should capitalize on the Coyotes' ineptitude and quickly snatch up Vermette as the last piece for their long, long, long, long, long-delayed Cup run! :yo:

i dont get it, they took on Datsyuk's contract.. that means they most likely wont be contending this upcoming season.

Vermette has 1 year left and he might have returned something at the deadline, so why would he buy him out? I guess they wanna make room for 1 of their youngsters but why wouldnt they just move Richardson (or someon else)?

28 other teams had the chance to trade for Pronger and Datsyuk, so it is not like the Coyotes were the only team that could go after those two.

And I am pretty certain that the 27 year old stats geek probably had what would be considered a very strong offseason. Does this put a damper on it? Maybe. But what if the whiz kid is right and the young players actually outplay Vermette? Doesn't sound like a joke to me...

You do know they're not actually paying their salaries, right?
So they made it easier to get to the cap floor

Seems like a strange move to me. Not that I know the Coyotes situation that well or anything. I'd imagine Vermette can get a cheap 1 year deal from a contender and go for another cup.

It is a joke! Getting rid of a guy for nothing because young kids might out play him? Why not make them prove it in camp and the pre season?

And the Coyotes are helping cap circumvention with the Pronger and Datsyuk deals. I'm sure the other teams in the league wouldn't be able to do that because they aren't partially owned and being bailed out by the league. If the NHL started punishing the Coyotes they would probably just fold or relocate Hahahaha

Could it be to open up cap space to sign Rider and bring in Trouba or Shattenkirk? If so, not a bad move.

Pronger, Datsyuk, Doan, Stone, Michalek, White and Hanzel come off the books and it frees up about $22M.

Ya I do know that. They should have to get to the cap floor legally like every other team. But nope Arizona gets special treatment from the league since they are unable to sustain their team LOL.

I believe Vermette was bought out, so not currently on waivers.
He is UFA, meaning he can sign anywhere he chooses.

Still cant believe Vermette showed loyalty to this franchise, which is what makes this buyout worse...
