Officially bought out.

http://coyotes.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=890374

"In order to give our team more flexibility, we needed to make this difficult decision,†said Chayka. “This move will provide an opportunity for some of our young, talented players to step up. Antoine is a class act and we thank him for all he did on and off the ice for the Arizona Coyotes organization. We wish him the best in the future."

This is what happens when you hire a advanced stats nerd instead of a hockey man to run the show

Loosing a good player for nothing because of some random 5v5 PPG% ES differential blah blah blah :shakehead

I mean these are only assumptions right now. We dont actually know why they are buying him out

If someone is going to throw an offer sheet, it might as well be the new-school GM.

True, but that's probably a terrible move in the long run. Chayka has built up none of the goodwill that comes with being a member of the Old Boys Club and it wouldn't shock me at all if a lot of the NHL brass resent him for getting handed a team at that age.

So this is rather interesting, huh.

Overall:

In 919:28 of ice time, Vermette had 16 points in 5v5.

Close:

In 559:24 of ice time, Vermette had 6 points in 5v5.

So we could conclude that he's pretty useless when the match is close, or in other words "when it matters".

Can you? He's known primarily as a defensive center and thus would be used in that role so in a "close" game situation he'd likely be out protecting the lead, suppressing the opponent instead of creating offense and in a "close" game with the team trailing he'd likely have less of a role with the coach opting for a more offensively dynamic forward group. Vermette's a good player. Solid defensive veteran center. He has value, Coyotes must need the roster spot/cap space for something imminent cause otherwise a buy out with 1 year left makes zero sense.

Ya this doesn't make much sense unless Arizona has something big brewing.

Even if they wanted to roll with Strome and Dvorak down the middle, Vermette can still play #3/4C.

Hard to say - Vermette was primarily in a 2nd/3rd line role for the Coyotes last year, which isn't much different than what he had played before. But he did not look as quick and explosive last season.

While Strome isn't necessarily quick, he has the size to work with. Dvorak is probably more like Vermette, so why put a declining player into a 3rd/4th line role when the only thing that he does well in contributing to that role is to win F/Os? I wouldn't turn Vermette into a "sell your body shot-blocker," nor as a "grind-it-out toughness in the corners and on the forecheck" type of player. We have several other of those either as young prospects (Gaudet, Dauphin) or a player like Richardson as a veteran. If the view is that Dvorak = Vermette, then this is fine, although Arizona still will likely want a depth forward.

I guess the Coyotes already had all the LTIR contracts they could acquire, so they are now looking at buyouts as a way to get as much dead cap space as possible.

So a defensive center.

Defensive zone starts 34.28%, offensive zone starts 30.97%. There is a slight bias towards defense but not a whole lot.

Corsi against per 60: 65.43

Team Corsi against per 60: 59.97

So they seem to be doing better defensively without him on the ice.

Shouldnt a good defensive center have good shot suppression numbers? Vermette certainly doesnt have that....

I can't speak to how he played last year because I saw very little but over the course of his career he's proven to be a solid defensive 2/3C with some offensive upside. If his play has declined as much as the advanced stats suggest than maybe a buyout is justifiable but even if that was the case keeping him on as a plan B if the young Cs they're hoping to promote don't work out seems like a way better option than a buyout.

should go with Kelly back to the Sens so they can try for a full classic line imho

So how many young forwards on opening night roster for the Yotes?

Without any more acquisitions looks like 3 rookies right now. Strome, Dvo, Fischer...?

If you want to include the "young" talent, 7 forwards under 25.

Domi - Hanzal - Duclair
McGinn - Strome - Doan
Reider - Dvo - Fischer
Martinook - Richardson - White

In terms of years in league?? Maybes in italics below

True 1st year players: Strome, Dvorak, Dauphin, Gaudet, Perlini, Fischer, Samuelsson

Dauphin and Gaudet have had some call-ups over the past few seasons. Other names on the back end are Looke and Karlsson. My understanding was that Looke was fairly competent at rookie camp, so who knows?

But I would put my best guess at 3 young forwards who were not on the opening night roster this year from last year...

I thought he was waived. Don't they have to wait until he clears before actually buying him out or did he have an NMC?
They have to put him on waivers for purpose of buyout. The player then has 24 hours to accept the waivers or just be bought out. He apparently was pretty quick to say "buy me out suckas"

I'd get this if, and only if, the Yotes were hard against the cap, but that's clearly not the case.

Vermette's an okay player, his contract isn't bad, there's no term left after this season, and the Yotes have cap space. I don't know if I'm more surprised that they're doing this or if the Yotes couldn't find a single trade partner for him. Vermette at half retained for.... what? A third? Better? Doesn't sound too unrealistic to me.
