Tavares and Matthews are both players that I would consider franchise players. The better question would be, is Mitch Marner a franchise player?

Having a Paul Stastny tier C seemed impossible
Eh, many of us had faith that Kadri would turn into the kind of player that he has, so I wouldn't say that a Paul Stastny-level C was ever out of the realm of possibility.

Matthews/Tavares/Kadri, however, was elite center depth beyond my wildest dreams - I don't think I even would have traded for that kind of a lineup in a video game, because it would've felt too OP and unrealistic. What an incredible time to be a Leafs fan...

Mitch has the ability to elevate his game to that level IMO.
He's a special mold type winger that you can build around, like Ovi/Kane.
You could argue that Kane is more the franchise player for Chicago than Toews.
However you want to classify it, we are extremely lucky to have them all.

There seems to be lots of negativity on the main boards, with regards to Matthews and Tavares. You would think they are 3rd-4th liners the way they are bashed on here by the Leaf haters.

This is for Leaf fans only. Do you believe Tavares and Matthews are #1 Franchise C's.

For me, they are 2 of the very best in the NHL today.

Yes both are elite #1C and franchise players.

Quite frankly, you're a hater if you do not believe that both #1 overall centres are NOT franchise players.

Tavares has been a franchise C ever since stepping into the NHL for a pathetic Islander franchise, he has done nothing but produce surrounded by mediocre talent for 9 seasons. So unless you assume he is quickly going to take a step back from the player he has been then he is absolutely a Franchise player.

A lot of non Leaf fans will argue that Matthews has not done enough yet to be considered a Franchise level player, I have watched every Matthews game since he entered the league.....he is without a doubt in my mind already a Franchise player and still getting better. There is no reason to believe that Matthews won't be the 2nd best C (never reaches McDavid level) in the NHL during his prime.

That is a very valid question.

If Marner continues to elevate his game, then he seriously has potential to be a franchise player.

No kidding. Just take a look at the main boards on here... you will see that both Matthews and Tavares are 4th line spare parts.

Ranking today, I'd have Tavares at #6 and Matthews at #9.

The only close duo's are Crosby/Malkin, and McDavid/Draisaitl (and that's only because McDavid is so good).

And Draisaitl has only really played at an elite level when he's been on McDavid's wing. Alone, he's been good, but not a clear franchise guy.

Mitch has the pure skill and hockey sense to be the most productive player on the team.

Much like Kane usually out produces Toews even though Toews plays a more valuable position.

Having a Marner (and Nylander) to play with either elite C is an insane abundance of riches.

Yup. Draisaitl is statistically a worse player than William Nylander/Mitch Marner, but people (especially Edmonton fans) put him on this crazy pedestal where he's basically in the Eichel tier.

#McDavid

Kadri is better than Stastny all day long. Have to a agree.

IMO Toronto has the best 3 C’s in the NHL.

McDavid/Draisaitl are not even close to Matthews/Tavares.

Draisaitl is way way below the Toronto C’s.

McDavid is so much better than everyone else in the league (yes, including Crosby).

Just remember, Matthews only played 62 games too.

Do you think William Nylander is a franchise player? Because if not, Mitch Marner isn't one either.

Why can't someone who just watched Marner's 2nd half and playoffs think he has more room to grow and become a franchise player as compared to a Nylander?

Many have always thought Marner had higher upside and could be the best, in terms of point production, of all the players we've drafted and developed.

If he leads a team in scoring that has 2 franchise C's wouldn't that make him a franchise player?

Exact same logic could also apply to Nylander.

You're right, maybe I've pushed Nylander a little too far lately.

I just don't understand how the one who's been better so far in his career (and a lot less lucky), is the forgotten/expendable player, where as the other guy who's only been better on the PP is the "Soon to be Franchise Superstar"

I don’t think that McDavid is that great. Yes, He is highly skilled but I don’t have him as the next coming of Christ, sorry.

I think after this upcoming season, Matthews is going to close that gap big time.

Draisaitl does not even deserve to be in this conversation. Sure, he is good. He sure is not elite like the others.
