It really hits home when someone like me returns to the city and sees what its like now. Company pulled out officially two years ago but still have some family in the area and in IN. It was sickening to literally see homeless in the airport. You hear things but don't really believe it til you see it. I mean the airport is obviously the first impression travelers get of a place. It boggles the mind that things have been allowed to fall so far.

Homeless in the airport? What? I fly quite a bit. What airport are you talking about?? I've flown a dozen times in the last few years, and have never seen "homeless in the airport"

And being well documented in the national media doesn't mean much either. I work in rail transportation. I had a bunch of people ask me what's going on in the industry with the rash of derailments being in the news.

Derailments are down year over year for the past few years. They happen almost every day. They became newsworthy because of a bad one in Ohio.

All this except the derailment stat is anecdotal, sure. But I really don't see anything all that different outside of opioids getting worse. I do see more people zooted in public and that sucks.

The encampment inside parts of airport and outside reached over 600 late in 2022

Most were removed in late Feb/March after several employees were harassed and threatened. Those employees brought it to local/national media attention after nothing was done. That is what eventually lead to removal of homeless

Help was offered and those who took it went to shelters/group homes while those who refused were removed from airport for trespassing

Mentioned this all the way back in May of last year, but my old man had been diagnosed with gastroesophageal cancer (it's cancer that's right at the junction between the stomach and esophagus). Really nasty cancer that has an ugly survival rate.

Well, after a long and grueling process that involved numerous surgeries and lots of chemo, we went to the oncologist today and a recent Pet Scan didn't show anything, nor did any blood work. 'Complete remission' is the wording the doctor used and we just have to be diligent with scans and such for the next few years in case it manages to return.

Feels good though. Really fortunate with it so far considering how dire this particular cancer can be.
That's amazing news!!!!

So, a problem that has already been addressed? Cool.

Still should never have been allowed to get to that point and only reason it was dealt with.

And it was certainty not a good look to people like the person talking about it when arriving and wouldn't have been tolerated under previous mayors especially when they started threatening workers

Yeah it seems like people are missing the point - that it was allowed to get to that point and basically let it get worse until they had to be forced to deal with it.

And in reality it was just one more thing on top of everything else.

It just feels like if you wanted to complain about the state of Chicago you'd bring up something that wasn't fixed fourteen months ago with an outgoing mayor.
What was fixed 14 months ago? The homeless thing? The article linked above is dated Feb 18. Or google "Chicago airport homeless" and you'll get a dozen or more hits from all the mid-February articles when Lightfoot finally was forced to address the situation when the national media got hold of the story. And I was there in December and saw it with my own eyes.

And like I said it's just one more black eye on top of everything else, the kids stomping on cars and the BS response to it being the latest.

Thought BWC said it was an issue in February of 2022. Haven't flown since Covid except for work and that was all out of Midway. I mean I opened with all of my opinions being anecdotal.

Lived in Manhattan since I came to college at 18. Moving to the burbs. Happy wife, happy life.

We’ve been struggling to decide where we want to live, stay in the city or head back to the burbs. That’ll be a huge change for you man. It’s the quiet that is getting me. Visiting my parents out in Aurora, night and day difference from living in the Gold Coast. You’re going to be spending a lot of time cooking at home that’s for sure.

Also, “Happy Wife, Happy Life”…what a terrible and stupid saying. So many men wasted their lives abiding by that. I hate that saying with a burning passion. No offense.

He's moving to the burbs, not North Dakota. I love Aurora, very cool city. About to make a move myself. Gonna be Aurora or NWI.

Meh, marriage requires compromise. Compatibility, but also compromise. Mrs. hawksrule wanted to move out of the city 20 years ago. With the youngest graduating high school and my firm deciding to go full-time remote indefinitely, it’s time.

I mean, not really. Are you single? Lol. It should be the goal of both people in the marriage to make their partner happy. It's the only way marriage works, actually.

We both work from home and I just need an airport. So we moved to AZ to get out of that weather. It is quiet except for the weird critters at night but the darkness, stars, peace sure are nice. But I grew up on a farm and miss that.

I think the controversy over the Blackhawks nickname and logo can be solved by shortening the nickname to just "Hawks" and changing the logo to the bird called hawk. It would be similar to how the Tri-Cities Blackhawks of the NBA rebranded as the Hawks upon moving to Milwaukee in 1951 (they later moved to St. Louis and are now based in Atlanta).

I'm sorry, what controversy?

Odd to bring this up out of nowhere.

If need be, the team will just change it back to Black Hawks. Not a biggie.

Logo is another story, but we'll cross that bridge when we get to it.
