Wait.....PPG is slowing down? LOL

The thing is people get worked up into such a tizzy over him. I don't think they realize how much of a hole this team would have without Matthews, even at his current state of production.....

Some folks are acting like it's no big deal replacing an asset like that, which is mind blowing

Well , we all know that he’s playing hurt.

The question is...does it require surgery and/or is it fixable in the offseason.
The Leafs have one of the best medical staffs in the world.

They have obviously evaluated the situation 1 million times over and came to the conclusion that resting vs playing would make very little difference in his recovery and have given him the green light.

Dubas is right. He is injured, having a down year, which will still end up being a good year for 95% of every NHL player.

Toughing out an injury to try and help your team win used to be admirable. Now Leaf fans want to jump down his throat and make up narratives that he doesn't care,, he wants to leave.

I don't get it

when you bend the team over and give it to them without lube, the idea of admirability became as ugly as his play.
Making the decision he made as a 20 year old?

I don't feel like rehashing whether or not it was fair market,, an overpay, etc.

I am curious to see how he handles this summer when they start renegotiating.

I feel for hockey players in a sense that it must suck to see NBA/NFL/MLB money thrown at garbage players, but then I remind myself that they still get paid an insane amount.

I’m willing to bet it needs surgery but they don’t want to lose a year of this core. There is only one season left with this group and maybe it’s something that can be done in the off-season who knows but he clearly isn’t himself.

Mathews is a great player but he doesn’t merit a raise. 11.5 million doesn’t sound like crapping all over him. He wants more it will only make things worse on this team. I think some team will offer more, hopefully not us that is why I think he moves on.

But I have read many posts validating your statement. I just wanted to clarify my position.

Hasn't AM34 scored in nearly the same amount of games as last year, he has just had less multi goal games? Thought i read that somewhere.

You are not going to hit 60 every year and given his injuries, I'm not concerned with his play. Just need to see a step up come playoff time and we should be good.

I think we can tread water without Matthews in the regular season to let him fully heal from whatever lingering injuries he's dealing with.

I want him at 100% going into the playoffs, and I don't think the status quo is the right way to do it.

The idea of a nagging injury that can be played through, requiring no rest, that doesn't get worse with repeated wear and tear is a mystery to me.

He popped off with a great game coming off his three week layoff and another great outing in Seattle but can't do the things he wants. Just doesn't feel right for him to grind at a low performance level. Maybe if the Leafs can create some separation with Tampa they could afford to rest him more.

Me too, just theorizing.

He could also just be out of sync

Whatever it is, it has clearly affected his play this season because he doesn’t look nearly as confident or capable with the puck

George Springer played the whole season with bone chips in his elbow.
