Making the decision he made as a 20 year old?

I don't feel like rehashing whether or not it was fair market,, an overpay, etc.

I am curious to see how he handles this summer when they start renegotiating.

I feel for hockey players in a sense that it must suck to see NBA/NFL/MLB money thrown at garbage players, but then I remind myself that they still get paid an insane amount.
They are all paupers, Ronaldo $250 million (Canadian dollars)… a SEASON.

Mathews is a great player but he doesn’t merit a raise. 11.5 million doesn’t sound like crapping all over him. He wants more it will only make things worse on this team. I think some team will offer more, hopefully not us that is why I think he moves on.

But I have read many posts validating your statement. I just wanted to clarify my position.
I think there will be a raise but I just don't see it at the 15 million like a minority are saying. I don't even think it should be at Mack's cap.

The nature of sports seems to always have the next guy sign for more but outside of Mack ans recently Pasta, no one has jumped Matthews or Tavares.

Even Pasta signed for less.

I love Matthews and Marner but if they both ask for north of 13 I will be disappointed

I posted a few weeks ago where no player in the history of the league has scored more goals in his 2nd 8 years than he did in his 1st 8. Unless Mathews becomes the 1st, his point production over the next 8 years will be less. Why pay more for less?

Now maybe his overall play improves, so there is that.

My only real concern with Matthews is how much injuries are going to affect or derail his career over the next 4 years. He doesn't play a full season and because he's the main focus of other teams, he gets their full attention with slashes to the hands and finishing checks against him.

Matthews' contract is going to start with a +1 year difference of Tavares' ticket still being on the cap. So you don't really worry about the money as much because Tavares won't be getting another 11mill per season when he re-ups. So whether he gets 12 or 12.5 is almost a non-event for me. I'd still prefer if he gets 10 or 11 and gets other players to play with him. But it almost doesn't seem realistic at this point.

Yes. I read that post and it's a good point.

The difference.... Mitchell Marner.
Yes and no.

When they first changed the lines it was Matthews/Nylander that caught fire while Marner was in the midst of his point streak.

Willy stayed hot, Matthews cooled then had two stints missing some games and them came back and played with Mitch.

I'm sure he helps but It's not THAT simple it can't be

Actually it is. Here's a breakdown:

Point 1 - LIterally tipped the puck before Marner circled the ice.

Point 3 - Sandin does a really good job of breaking up the rush up the ice in the neutral zone. Heads back the other way. Buntin and Marner start a very good passing play and Matthews finishes it off with a great pass from Marner.

Point 2 - Matthews passes back to Rielly. Rielly walks the line and passes to Marner. Marner scores.

Point 4 - Bunting gets in alone on a forecheck. Puck gets turned over and Marner stops the breakout. Passes the puck to Matthews and he bats it in.

I'm not saying that Matthews is irrelevant, but he is a huge benefactor of playing with Marner.

Edit: I put the 2nd and 3rd points out of order. I know. I don't know how to switch it. lol

The point still remains that all of Matthews points in the last 3 games have been directly impacted by Marner.

In order for you to believe it is THAT simple you would also have to believe that Auston Matthews is COMPLETELY useless without him and that's just not true.

You're missing the point I'm trying to make here. I just showed you 4 clips of how Marner changed the game and it directly benefited Matthews.

You don't score 60 goals and win MVP being useless. I get your point. But you can play with very good players that can also contribute to you scoring as well as being able to hold your own. Both of those things can be true.

Unless he starts sticking up for himself other players are going to continue hacking and whacking and injuring him.
time to man up and crack a few melons

Also, and maybe It's because I'm currently on my PS5, not my laptop but the video for point 1 doesn't play.

If you're not worried by now, you should be.

Just unacceptable effort levels recently. Watching him slog around the ice getting worked time & time again is a big problem.

It's good that he avoided a knee injury and came back to finish the game but he looked very sloppy out there. Mentally checked out, half hearted effort. Doesn't look like someone gearing up for the playoffs.

This is what he looks like every playoffs when the pressure starts to get to him and men on the other team bully him into playing poorly. Never terrible but nowhere near deserving of the prime ice time he consumes.

Guy is starting to seem like a southern USA sleazeball. When it gets tough he shies away and doesn't actually have his heart into somthing.

Just wants that money and cash.

Smiling when his teammates were sticking up for him.

He better grow a pair soon and prove this wrong. Hes almost a playoff ghost at this point.
Our f***ing luck i swear

I’m not
He’s milking it to a new big extension
He’s just fine
The leafs on the other hand very concerned yes!!!
If he’s not injured I’d seriously think twice before committing to what we’re seeing this season!!! Wow what a quick difference

Patrick laine syndrome?
