No I wouldn't expect him to.
Matthews may look to play out the whole season to up his value before signing.
For that reason I think Dubas opens the vault asap.

I agree they'll pay him.
To me he should slot in under Mackinnon but I don't really expect him to.
That is my hope too!

I was told in the previous Matthews contract discussions that goals are worth far more than points and playoffs aren't allowed to be considered part of the equation. Matthews has more goals than MacKinnon in 200 less games. Uh oh...

I was told on Marner vs Rantanen contract discussions that Marner pays 10% more taxes than Rantanen so his aav will be higher to account for that.

Also, it looks like the cap will be about 5 mil higher when Matthews new contract kicks in.

So goals are more valuable, and Matthews scores more, so 1 mil more than MacKiinnon. We're at 13.6 mil for Matthews. Plus 10% tax difference. We're at 14.9 mil. Plus the cap will be approximately 5% higher. So that brings Matthews contract to 15.3 million.

I was told in ALL the contract threads that Toronto's media circus and high profile demands a premium. Maybe 500k? So 15.8 mil.

I've simply applied all the things that I'VE LEARNED from the other contract discussion threads.

Maybe he'll take a discount at an even 15 mil.

The Leafs are traded him in June if he asks for 15 million.

Much better game last night. Needs to build off of that. Our team defense is good enough, I think they should tell him to put the focus on his offense to close out the year

My concern is he'll ask for those big bucks based on what he did in the past, not connected to this year's mediocrity. That would not be a good signing for the Leafs, and might lessen the return we'd get in a trade. I hope he says I'll extend for 2 - 3 years at $12.5 or so, and look to cash in big with a much higher cap in the future. These playoffs will dictate how this plays out.

At a point per game pace?
Allison put up points as well and do you actually watch him play ? Do you watch how little impact he has outside of being a net front presence and when he's not being carried by playing with Marner ?

and Hymans pacing for over 90pts by playing a similar type style but at a faster pace , should we ignore who's creating the majority of his opportunities and pretend he is also an elite player ?

anyway this a Mathews thread and hopefully if he's dealing with an injury he gets healthy for the playoffs

My concern is that he asks for as much as Marner is going to get:sarcasm:

yup , concerned with what's going on with Mathews's , more concerned with Tavares who looks like the crawling dead when Mitch isn't carrying him

Tavares is already on a soft landing with 2 years beyond this one. Just gotta glide that $11 million down onto the runway.

I think the idea would be extend Matthews in the summer or trade him. At the point what would you offer him?
The day after the season ends, if in a week he didn't seem amenable to signing a team friendly deal, then he'd be gone at the draft table.

Front of the jersey not the back

A shorter term deal with relative big bucks has some advantages. If he wants $12.5 million for 3x years and bet on the NHL salary cap exploding that takes us to 2027 and Matthews is 30. That gives this team 5x playoff runs with Matthews and would essentially be turning that initial 5x year extension into 8x years.

I like how you put that , lol , and hopefully we can find him a different runway to glide down in the offseason
