They should look at the Pastaman contract and Matthews should make less than that all things considered given the difference in performance

some times what you see is what you see.

low opinions or not.
Isn't what you see, always what you see?
He 100% looks checked out of Toronto. Looks like he is already mentally gone.

I don’t want him to leave, but have to call it how it looks.
There are a number of possible explanations, that seems like the least likely one to me. JMHO.

Been concerned with this teams core for some time... But Matthews the least. Still feel that way.

If you guys want to see players checking out. Watch the Nucks, but not when they play us, bc players tend to do the opposite when they play us. Lol

If he is checked out, he won't be leading the team in shots.
It really could just be his wrist or back or he is bored playing in the regular season

You very well might be right, but imo he just looks so uninterested? I dunno man? Missing the warm weather and moms cooking?

I'm almost curious to see what the "checked out" crowd will do with this, seems like a valid point to me.

He's not 60 in 54 bad even with depression/drugs/getting ready to leave/injuries or whatever else has been said here.

I'm just accepting this is his 2012 OV year. Everything that could go wrong has

He'll have a new slate come game 1. Hopefully he's ready fir it

I don’t care what Matthews does the rest of the season. All that matters is what he does in the playoffs. I’ve said he’s just having a down year but hope he brings his best playoff time!

Imagine if Auston has already made up his mind that he’s going to Arizona?… doesn’t care about money because he already has more than enough to last his whole family forever.

What if he wants to be THE guy who brings hockey to Arizona… and he doesn’t want to get hurt before he goes home.

I don’t know, this would be disastrous… however, if he’s checked out like some say, could he be wanting to go home?

They won't have a proper NHL arena at the earliest until 2026, and probably sometime 2027+ and their ownership cringed at the though of getting an ELC contract in return for Chychrun.

Even in the unlikely scenario he leaves Toronto, the chance of him going to Arizona are close to zero. They won't pay him close to what he wants and he'd be leaving a team with among the best off ice facilities to the team with literally the worst.

He also doesn't strike me as the sentimental type. He's a young guy at the start of his career afterall

I created a thread on this exact topic way back near the beginning of November. Sadly, nothing has changed since. Matthews looks like a shell of his former self. A complete ghost on most nights. Not sure if it's injury related or if he's just checked out of Toronto mentally, but he's definitely not worth anywhere near the 15 million he's rumoured to want.

Personally, I won't miss him if he's traded next season. Dude's never been a playoff performer or a big game player. His career totals in game 7s (including game 5 vs CBJ) say it all:

5GP 0G, 2A, -4

Total diva that's all about himself - a career loser.
Totally agree, the next GM should trade him this summer, retain half for the last year if you have to , to maximize the return. Matthews is the tin Man in wizard of oz, he has no heart

So Pastrnak just signed a team friendly deal with the Bruins for 8 years at $11.25 million per...what's Matthews team friendly deal? $14.5 million? How about Marner? $13 million. This Leafs team will never win anything if our top players are simply focused on bringing home the paycheck as the top priority.

Worth noting too, there's absolutely nothing tangible to Matthews asking for anything close to 14+ mil on his next deal.

There's an awful lot of doomerism going on in this thread, with folks just assuming the worst case scenario is a lock to happen.....

Matthews contract could potentially look different from Pasta in regards to both term and aav. But it's just idle speculation before we hear anything in terms of reporting on the negotiations

I contend that the mismanagement of Matthews has already happened now it's a process of making the best of it.
You know, it really raises questions how there isn’t an ethical obligation to take less for the sake of the team’s (obvious?) purpose which is to win the Cup.

Especially when the impediments to winning a Cup are best addressed when there’s more money to address it.

Pie in the sky perhaps, but to believe agents and players alike could get together and conclude, with millions made and millions more to be had, perhaps a Cup might be more lucrative in the long run than the instant grab now.

Especially in Toronto.

But because it’s Toronto…

They just don't have an ounce of rational thinking or common sense, my god.

How the fickle have now come out in DROVES just waiting for this.
You can't call me fickle, I am still pissed off at the way he bent Dubas over with the walk clean on out the door or pay me stupid amounts of money deal

I'd heard a month or two after the signing that there was somewhat of a promise made to JT to stay the highest paid Leaf until at least year 5. I've no offer of proof but he swore he heard it from his old agent. So there you go obviously somebody said so what, and someone else said yeah ok I'm cool with that.

But because it’s Toronto…

If Matthews signs for $14 million per with Toronto, and then Marner gets $12.5 million, you really wonder how serious of a contender this Leafs team will be when every other serious contending team could sign their star players for reasonable contracts, including Boston, which the last time I checked, ain't Florida with no state tax...that throws the argument about state tax out the window...greed is greed, that's really what it comes down to...and not to mention about all the endorsement money Matthews and Marner are getting playing in Toronto...the privileges are through the roof!

If these guys get another massive overpayment on their next contracts with the Leafs, we should just stop hoping this team will win anything...and if these guys think they could win by hogging so much of the cap room, they are as delusional as they are greedy. We should just stop watching.

Just to point out, this is just critiquing a player with incredibly high expectations and importance. He was absolute garbage last night, but he still shows up most nights and is a dominant force in this league. We’re lucky to have the guy, and I enjoy watching his rare skillset. It’s just the bar is a Cup and he’s the top paid player, he needs to be that, for us to get where we want. I expect him to come out strong tonight in Calgary.
They don't always tell the truth to the media. Yes he needs to be better, but he looks like he's labouring, he doesn't have the dash and slash like before.

Just watch him skate. He's not right.

Hope that’s the case, in a way. Looks okay tonight.
