WN is not a casualty, the Leafs are. WN is clearly a mercenary first and team player second. Trained well by papa. He lost one of his young Sweds this week. I expect he just leaves either as free agent or trade. $$$ first. How many teams did papa play for? 9?

Bingo! He's going to the highest bidder ...period.

Sandin + Nylander for Gus (UFA) and a late first! ;)

probably for nothing...unless we trade him next year.

hopefully he awakens before playoffs and goes on a playoff tear.

all of this would quickly be forgotten.
If mismanaging Auston Matthews actually happens, and it’s quickly forgotten, then the integrity of our fanbase is done.

So Pastrnak just signed a team friendly deal with the Bruins for 8 years at $11.25 million per...what's Matthews team friendly deal? $14.5 million? How about Marner? $13 million. This Leafs team will never win anything if our top players are simply focused on bringing home the paycheck as the top priority.

Was a couple years in a row actually where Ovie was way below his normal standard.

Is that the train you all are jumping on now?

Lol guy was a 60-goal 2-way force last season and all it takes is one down year for everyone to start shitting on him. What a fickle fanbase, my god.

They just don't have an ounce of rational thinking or common sense, my god.

How the fickle have now come out in DROVES just waiting for this.

A lot of talk today on Gameday and Overdrive about Matthews. That's the first time I've heard the media criticize his performance this year. Both shows agree that he's on pace for a fine season points-wise, but that something is clearly off; and if the Leafs are going to have any success in the playoffs he needs to be a lot better.

He won’t. He has checked out of Toronto.

Matthews has such an amazing shot, he can score 40 a year with little effort. That’s the problem. He plays with this non chalant attitude that he can turn it on whenever he wants.

Also Keefe’s comments should put to rest this nagging injury excuse, unless desire is an ailment.

Wohhhhhhh

First what did Keefe say?

Second, did he take it back yet? ;)

Just to point out, this is just critiquing a player with incredibly high expectations and importance. He was absolute garbage last night, but he still shows up most nights and is a dominant force in this league. We’re lucky to have the guy, and I enjoy watching his rare skillset. It’s just the bar is a Cup and he’s the top paid player, he needs to be that, for us to get where we want. I expect him to come out strong tonight in Calgary.

Perhaps AZ or LA. What do you think?

For those not paying attention, Arizona has more salary on LTIR than on their active roster. The franchise is an absolute joke and there's no indication that's going to change by the time Matthews contract is up.

So, no, even if he decides to walk from the Leafs he's not going to the desert. I'd bet a small fortune on it. LA more likely if they have cap space by then, and I can see Dallas in the mix. But my money is still by far on him re-signing in Toronto, even if they fold again this spring.

I don’t mind his performance for now.
It better pick up in the playoffs.

It also lowers his value.

the issues is that usually players don't flip a switch all of a sudden in a playoffs. They usually carry a momentum that they build in the season.

Very rarely you see (probably hardly ever) that a player just flips on the switch for the playoffs. Goalies are exception because they are freakin' voodoo

I contend that the mismanagement of Matthews has already happened now it's a process of making the best of it.

Imagine if Auston has already made up his mind that he’s going to Arizona?… doesn’t care about money because he already has more than enough to last his whole family forever.

What if he wants to be THE guy who brings hockey to Arizona… and he doesn’t want to get hurt before he goes home.

I don’t know, this would be disastrous… however, if he’s checked out like some say, could he be wanting to go home?

I really don't think so and I'd bet a lot that this isn't happening.

I really don't get the checked out part more like he just didn't have it this year. Which could happens.

Why would you want him in Toronto, at an increased price at that, if they fold again this spring?

I’ve said it before nothing more than he is getting now will be an overpayment.

He's hasn't checked out and I'm a little bit surprised that anyone could have a low enough opinion of him to even think such an insulting thought.
