Anyone else concerned about Matthews?

So your point is that nhl players are "different and unique" from each other. Fully agreed.

And the "difference" and "uniqueness" of the leafs core players that we are discussing are that they are MENTALLY WEAK AND FRAGILE!!!!!

If you're going to continue the argument of "But it's not their fault that they're mentally weak and fragile. People are different" then I'll counter with "Their flaws/weaknesses/fragilities aren't something we should just ignore and maybe we should shake things up and move on from some of the core".[/I]

Well we'd have to pay to dump them wouldn't we? What team in their right mind would trade for such DRAMATIC AND UNPRECEDENTED OVERPAYMENTS

Reactions: leafs in five
Also depends how that player played in the run to the Cup too.
IF Pasta was a leaf, he would be accused around here of choking in the regular season for 2 years and not making the playoffs, choking in 2 first rounds, choking in 4 conference finals, and choking in the stanley cup final.
He would be branded an overall loser and a reason to break up the core

They're all very player-friendly front-loaded contracts (which Dubas shockingly didn't use to lower aav) where poor teams could get these players for like 6-8 million in REAL money. Half the league cares more about real money than cap hits.

Well if he is part of the Core and still put up his numbers. I don’t think there will be a lot of criticism due to his current contract.

His new contract is fair, but if he is a Leafs, the expectation of his new deal will be like 12mil, which is overpaid.
Kind of like AM, I can see him getting 13mil but I just can’t see him getting 14or higher at this point.
Once again, if he leads the Leafs and win the Cup and Conn Smythe, that’s another story.

Absolutely I’m concerned. This guy goes to sleep in any tough game and feasts on weak teams. Matthews and bunting deserve to be on the third line.

Let's see how much he values having 88 around, because he'll be the likely casualty if Matthews goes for the huge payday.
I doubt that. Losing Willy would be a disaster. Take away one of Matthews, Marner or Nylander and who is left 3 years from now?

WN is not a casualty, the Leafs are. WN is clearly a mercenary first and team player second. Trained well by papa. He lost one of his young Sweds this week. I expect he just leaves either as free agent or trade. $$$ first. How many teams did papa play for? 9?

I don't disagree, but If Matthews demands an excessive amount, someone else has to take less.

Certainly a reasonable opinion. My point was if AM refuses to "give back", then the Leafs will likely not be able to play in the 88 bidding.

Reactions: 57 Years No Cup
Reminds me of Ovechkin in 2011. Ovi was the same age then as Matthews now and people were wondering if he was cooked. If I remember correctly Ovi was also playing through injuries and getting cortisone shots
Was a couple years in a row actually where Ovie was way below his normal standard.

He’s not getting more than MacKinnon IMO. And if he’s not willing to be reasonable you can just trade him anyways, Marner is by far the better player and more consistent player. He is the guy we should be looking to keep as a lifelong leaf.
Is that the train you all are jumping on now?

Lol guy was a 60-goal 2-way force last season and all it takes is one down year for everyone to start shitting on him. What a fickle fanbase, my god.
