Anyone else concerned about Matthews?

I absolutely love the Pasta deal, that should help with the comparable figure that Matthews should be asking for. I get AM plays a premium position, however Pasta has no nights/weeks off.

edit: This also helps prevent Marner from getting any ideas of starting with a $12/13M...$11-12M or take a lap.

It's nice that Matthews having a down year will probably round out to him scoring 40 goals, be above ppg, and solid defensively.

Now, if it becomes a trend and he looks the same next year, management may have to reevaluate what to offer for his next contract.

The thing is can you risk having him on the team next year without an extension? If he won’t sign this summer or his demands are outrageous Dubas should immediately find the best offer possible before his NMC kicks in. But it will be a problem getting a decent return.

Doesn't really matter how it happened if it's an injury or medical issue. More important:
-will it improve by the time the playoffs start?
-will he need off-season treatment? If so, when will he return?
-will it get better? If not, can he play through it until retirement or is it career threatening?
-is it even an injury or medical issue vs. ????
-is our franchise cursed? Can you feel the rumblings of Harold Ballard laughing under your boots when you walk downtown?

The contract to worry about is Nylander not M&M.

Nylander is the one who is most likely to want to wait until he is a UFA, the one who will ask for the biggest raise, and still overlaping Tavares.

I dunno, offensively he doesn't look the same. He's absolutely playing elite level defence, there's no question about it. My concern is his drop in production from when he does have the puck. He isn't flying in the O-zone and dominating with the puck as much as he did last year. There's a very noticeable drop off, I think he's playing through some sort of injury it's just strange. The way McDavid was flying all over the ice last night, controlling the puck, going through guys etc. that's the shit Matthews was doing last year.

Yes he's playing phenomenal off the puck and defensively but that shouldn't be taking away THAT much from his offence. He is making high percentage smart plays, rather than risking a turn over he'll make the safe play and throw pucks deep or into a corner but that shouldn't be diminishing his offensive output by this much. He doesn't look like he's shooting as much, his toe drag wrist shot is something we all got used too, I can't really remember him doing it all that much this year.

With Nylanders year, this could also hurt the leafs with his negotiations if he continues this into next season.

100%, though if the Leafs don't get out of the 1st round again I think you have to take a good hard look at the core. You've changed everything around them several times now, if they can't get it done this year I suspect big changes are in store...whether or not Dubas is in charge.

Matthews just needs to get his swagger back.
A bottle of Rogaine would go a long way to restoring that.

Kind of regret I started that but still miles better than saying he has a drugs problem like some others suggested.

I'd phone Winnipeg as see if a Nylander-Hellebuyck works. Nylander is 26 and Helle is 29. Both are going into the final year of a deal and in the 6m range. Leafs probably need to Woll though because it's a premium position and Nylander is a winger
