Matthews always has created on his own, but this season he has been injured and his play has suffered. People seem oblivious to the fact that last season he was scoring from distance making his own chances, but this season he has no strength or accuracy on his shot. That's physical, not mental.

People need to understand the difference between being healthy and hurt before they make any sort of claims.
I keep wondering why if this is true, they don't sit him out until he's healthy again?

They did IR him a couple weeks back. IMO I think we will hear that he was dealing with an injury he could play through without doing more damage, but it won't get better until the offseason - whether by rest/rehab, or surgery.

To me it's as simple as seeing him not being able to score from distance at all.....that is not a mental issue. It's a physical one. He's still pacing for 43 goals and 90 points when he's in the lineup this season without going on any heaters so far.

He's impacting the game positively more on the defensive side than ever before too.

It's a mystery. First game back IIRC he scored with a more "Matthews like" shot and I thought he's fine, apparently not. But I just don't get it, he's been off all season, even if it takes months to recover from surgery it still makes sense to get it over with right away (like October) and he should still be back way before the playoffs. Unless the decision has been made that selling tickets is more important than playoff success but even that doesn't compute considering tickets sell no matter what.

90 point pace is great, but that's not what were paying him an arm and a leg for. We need more than that from him, a lot more!

All the bet99 fedoras went to his head. But seriously he looks like he lost some of that blistering hand eye coordination response. Wondering if perhaps he got concussed at some point quietly.

There a few singular players who can come close to maximizing Mitch's playmaking value. Mathhews is one of them. Symbiosis is a sign of team's strength.

totally agree , unfortunately we gave him a deal that was equivalent and probably more than McD when you consider term
We did not give Matthews a contract equivalent to McDavid's contract (which is one of the best ever, for the record), even though their pre-signing periods weren't all that dissimilar.
Matthews is also not going to get as much as McDavid in UFA.

He’s obviously hurt. I assume it’s that crosscheck Benn laid on him way back when. Tonight especially he’s just giving us nothing out there.

I don't even think its physical hurt, he looks straight up depressed playing hockey.

Who hurt him

If he wants 15m/year then he had better start playing like that kind of player again

Because if next year he performs the same as he did this year then that 15m/year is no longer on the table
The way he's been playing, I wouldn't even give him $5 million nevermind $15 million.

He's obviously injured, but he's giving it all for his team.

Let's acknowledge that at least.

Both Mirtle and Jonas both said he was last Leafs Report pod

If Matthews is hurt why isn't he being rested at the very least.

It's a good question. But unfortunately load management just doesn't happen in hockey the same way. if the player refuses to go along with it I think you risk souring the relationship

He definitely looks damaged out there. Probably should shut him down for a while if there’s something very wrong.

He just isn't noticeable out there at all and he needs to be. It is absolutely a concern at this point whatever the reason he has been bad this season. It isn't good.

Def don’t notice him most games
But then again the seasons he’s been lights out he wasn’t good in playoffs

Hopefully this year it’s the reverse

It’s hard to imagine this current state of Matthews is the best tune up regimen for the playoffs.

If he’s hurt this kind of play is not doing anyone any good and only causing reputational damage.

Yeah, let him rest for the playoffs. Has not looked right all year. He's just so quiet again.
