Anyone else concerned about Matthews?

It could be as simple as going too far on pain, sleep or anxiety drugs. He could also have gotten concussed at some point. He just doesn't visibly appear right in the face, as the other poster said... Gaunt, dark, distant.

Glad to see people are starting to see this as something. None of us know, lots of reasonable speculation... I can't see him saying eff-it to the season... doesn't seem like a guy that would mail it in. Regardless of the actual reason, he's nowhere near his peak.

So fine, we all keep saying the season doesn't matter... but I will say this, if this is the Matthews that we get in the playoffs, I feel we have absolutely zero chance against Tampa, or any other team in the east. If he is not peak... kinda doesn't matter what the rest of the team is doing.

I wouldn't go that far though, look at how much worse Tampa's best players did than ours but they still won the series.

I just really hope there's a legitimate reason for this that gets fixed by the time the playoffs start but I'm getting ready to accept that that may not be the case and this is what we're getting.

Price? Rockstar and cowboy are completely different. Price has been a force and incredibly clutch. He doesn't fit your argument.
He also ended up in the players assistance program, so if the end result is the same it doesn't really matter if you want to call him a cowboy or a rockstar. I have a lot of friends in montreal who said that he was always a big partier... He still had a solid career but he took a big dive in his late 20's and was pretty mediocre outside of the one playoff run after that. That's what I mean by burning out too soon. That lifestyle takes its toll mentally and physically, and it can happen a lot quicker than it did with Price.

He's concerning

He's not even bad, he's just there which is worse imo

At least if he was trying things and sucking you could excuse his performance but he's a black hole, a void of nothingness, nothing productive is happening or even tried

I hope he's injured because if he's not he we have a serious problem

A guy making that much shouldn't need Marner stapled to him to drag him along and drive his line for him, he should be doing that **** himself

I created a thread on this exact topic way back near the beginning of November. Sadly, nothing has changed since. Matthews looks like a shell of his former self. A complete ghost on most nights. Not sure if it's injury related or if he's just checked out of Toronto mentally, but he's definitely not worth anywhere near the 15 million he's rumoured to want.

Personally, I won't miss him if he's traded next season. Dude's never been a playoff performer or a big game player. His career totals in game 7s (including game 5 vs CBJ) say it all:

5GP 0G, 2A, -4

Total diva that's all about himself - a career loser.

I don't know but whatever that is he was doing out there tonight looked absolutely brutal.

It's not like the dude was going to snipe 60 wristers every year but yea, I hope he's just chillin till playoffs cause he's dogshit right now at that caphit.

Wake up Auston let us love you

Well what else is it. He’s got Marner now. He’s got bunting. He isn’t injured, I’m not buying that excuse. So what else could it be? You don’t get unlucky for 53 games either so that’s not it

So it’s regression back to the meaLooks likn.

With the team? Or like personally?

Maybe both!

At least we're FINALLY at the acceptance phase that Matthews sucks this year. The first half of this thread is primarily people in denial and saying things like "He's fine. This is proven by the fact he's been blocking shots sometimes." (Can't make this stuff up... lol)

Keefe essentially called the core out yesterday post-game for not playing with "purpose or intelligence". Was that a dig mostly at Matthews? Because that's PRECISELY how I would describe Matthews play yesterday. And if so, would the coach really do that to a player if he knows he's playing through an injury?

No matter what, it's not good. If it IS a nagging injury that can't be fixed until the off season, then that is REALLY bad for an "all in" season. If he's just mentally checked out, that's even worse. Shows how mentally soft he is and that's a major problem for the playoffs. If he just wants out of town, that's the worst of all.

And the "saving it for the playoffs" is something I won't ever address. I've literally never heard of such a thing in over 30 years of being a hockey fan. It's something leaf fans have only very recently made up out of thin air when Matthews started sucking. Look at the big name superstars and the seasons they're having. None of THEM are (lol) "saving it for the playoffs". No fans of other teams are saying things like "Pasta... McDavid... Point... calm down. Save it for the playoffs." It's an INSANE thing to claim. I sometimes feel like a lot of people in leaf forum are bots designed to drive me crazy.

This post is spot on

Matthews is playing great defensively, scoring over a point per game and at a 40+ Goal pace, leading NHL forwards in blocked shots while probably dealing with a nagging injury.

Nice down year.

Matthews got slapped yday defensively.

f*** him being the forward with most blocked shots. That doesn't mean he can underperform that contract by a country mile and it's okay.

We need to call a spade a spade. He's been shit this year.

Have you seen the commercials he's in? Guys pulling a Lupul, PK, etc... larger than life, easy on the nostrils and all that. Thinking a little too much about the documentary he's gonna make with Bieber soon about their Hollywood lifestyles

Seeing this commercial during the game was hilarious.
