So 2 goals today. I guess it is back to he wants 15mil on his next contract instead of mentally checked out, doesn’t want to be here, injured……

Not gonna lie - despite the goals he really didn't look like himself still tonight. He lacks drive - Was more on marner than on him for getting those goals
If people think 2 goals = Matthews is back then they can keep living in a fantasy world.

He had two tap ins. Saw him attempt a toe drag wrister this game though so that's actually inspiring.

Yes, he has a full no movement clause that goes into effect on July 1 of this year. So, they could trade him before that without his permission or after that with his permission.
Correct, but the trade deadline is this week, is that lifted at some point before July 1st

You can trade a player anytime except during the Christmas holiday roster freeze.
You can make a trade any time you want after the deadline, they just can’t play for the NHL club they are traded to. We did it last year or the year before with Brendan Mennel.

I think it's all 4 of those things.

In comparison to his usual play and point pace, Matthews is mentally checked out, playing through an injury, doesn't want to be here, and thus will demand 15x8 in order to stay.

Who would have thunk it, one of the best passers in the world is put with one of the best shooters in the world and the shooter scores two. I'm for one absolutely surprised... who could have ever seen this coming?

Don't know if I would use the phrase checked out but he admitted recently that he was lacking a bit of confidence. Lack of confidence and "checked out" can look similar. His normal state is a bit demure to begin with so add in super low key and lacks confidence... kinda explains his body language.

The guy who doesn’t want to be here and is checked out is #1 in blocks for forwards

He hates being here so much he’s willing to sacrifice his body every game for the team. Makes sense

So our potential 15 million dollar guy has to have our 11 million dollar guy on his wing to be able to produce at an elite level?

Both he and Marner play differently when they are on the ice together. Matthews drives to open spaces way harder with more purpose and Marner puts the puck to said open spaces with more purpose and confidence. It was something to see.

I enjoyed watching them together last night. There was a major wow factor.

Maybe this is the way it's gotta be. 16 & 34 playing together and generating the bulk of the offence.
Rest of the lines just focus on a steady game and shut down their matchups.

Worked for the '92 Leafs! ;)

looks like it which is no different than the elite franchise superstar center we signed as a ufa and i was told is a huge discount at 11m needing Marner to make his stat look respectable

we need to clone Mitch and hopefully Willie doesn't start playing at half speed to Johnny can keep up

Despite the salary structure, I expect more offensively from Matthews with or without Mitch. I think Tavares has come in here and produced at the same pace he has for his whole career. No concerns there for me.

Matthews will be looking for 15 million bills next year... that cannot be reliant on him playing with a specific winger.

i agree since Mathews is much better than JT , the problem is if people believe JT is worth 11m then AM is easily worth 15m

Mathews is a shooter but he's not a player like McD who can generate endless opportunities for himself , he's more like Hull was in the sense he finds open space and waits for the puck .

another issue is after AM gets his raise Mitch will want the same and i can't say i would blame him

The fact that Matthews cannot create on his own like McD means he should not come in at the same cost. Noted, McD is almost a unicorn in that sense...

Matthews always has created on his own, but this season he has been injured and his play has suffered. People seem oblivious to the fact that last season he was scoring from distance making his own chances, but this season he has no strength or accuracy on his shot. That's physical, not mental.

People need to understand the difference between being healthy and hurt before they make any sort of claims.

totally agree , unfortunately we gave him a deal that was equivalent and probably more than McD when you consider term
