Canes fan here:

I am half tempted to go back to the trade thread and watch half of you say he sucks based on the first 4 games. All I can say is:

I told you he was good. He is going to cost aorund 6m - 6.5m this off season.
There were a ton of knee jerk reactions for sure. I would love to sign him long term since he's exactly what we need back there. We have too many pylons so it's awesome watching Sekera skate as effortlessly as he does.

If he gets 6-6.5 million, he's going somewhere else to be their #1 defenseman. If he signs here, it'll be a gabby-type deal on the low end or 5.5 on the high with someone else leaving...and believe me, I'm someone that wants him more than most do.

A few oddballs called him Suckera. All the logical members on here knew it would take a while for him to fit in. And right when he started fitting he got injured.

And now with Voynov's trial being delayed again to after free agency. Add in the fact Voynov is injured and probably long term. Look at Kobe with that injury. We're going to be forced to sign him and hope we get the term and dollars that will work.

Part of the appeal of Sekera is he is versatile, being able to play both sides on defense.

What separates him from Richards and Brown is he doesn't play the same style which can lead to wear and tear.

I really don't think Lombardi would have paid the price he did if it was just to get Sekera for a handful of games. To me, the intention was to commit to him long term all along.

I think that was the intent too, but that intent doesn't come with a blank cheque. DL has a limit to which he'll pay for Sekera who, while he is a good defenseman for sure, he is an added luxury to what is a solid blueline already, especially if Voynov comes back next season.

Half said that? Please...

Thanks for coming to another board to post an I told you so.

Well, at this point, I don't think there's a way the Kings don't re-sign him. Regardless of innocence or guilt, Voynov is out long-term. Jon Rosen confirms he tore his Achilles and had surgery to repair it last week.

Is it though? Team defense has been most of our problem this year. Granted, that's been on the forwards as much as anyone, and the defensive chemistry has been an issue more than the personnel.

I'm not sure WHO is our 2nd pairing PMD if Sekera is gone and Voynov is out, Martinez is good but then who is he with, McNabb? And do we bring in Forbort with Greene? It's just a shambles without Sekera who would be, quite literally, a top-3 #2 defenseman in the league.

But I agree on the blank check as well as...

I'm not going to say it's too much for him but it is more than we can pay him safely.

...this.

Not sure quite what it will look like but I expect some DL magic when it comes to Sekera getting good minutes on a top team on the beach w/one of his best friends/countrymen. Crossing fingers!

If he can be resigned at 5.5, the Kings would do it. But I don't think they would anything north of 6. And I can see him getting an offer of 7 if he does reach FA.

While Voynov is now out likely until November due to injury, I think DL has to assume he's here long-term until it's found otherwise (IE a guilty verdict and he's extradited).

So that leaves us with a D of likely:

Doughty-Muzzin
McNabb-Voynov
A-Mart-Greene
Forbort

You can mix the pairings how you want, but that's the likely top 7. Maybe someone else for Forbort if LA wants him playing big minutes in the AHL rather than being a spare part in LA.

Putting Sekera into that group is definitely a luxury. If it's at $5.5 million, it's just silly.

We have several forwards needing new deals or needing to be replaced if they leave as UFA's and odds are likely we'll need to eat some cap space just to get rid of Richards, so increasing the budget on our backend doesn't make much sense. I also don't think the D has played bad at all, I put a lot of it on the forwards. McNabb has struggled, but that was expected. He seems a lot like Muzzin to me and we all remember how much he struggled in 2013. It's part of the process. We do however need a bit more footspeed in our forward group, especially at centre on our bottom two lines. I'd rather sink $3 million into an Andrew Cogliano-type than $5 million into Sekera.

Well, Voynov's injury lowers his trade value. Pearson's injury probably lowered his RFA value a little. So, depending on how bad Sekera's injury is, it could possibly lower his asking price a little, right? I doubt it'd be much, if anything, but just trying to find some kind of long term positives for the team in this situation. This season is so ****ed up.

The main problem as I see it is they may have to decide on Sekera before they know the out come of the Voynov trial. To sign Sekera they probably need to do it before he is free to talk to other teams and his price goes to high. Without Sekera and Voynov the defense group is kind of weak unless McNabb makes a huge leap forward. The Kings are in salary cap hell and this is just one of the hard decisions that need be made if the Kings are going to be a playoff contender.

I only want to add when considering next years D we have to do something with Forbort or we will lose him for nothing. I see him as part of our roster opening night next year or part of a package to make another move.

I think it has been stated somewhere that Forbort is still immune to waivers next year, at least to start the year.

I thought that ran out this season? I hope that he is immune to start the season and that would make sense but I still wonder what the team wants from him or if having the right to send him down would could be a big step backwards for his career with the team. Last I remember is that they love the kid and think he is right there at being ready to play in the NHL. Still anything can happen and if he isn't our best option when the time comes then so be it.

I wish Sekera only played on the left side. I'm convinced he's much more comfortable there. So, signing him, I'm not against, but the plan should be to have him play the left side, where I think he will shine. He uses the back side of his stick well to catch pucks and make backhand passes, and this is what gets him through playing the right side. That's not a knock, thats a compliment!! But, playing the off side is not easy in the NHL. I would argue that the Rangers and Devils forecheck was non existent the other night, and rather easy. The Isles brought more in the second and third, but couldn't beat Jon. I don't believe Sekera will be the one to panic in a blitz against a Sekera--RR pairing, but once hell breaks lose, he's somewhat lost on his off side sorting confusion out. If we sign him,I hope it's with the idea of playing him with DD. I think they would be awesome together. But if we are going to pay huge bucks for him to play the right side, I think it would be a huge mistake. I just don't see it. IMO. GKG!!

I would love to see a Sekera-Doughty pairing. That would be unreal. Glad to see you guys are liking Sekera, I hated seeing him leave but I expected it. Hoping he is back quickly for you guys

Not happening, Kings cannot afford to put 2 puck movers together like that (except in specialized situations).

If by specialized situations you mean the powerplay, I disagree. Doughty needs to warm the bench on the powerplay.
