I asked the question in another thread:

Can you think of a GM that's been able to pick up a player at consecutive trade deadlines that made an immediate or long term positive impact the way Lombardi has in this stretch?

2015 Sekera
2014 Gaborik
2013 Regher
2012 Carter
2011 ... lol even if we don't want to count Penner it's still a remarkable run.

I really wanted the Canes to re-sign Sekera as he's been one of the better Canes defensemen in a long time, but I knew (and stated many times on the Canes board early in the season) that it was unlikely. He wasn't drafted/developed by Carolina so didn't have any real ties there and he was only there for a couple seasons. He's in the prime of his career, playing his best hockey and barely tasted playoff hockey.

The Canes aren't going to be competitive for a few years, so even if they offered him max dollars/term, I doubted he would re-sign. Don't blame the guy, I'd have done the same. I hope he re-signs in LA because I like the Kings. If he does, that is such a fantastic defense you guys have. I still like the trade for both teams though. Canes knew they couldn't re-sign him and got a decent return. LA gets a very good player for their playoff run with a chance to re-sign him and don't give up much that will impact the short term.

whats really crazy is that I just saw hes only 28! I thought (excuse my judgemental ways) he was in his 30's based on his bald head

This guy is ****ING MONEY.

****ING MONEY.

Who isn't on the Sekera train anymore? Sure don't see those "Suckera" posts for sure...my God, is this guy the real deal.

The only issue I have is that Carolina didn't move him through CBJ first...you know, for karma's sake.

I'm on the train. I'm not on the $5.5 million per season train.

You don't have to be modest, you got more than a decent return. :).

So it does take two to three weeks to adjust: Team/Home/Team mates/ System/ Pace of play. Like most of us said it would.

Hmm who would thought.

I know his scouting report said he's played both sides but in sure that along with being paired with another lefty had an impact as well.

The proof of his level of his play is when Sutter calls him the best player on the ice one game and a week or two later is confident to rest Doughty a bit on a back to back and rely on Sekera. when has he done that with any other defenseman in that little of time?

The only questionable aspects I can think of with regard to the Sekera trade are the reality that if we can't resign Sekera at a reasonable price and we don't win the SC this year, then it was a mistake to give up a prospect and a draft pick for a rental. I'm sure DL knows that though and I'm confident he can resign Sekera at a reasonable price.

Sekera's been nothing short of a great addition. I love his hockey IQ under pressure. We haven't had him that long, but it's apparent. We have several defensemen who make boneheaded plays a little too often but Sekera just seems so cool with and without the puck and has such good vision. Have to agree with Buddy the Elf, if it came down to a choice between Sekera and Voynov, I'd rather we keep lucky #7.

I wish Sekera only played on the left side. I'm convinced he's much more comfortable there. So, signing him, I'm not against, but the plan should be to have him play the left side, where I think he will shine. He uses the back side of his stick well to catch pucks and make backhand passes, and this is what gets him through playing the right side. That's not a knock, thats a compliment!! But, playing the off side is not easy in the NHL. I would argue that the Rangers and Devils forecheck was non existent the other night, and rather easy. The Isles brought more in the second and third, but couldn't beat Jon. I don't believe Sekera will be the one to panic in a blitz against a Sekera--RR pairing, but once hell breaks lose, he's somewhat lost on his off side sorting confusion out. If we sign him,I hope it's with the idea of playing him with DD. I think they would be awesome together. But if we are going to pay huge bucks for him to play the right side, I think it would be a huge mistake. I just don't see it. IMO. GKG!!

I agree with Seksy on the left side. A 7-8 D pairing could be absolutely lethal for many years. He should be where he performs best. He's in his prime...don't make him learn a different position.

 Don't get me wrong, I'm happy with the return given the circumstances, but I'd much rather have Sekera locked up for 5 years than a prospect and a late 1st round pick.

I said he was the best rental player available at the deadline. Good thing you guys didn't fall for that "fools gold" Franson.

Happy to see him fitting in well and getting the recognition he deserves. I hope to get to see more of him in the playoffs.

That's poor logic. We gave up a lot to get him so we should give up a lot of cap space to keep him?

I think the logic is he's easily our second best defenseman, capable of playing big minutes in all situations and is only 28. You keep your best if you can. Move someone else if need be.

So in 14 games he's "Easily" better than Muzzin (and Voynov if he returns) and we should just give him a blank cheque?

Come on Brad, you know its not that simple. Really guys? :shakehead

Well it obviously requires some roster massaging, it's not just 'sign him' and sit around happily. I'll take a stab at what that looks like after the game :P

but fwiw I'm not suggesting we just jettison people just because.

After watching all of the 4 games of this 5 road games trip and seeing how Sekera has come to fit in with the team, I've come to the following: "Slava who?"!
