Who knows? Maybe he even does better mentally in a platoon when he doesn't feel the pressure of carrying the full load. Why not try it? Coddling him and giving him unquestioned support doesn't seem to be helping him any.

Worth a shot.

I sort of don't care what he does. If Campbell can tap into that unrealized first round pedigree and start building a case for himself, we can ween ourselves of Andersen and backfill with a goalie around the expansion draft chaos. Just up Campbell's play time as he can handle it. Next year we roll with a young-ish platoon goalie approach with Campbell and Georgiev/Korpisalo and see how it evolves.

Im indifferent on keeping andersen. Hes been great at times, hes been bad at times. But what goalies are FA this summer?

Edit... just looked. Only tuukka rask. Who they stand no chance of getting. Their only option is freddy or go with jack cambell and use the extra space to sign another dman like dougie hamilton.
There are other options. Ranta being one.

I'm terrified everytime a team crosses the Blueline. I'm sure the team is the same and truthfully I'm sure Fred is right now too.

Without a doubt.

If you noticed, the Sens basically scored all their goals within 10 seconds of entering our zone last night. Point is, every time a team crosses the blueline with control i literally almost expect the puck to go in the back of our net.

Its clear to me now that Fred is done and gone and we have to move on. He's not getting it back. We need to really think ahout how we are going to trot him/campbell out this season and truly begin the process of finding out who will be starting for us next season.

Arizona is fairly cheap and rebuilding.

Maybe trading for Keumper? 1 yr at $4M. Perhaps he and Campbell could work as a 1A/B.

Maybe trade tor Georgiev?

If Sorokin pans out on the Island, maybe Varlamov?

There will be some options outside UFA

Average to below average over the last 2 calendar years, but it gets way worse over the last year.

Since January 1st 2020 he's sporting a .894 sv%, good for 48th in the league (out of 54) for goalies with more than 10 games. Also a 3.32GAA

I know it's been a weird last 12 months but he's been one of the worst goalies in the league since his last streatch of strong play ended in December 2019.

Thing too is, its seemingly mental. Hes clearly pretty athletic.

After the 2nd or 3rd Sens goal last night, when the camera panned to him and he looked absolutely shaken up. And I get thats just a split second camera shot, but he's looked shaken before.

I'm really hoping Campbell proves he's a hidden gem and Leafs can run a 1a/b tandem

When Freddy is on he reads the play so well, add on the size and athleticism and he just shuts down scoring chances. It's been a long time since we've seen that goalie.

When he's off you can see it immediately. Rather than anticipating the play he seems to be completely guessing. This leads to the scrambly play and the shots beating him so cleanly.

You often hear the commentators talk about him having 'no chance' or 'perfect shot' when in reality he completely guessed on a shot blocker side then the shot beats him clean high glove. Had he read it, or even just held his ground and reacted, the shot would have hit him in the chest.

I would put Andersen as a A- goalie with B+ reflexes that wins games with A+ positioning. He's the type who will always have better numbers then highlight reel saves. In my opinion, a goalie like Grant Fuhr or Dominik Hasek are better suited for teams with high offense and no defense, where someone like Andersen would be amazing on a very structured team. One of the reasons I think Andersen has such lousy starts is he's too structured and tight for a team that is not. When Freddy loosens up, his goaltending suits the Leafs more and he's at the top of his game. As a coach, I would try my best to get Freddy free flowing, relaxed, etc. I'd room him with someone who's fun, laid-back, etc. I'd joke with him. I'd try to get him to do Hasek-type practices in. And would definitely use a capable back-up to take the weight off his shoulders. And some how, this team needs to learn how to play against teams that go into a shell and how to play that same way themselves. Overall, not excited with the prospect of trying to replace Andersen with the options that are out there.

The team needs to go in a different direction.

They cant saddle themself to a Freddy extension
Ive already said im indifderent. Its hard to answer until you know what the options are. And as ive said, one option is going with canpbell and a rookie and using the cap space to sign another top dman.

Campbell is pretty much a rookie himself lol. it'll be interesting how it shakes out but the leafs need to improve on D.

I think his positioning is a weakness tbh.

What Freddy has going for him is that he's huge and he's athletic. Positioning and technique have always been sloppy.

And he might be losing some of his athleticism in his 30s.

If dougie hamilton or simular becomes an option id be willing to roll the dice on one of the young goalies at 1m with that defense. Rielly, brodie, muzzin, hamilton or similar, sandin, dermott, holl, Liljegren.... if it means we have to take a chance on a young tendie ill try it.

His sloppy fundamentals are the big reason for his erratic play and weak goals in key times.

If he was better positionally, he'd be able to avoid some of the significant dips we see each year.

Sometimes a change is needed for both parties. This is coming from a big Andersen fan who wears his jersey at least once a weak lol. It’s just not fair to him or us to keep going. He’s checked out and it’s obvious

I posted this in the GDT, but it pretty much tells the story with Freddy right now.

There is no way we can or should be committing to him right now.

I disagree. He is soft and always gives up multiple garbage house league goals every game. Never fails.

Like I said, you must be a new fan. The only knock on him up until last year was his playoff performances. He was known for literally stealing most of our wins enroute to those PO seasons. We definitely don't make the playoffs at all without him those years. He had Vezina consideration at least once.

i think he meant in the playoffs where Freddy is a notorious choker. Every time it comes down to him, he blows it. Absolutely incapable of making big saves when they matter most

He meant, yet that's not what he said? Was just responding to what the poster said. He then disagreed with my reply, hence he did not mean just in the playoffs.
