I think there has to be a fine line with Freddy this year. We are all aware of the slow starts, but with almost 30 less games this year, we don't have the same runway to be patient with his "October struggles" and give him the benefit of the doubt that he's going to turn things around.

He's still a good starting goaltender in this league, not a great one. He doesn't have the ability to steal games and it makes it increasingly difficult to justify paying him based on starting goaltender contracts around the league. I think at minimum, they're looking at a Braden Holtby contract of $4.1 mill per season.

I'm not a goalie expert by any means but doesnt it look like Fred consistently lose's control of his crease and starts flopping/swimming around?

So many side open net goals where he's out of position and doesnt step up when we need him the most and many times actually does the oppposite.

Leading the league in five hole goals allowed also isnt very inspiring.

He's a good goalie but far too inconsistent and mentally looks shook when things start to go south.
Yeshhhhh it’s out of character. He is losing his angles and flopping all over the place. His game is loud and reactive. It’s completely different than he the big goalie very technical, methodical game he plays. He’s out to lunch right now.
Time to warm up the “Soup”and have a seat freddy ha

But it won't really matter - we won't be in a championship contending position until the 5 skaters in front of the goalie learn a defensive system that isn't mostly comprised of immediate panic.

Ask yourself honestly: when was the last time you said to yourself "Wow, Freddy really stole that one for us." Now ask yourself how often you've said "We were the better team but we ran into a hot goaltender."

Goalies are supposed to step up and win a game once in awhile. Fred really doesn't do this. He'll never be the kind of goalie that will steal a series for us.
This is right on. Andersen does not steal games. I also find that he does not take accountability for his sub-par play. He is always pointing the finger and blame on everyone else.

He is not a #1 goalie.

The decision is becoming clearer every day.

Yes, our defense has holes. But its the goalies job to cover those holes. Hes failing at that job. If he makes a couple more saves we gloss over the D mistakes. You cant shrug shoulders every time a goal goes in off a defensive breakdown. You need your goalie to make a certain percentage of those saves. Hes not making them.

If you'd told me that was James Reimer swimming around last night, Id believe you. He seems to lose track of his net very easily these days.

Honestly, I could see us going into next season with a combo of Campbell and a re-signed Dell.
FA with a sv% of .839

that is beyond pathetic

Sure.. its great if he comes up with the big saves...but this is not all on Freddie...too many players playing for themselves and their stats...no one wants to leak blood for the other guy.

Andersen has always had a reputation as a slow starter to new seasons.

Last season Andersen didn't surrender 9 goals against until midway through game #4 and this year its 9 GA after 2 already.

In a contract season for himself this is not the start he nor the Leafs were expecting.

Perhaps no exhibition games is the reason for the early rust.

Goalies are supposed to step up and win a game once in awhile. Fred really doesn't do this. He's been very solid at times, junk like last night on occasion and that's about all there is to him. He'll never be the kind of goalie that will steal a series for us.

Yup. Regardless of any other issues on the roster, it's pretty much the definition of insanity to expect anything but disappointment if we go into the playoffs again with Andersen as the starter.

Anderson does not steal games? Did you just become a Leafs fan last year? Anderson is literally the only reason our young players have any playoff experience at all.

You have to wonder with a short camp, no exhibition games, and his notorious slow starts to the season that he might be getting into his own head trying to round into form quickly since this is only a 56-game season.

That harmless shot he let beat him on the short side that fortunately hit the post just before the 2nd period collapse was terrible and also starting to happen a lot . He doesn't seem to have any idea where the net is, he is now swimming around like Reimer, he takes forever to get back in the crease and position and for a big goalie he makes himself as small as possible. I can't see any reason to re-sign him but I'm sure he'll want to play in every game this season. Leafs need to move on and see what they have in his backups before it's too late

I go back and forth on him. On one hand, we have games where we give up 6 breakaways like the Montreal game. And on the other hand, Freddy surrenders extremely soft and untimely goals on a regular basis dating back to sometime last year.

Honestly I think it's a combination of both. Freddy should go get a fresh start somewhere else, his game is devolving here in Toronto and he's hurting the team.

It's funny that the quiz unanimously selected Andersen to return next season and the fans unanimously want him gone next season, or sooner.

I just can't see the logic of re-signing what will be a 32 year old goaltender in decline.

Lack of a better option on the market is all that I can think of.

Freddy needs to go. He was a mediocre starter when we got him, he's been complete garbage since the beginning of last year. He's not a starting goalie anymore. If this team is serious about contending, we should make a move for a goalie before the deadline.

For whatever it's worth, I saw OTT try to shoot short side on him last night. He didn't let in anything...small victories i guess.

;)

When goalies manage to make themselves look smaller in the net, it's a dead giveaway they've lost all confidence. This has been Andersen for quite some time.
