I also wouldn't discount the possibility that the team as a whole may play better in front of a different goalie. I think there's a real chance that this group has lost confidence in Fred (like so many of us) and would look stronger in front of a more capable tender.

I certainly haven't been a fan ofnhis performance in both games. But hes historically been a slow starter during the regular season, and in this case didn't even get any preseason games.

So he deserves a bit of time to get going before folks harp in him too much. That said, I hope to see Campbell get some starts soon

Goaltenders and cheap depth for forward/Defence. From next year on out the leafs should become a platoon goaltending team

I don't have an issue with a platoon system, but can't you just see the media whipping up some fake goaltending controversy if they were to do that?

Dubie tried to trade him this summer folks there were no takers ... Freddy is dead to us now and you can see it in his desire and lack of passion ... get what you can from one of teams who needs a goalie and do it before there is nothing left to trade at all

The lameduck situstion with Amdersen and his contract is an interesting angle.

I've been hoping that he will be extra hungry this season to try and earn a big payday in free agency. Though hopefully it hadnt soured things too much with the team

Im indifferent on keeping andersen. Hes been great at times, hes been bad at times. But what goalies are FA this summer?

Edit... just looked. Only tuukka rask. Who they stand no chance of getting. Their only option is freddy or go with jack cambell and use the extra space to sign another dman like dougie hamilton.

Anderson does not steal games? Did you just become a Leafs fan last year? Anderson is literally the only reason our young players have any playoff experience at all.

i think he meant in the playoffs where Freddy is a notorious choker. Every time it comes down to him, he blows it. Absolutely incapable of making big saves when they matter most

I don't know all da details but Dubie felt he was not gettin a decent offer for Freddy this I have heard from a couple friends who are closer to team than me now ... I think Dubie was honest with freddy but some guys take it as motivation and some guys just fade away ... you would think Freddy would fight harder but he may feel like he is done with hockey too ... who knows????

I was surprised to see Andersen is 31. He may retire soon. The guy has just seen too much rubber and there is no way he gets a raise from us.

Let Freddy walk.
Trade Marner for

Top Goalie + Midlevel D guy better than Holl + skilled Hyman type player, and a player like Matt Tchacuk.

We will still have some change leftover cause Marner is priced like a Hermes bag

The decision is becoming clearer every day.

Yes, our defense has holes. But its the goalies job to cover those holes. Hes failing at that job. If he makes a couple more saves we gloss over the D mistakes. You cant shrug shoulders every time a goal goes in off a defensive breakdown. You need your goalie to make a certain percentage of those saves. Hes not making them.

If you'd told me that was James Reimer swimming around last night, Id believe you. He seems to lose track of his net very easily these days.

Honestly, I could see us going into next season with a combo of Campbell and a re-signed Dell.

He completely underplayed a nothing shot from the boards that hit the post when it was 1-1 and then proceeded to overplay everything until he'd given up five.

D isn't great, but I'm tired of people blaming them.

Ottawa was dominated through 30 minutes and had plenty of breakdowns that didn't wind up in the back of their net because their goalie was steady and in position.

It's not easy to play relaxed when you know every mistake is going in your net because your goalie is all over the map mentally.

He literally took the air right out of the team when he started swimming half way through the 2nd.

If Campbell can show something, there is no decision with Freddy Andersen. He's gone. The polite talking points about him are "he's a good goalie but..." But nothing. He's a mentally weak basket case who amplifies the teams weaknesses and collapses in the biggest moments.

Exactly this. Ignore the actual pucks that are going past him and he's still extremely questionable right now.

He's off his angles, misreading situations and unsure of himself. The Paul post, the Tkachuk kick scramble, etc...

I'm terrified everytime a team crosses the Blueline. I'm sure the team is the same and truthfully I'm sure Fred is right now too.

This is 100% correct. He is very weak mentally. Cannot handle important moments. It's becoming an expectation that consistently in low times, its a guarantee he lets in atleast 4 or more goals per game. I'm pretty much expecting it the next game he plays regardless of the team.

Don't even care about getting rid of him.

He's good enough to compete for starts.

But this unquestioned handing him full time extreme #1 starter duty has to stop. He's been a subpar starter for over 2 calenda years now. .907sv% over his last 91 starts dating back to December 2018.

Make him earn his starts like every other goalie. No reason not to give Campbell every bit as much a chance to earn starts

Waivers come in to play whenever anyone goes up or down from the taxi squad (a stupid decision by the league).
A team can have 3 goalies on the playing roster. If a team chooses that route they wont have to worry about putting a guy on waivers to go up and down from the taxi squad. Only downfall is 1 less skater on the roster.

I only know this because I had the same questions regarding the Jets goalie situation. They just picked up Anton Forsberg on waivers yesterday so they could send Berdin back to the Moose to get some playing time. If the Jets were to send Forsberg to the taxi squad he would have to go back through waivers and would most likely get picked by another team in the same situation.

But the fact that he can't even handle a Game 2 regular season start on the road in an empty building vs the 30th place team from last season just shows you he has a very low floor in terms of what you could expect from him on any given night. Add to the fact that the rest of the team has a questionable game in and game out approach, it's a recipe for disaster.

His contract will probably just run its course, so no need for immediate action, but what a bust.

Who knows? Maybe he even does better mentally in a platoon when he doesn't feel the pressure of carrying the full load. Why not try it? Coddling him and giving him unquestioned support doesn't seem to be helping him any.

Worth a shot.

Average to below average over the last 2 calendar years, but it gets way worse over the last year.

Since January 1st 2020 he's sporting a .894 sv%, good for 48th in the league (out of 54) for goalies with more than 10 games. Also a 3.32GAA

I know it's been a weird last 12 months but he's been one of the worst goalies in the league since his last streatch of strong play ended in December 2019.
