The agent is the one factoring it in. Smart to mitigate the financial loss for your client on the chance there might be a lockout or strike. The GM would be more concerned about the cap hit then the year by year breakdown of salary out the door.

I get that.

It's just a sad sign that there is that little faith of a CBA getting done without the need of another lockout. It's sad that even needs to be accounted for. Shouldn't be that way, IMO.

Plan for the worst. Hope for the best.

So I could see Stoner now getting moved to Nashville, Ottawa or New Jersey with some incentives for the other teams. He is an effective third pairing D on a non-contender and both New Jersey and Nashville could certainly use his size and toughness. I think this is the best path forward for Anaheim along with a buyout of Bieksa this summer.

Actually I think these CBA year provisions in contracts are going to end up doing more to prevent a lockout rather than anticipating one.

The leverage the owners have to lockout comes from the fact that the players lose money. If the players aren't losing money because they got it all in signing bonuses or weren't making much money that year anyways due to contract structure, then the players don't need to be as desperate to settle and the owners don't have as much leverage in a lockout. These contracts are just the players and agents way of saying that a lockout isn't going to work next time.

For all the holdout and time missed this seems to be the standard contract all the other RFA guys have been signing?

I'd label him a potential #1. I don't think he's established himself as a consistent, proven #1 yet. Top pairing, definitely.

For me depends on the definition as the term #1 its always up for interpretation. I like to think of it as being more of a top-10 D than simply being a #1 on any old team (i.e. top 30). In which case I have him on the outside looking in for now...

The way some people use the term #1 though, he would be.

True. I'm basing it on my own personal definition, which isn't the top 30 one.

Great team friendly deal, Ducks fans should be quite happy. Though his next contract is going to be incredibly pricey.

He better pray to the hockey gods though that Carlyle decides to retire soon or else he's going to be in for a very rough few years

Lower salary in the first year helps both the Ducks and Lindholm. The prorated amount Lindholm lost for the first 8 games will be lower.

I wonder how Buffalo feels about the Ristolainen contract now?

CapFriendly Twitter now confirms Thompson was placed on LTIR yesterday.

Carlyle has been fine.

For ****'s sake, the team is missing two of their best players, and they have been very competitive to start the season. What more can you ask for?
