Helly will be traded before the deadline even if we are in a playoff race. The difference this year is Helly has said he isn't resigning here. Chevy will have learned from Armstrong in St.Louis that selling off at the deadline if you don't believe you can go all the way is best.
Helly said that he wanted to play for a contender. If he thinks the Jets are a contender who knows what he decides. Either way the organization won’t pull the plug on the season after 5 months of pushing the product as hard as they can to the ticket buying public.

Scheif for Swayman and Carlo and a 2nd.
Helle for Mitts and the Sabres 2nd.
Carlo has a NTC so no use throwing him in trade proposals.

Helly extending with the Jets is a no go. That ship has sailed. That has been reported numerous places. But some still cling to the mirage that he will sign here.

Buffalo gets Hellebuyck & Konecny
Philadelphia gets Savoie & Heinola
Jets get Hart and Mittelstadt

[Jets get Hart and Mittelstadt for Helly and Heinola]
[Flyers get Savoie and Heinola for Konecny and Hart]
[Sabres get Helly and Konecny for Savoie and Mittelstadt]

Tough to get one's head around 3-way trades like this. As it ruminates, I think Jets add a 2nd/3rd or B prospect to Philly. Comrie would have to go to Philly and Buffalo needs $2-3m of retention between Konecny and Helly.

C'mon Chevy, this is easy!!

I think everyone is waiting for the fallout from that Junior Team Canada scandal.

If we are anywhere near a playoff spot Chevy isn’t selling at the TDL. Fans like playoffs and the buzz around them. Many ticket buyers no nothing of prospects and draft picks. Many will just believe we will still just sign Helly and Scheifele after the season. IMO if we don’t move them before the season we are all in and Chevy is more likely to buy then sell at the TDL if we are in a playoff position no matter the contract status of players. That will be our reality.

This is Mort’s position as well. If we are in a playoff position we go down swinging. If Helle and Scheifele follow through on leaving as UFA’s after next season then all our prospects are a year older. We are most likely in a position to draft allot higher for one or two seasons which isn’t a bad thing.

If we aren’t comfortably in a playoff spot then it’s probably the St Louis Nashville fire sale. Missing the playoffs and watching the guys walk to free agency would be really bad for business.

I am not sure TNSE will want it to come to that but we’ll see.

While I do agree with you, I wonder what Helle will do if no US team is willing to pay him Vasilevskiy money long term, but the Jets are willing.

Does he go with the security of such a contract, or take less money and term but gets to be where he wants to be?

Money very often talks... I like our chances a lot better than 2 months ago of keeping him

I think if there is an equation in play. Part A is maximizing his next deal, Part B is playing for a contender.

I think the optimal time for him to sort this out is in the free Market next July 1st. Teams won’t have to worry about giving up assets for him so that deal cost goes away.

Is there a round in the playoffs that the Jets get to that would make losing Hellebuyck and Scheifele to UFA a bit easier to swallow?

Worst possible scenario for the upcoming season would be both Scheifele and Helle doing what they have done in the past seasons the Jets making the playoffs, getting bounced in the first round and both leaving as free agents with the Jets getting nothing in return.
Absolutely cant happen. No way Chevy lets this happen.

Conference finals. It will create a lot of buzz and cash for the org like 2018 and the momentum likely carries sales forward into the next season. Allowing the org to have a retool year.

A hard fought second round series loss likely also works for the org from a cost benefit and economic standpoint.

Yeah, I think a competitive showing would demonstrate that the team was good enough to take the gamble on. I think there'd be no better momentum killer sales wise than throwing in the towel at the deadline if the team is in a playoff spot.

I had a big post on this in Mort's "retool" thread, but I could live with losing Scheifele this way.

At least with Scheifele, we have some possible internal candidates to replace him. Between Perfetti, Vilardi, Namestnikov, Lowry, Lambert, Lucius, you can scrape together 4 centers for 2025. On top of that, the UFA market is actually pretty good for #2 centers next year - Henrique, Backlund, Marchessault, Lindholm, Wennberg, Duchene, Domi, Stephenson. And there's always a trade market where you use the $6M in cap you aren't paying Scheifele. If you squint hard enough, you can see a way forward at C.

Hellebuyck, though, HAS to be dealt with by the deadline. The UFA goalie market is atrocious, Brossoit is only signed for this year, and Dom D/Milic won't be ready, so you don't have a replacement in house. And if you keep everyone as own rentals, you have less trade chips for the summer.

Likeliest path, I feel: Scheifele re-signs or walks. Hellebuyck traded. Demelo and Nino re-signed. Dillon walks or is traded.

Agreed. I expect the team to be clearly in a playoff spot as currently constructed. We don't exactly play in a deep division. There are really only two teams that depending on how things go I'd rate as better then us. The rest are all either tanking or have major question marks.

I think that's always a risk with playoff teams. They often spend (picks / prospects) at the TDL, but end up with a disappointing performance in the playoffs.

The calculation is always related to how strong a contender the team is. If the Jets look like a marginal playoff contender without a clear chance to go far in the playoffs, then the Jets have to be circumspect about planning for the future. The Copp trade is perhaps a demonstration of Chevy's approach. The Jets had a "chance" to make the playoffs, but didn't look like they were going to be a contender. He kept Copp for that season to see how the Jets would pan out, but traded him when the Jets looked "meh".

For next season, on "paper" you could make the argument that the Jets are considerably stronger than last season, and they were a strong team down the stretch last season (7th in the NHL in 5v5 xGF% in the last 30 games), and were on a "heater" going into the playoffs.

Looking towards next season, if you compare what the Jets have added and subtracted from the roster (since the TDL), the Jets have had a big net gain (in xGAR and xWAR) by swapping PLD, Wheeler, Stenlund and Manalainen for Niederreiter, Vilardi, Iafallo and Namestnikov.

If you add in a healthy Ehlers and Perfetti for the full season, the Jets look quite a bit deeper and stronger than last season.

So, most teams would not be looking towards a rebuild with that quality of roster, but it will be interesting to see how Chevy balances present vs. future value.

The team looked worse then it was based on going ice cold in terms of finishing last year. I expect more normalized shooting luck this year. We probably have the deepest roster we've had since 2019.
