Maybe a better question is do we think a team with 31-32 year olds Scheifele, Namestnikov, Lowry down the middle is the best option for the team in 2024-25.... whether we make the playoffs or not...

This is the lineup I'm seeing for 2024-25 including reasonable returns for Helle and Scheif trade - not homerun level...

Connor-Vilardi-Perfetti
Ehlers-Names/(Mittelstadt)-Nino/Lambert/Chib
Iafallo/Barron-Lowry-Apples
Names/Iafallo-Kupari-Lambert/Lucius

Jomo-DeMelo
Samberg-Pionk
Chisholm/Heinola-Schmidt

You are assuming Nino re-signs I am guessing?
I'm not sold on Ehlers being here for the 24-25 season. I sure as hell hope Schmidt isn't.

I think the attitude is different towards being bad now than when the team first got here.

When the Thrashers arrived, they had been pretty bad for awhile. Not only did we have NHL hockey again and could excuse some poor results, but also we didn't have to suffer through the slow decline of a team that's not playoff worthy but couldn't sell everyone off at once. Usually there is a 2 or 3 season period where a team that goes full rebuild or larger scale retooling, where they're playing out unmoveable deals and aging players.

Now, the city has been in the playoff mix for 6 or 7 seasons. How long is it going to be before that happens again?

A clear plan doesn't sell tickets. Playing entertaining hockey sells tickets.

how do you include or reconcile the tail-end of the ATL years to the to the overall length it took for the Jets to achieve their 17-18 season?

Buff, Ladd and Wheeler came in. They were never relevant after they were swept by the Rangers. Otherwise, they were forced to trade Kovalchuk who didn't bring back much, and they had little in the pipeline. It didn't help speed things along, but I think without Buff/Wheeler/Ladd/Little this team doesn't get to 2017-18 levels of success

I guess what I'm trying to say (but evidently did a poor job in wording lol) is that

If 2011 is considered year 1, that artificially eliminates the previous few seasons where they were a bottom 10 team and along with those players you mentioned, cultivated others like Enstrom, and drafted Kane and Bogosian.

So to answer your "how long does it take" question. if it took 6-7 years of being average-to-bad play (2011/2012 to 2017/18) how do you personally include or exclude the years prior to 2011?

I was saying in my original post that they can't be excluded. The moves they made to bring in some (at the time) younger players who could contribute in the three I mentioned plus a couple of players they developed. That said I think that management group had some different goals than TNSE when they moved them here so it's not completely one fluid line but without those moves I think the Jets would not have been a 114 point team in the WCF.

Still, isn't the most the arbitrator can knock him down is 10%?
Chevy's grinding him hard...offering him 775k!
Ask for a trade in the media while you're RFA and that's what you get

What message would that send to Connor though if you trade Ehlers without at least a season of a high scoring replacement - have a hunch you need to keep Ehlers even if its until UFA to make sure you have enough scoring on the team if Scheif leaves... you still want to sign Connor to another contract

Excellent post!!

I just got to my cottage and will share thoughts when I get time. Right now I have to tow one Seadoo with another Seadoo to get it pulled out for repair. Then I have to cook dinner for two hungry 14 year old boys.

BBQ’d Ribeye, Caesar Salad, Orzo with Parmesan and Basil Is on the menu.

Sounds good. Can I come?

His qualifying offer is already 10% more then his last deal. So you have the Jets lowest offer automatically tagged at that. He probably should just sign it.

Yes, but my cooking is not worth the flight.

This one was finally better. I have been really chunking the ball into the woods on some of the dinners I have been making at the Lake lately. It helps to be sober when you are cooking I guess .

I think there's a limit where if the arbitrator awards a larger increase the team can walk away and he's a UFA? Don't think Stanley has a case for that though

I want to take a little bit different look at the near future.

It is looking like the Jets could have a pretty good season, with a little luck.
Lets assume that both Scheif and Helle stay for their last contract seasons without extending. Even though we make the PO, win a series and put up a good fight, losing the 2nd series in 7 games, neither chooses to accept Chevy's last best offer.

How bad will the 25 season be?
Other teams lose key players to UFA. It happens every year. That's why there is Free Agent Frenzy.

We will have filled 2C this season. Just for discussion, lets pretend that Vilardi stepped into that role fairly smoothly. But now we need to find another top 6C. We are again looking for an internal solution. Is it realistically there?

With Helle gone what are we going to do in net? Even if either or both of Dom and Milic are progressing very well it isn't likely that either is ready. Do we just wait for one of them? Or do we find an adequate placeholder/Helle replacement by trade or FA signing?

Unless there are some extensions in the works right now, we probably also lose Nino, Dillon, DeMelo and Brossoit. We can probably re-sign Bro, but the others probably move on.

IMO, goal is the biggest problem. The other holes should be filled by our prospect pool. If not for the 25 season, at least for the 26 season. While we have high hopes for Dom and Milic, neither is a gold plated cert to make it in the NHL. But even there, other teams cope every season.

Thought you laid out your case pretty well about why Ehlers has been a bit overrated by our fan base. Influenced my outlook on him a bit for sure.

It seems like these two guys are 6 of one, half a dozen of the other.

Age, contract length, cap hit, size, career averages, some durability issues... all pretty similar.

Not sure what there is to gain from that swap?

This reads like a total catastrophe... I don't mind losing a player to UFA but lose all of them on a delusion that this roster will win a playoff series against Vegas or Colorado?

I'm big on DD and Lambert as top players... then McGro and Barlow as Andrew Copp kind of guys - but the gaps left to be filled will mean we force guys into top 6 roles and probably hurt their development... rather than ease them in and let them seize the moment the way Perfetti has

Trade as much as you can at TD... play guys up and down the roster for the rest of the season - less pressure at the end of the season - see who shines... move on to the new core

Konecny doesn't get hurt near as much as Ehlers does. He would instantly become our number one player that plays like he gives a shit and I think we need more players like that. The time to get him was 2 summers ago. He is worth a lot more now as far as trades go.
KFC Vilardi Konecny would be a nice line.

I am hoping Bones plays Ehlers with Names this year.

Konecny gets hurt a fair bit too... I'd be hard pressed to move on from Ehlers given that he IS the guy you're talking about who always gives a shit and never complains... then we reward him by trading him for... Ehlers 2.0?

Ehlers has struggled with injuries more is how it looks to me, yeah.

Agreed, the time to get Konecny has past.

Ehlers always plays best with guys who can create space for him, grind it out in the corners, are content to play a support role, set him up and finish on his set ups. His play away from the puck is just okay. So if he doesn't have it, he needs guys on his line who can get it back. Not sure that best fit as center for him is on the roster currently.

Namestnikov played this role well for a run there. Not sure if expecting that from him for a full season is fair. But I think you're right that's probably the best guy to pair him with.
